I'm a big fan of Naoki Urasawa's works, but 20th Century Boys is one of my favorites of his. It's a series I highly, highly recommend checking out, but what's the best way to collect the series? I only have the first volume of 20th Century Boys in the Perfect edition, but it’s such a nice book, and I love how the name “20th Century Boys” and the authors name is written in clear and you can only see it when turned into the light, hold it in certain ways and you can’t see it.

Man I agree! That opaque text they layered on front is such a beautiful touch! The texturing they added to the panels on the back is awesome too. They added a lot of incredible details to the Perfect Editions and they are such nice volumes as you said!

I don't blame you for missing this, because it happens in some of the very last panels, but The Perfect Edition of 21st Century Boys DOES change something pretty critical towards the end. It caught me off guard, and I geniunely don't know which is the canon ending, so I wanted to mention it so others were aware before buying. Still a brilliant book, just completely threw me for a loop.

@PoinT BlanK I would still recommend recommend the perfect edition because it's only one (admittedly important) line of dialogue, and personally that doesn't override how well formatted this edition is. Although I still recommend reading both endings, as there is such a difference between them. Plus, as far as I know there is no "canon" ending, so you can choose the one you like more as your preferred final chapter

@@mujtabasiddiqui4196 Just the perfect editions are fine! As long as you're aware of the changes, you'll have a great time, and you can always look up the orginal last chapter online

The expanded ending just further elaborates on the twist, which was implied in the original run, which is that Fukube is the child that actually died and Katsumata was imitating him. This is made further explicit in the trilogy adaptation Urasawa was involved with.

hey.. i never brought any manga or LN before.. just wanna ask why the perfect edition books seems less. i mean if all volumes of singles stack up they looks more than perfect edition..?? so are singles contains more details as compared to perfect or both has exactly same info.. if everything is same then why perfect ed. looks less ?

Great thoughts here! Viz has done some of their best work with Urasawa's stuff, and with the Perfect Editions especially (imo). Just rounded out this series with those recently and I kiiiiinda regret not waiting for Asadora!'s inevitable releases but the singles are exquisite on their own.

Man, those singles will get you when you see them! haha I wasn't planning on double-buying them but I saw them in person at a secondhand store one day and I couldn't walk away from them. Thanks for another wonderful video, Kristen. Once again you've tempted me to buy more stories. Even before watching the video I'd have still gone with the perfect editions 😄 If only Viz and the others would follow Dark Horse and make large deluxe hardback editions for these classic stories. 4 large deluxe of 20th Century Boys would be brilliant.

Thank you so so much Coyley!!! I feel the same. Viz have done a few hardcovers here and there (Abara Deluxe Edition, Fullmetal Editions, and Junji Ito's manga come to mind), but they are aren't as large of a format as the Deluxe Editions. It would be incredible to see them come out with some hardcover, larger format releases as you mentioned! They could definitely take note on Collector's Editions from other publishers! A hardcover collection of 20th Century Boys and Monster would be a dream 😄

20th century boys is my favorite manga ever, and I plan to collect both versions (and maybe the Japanese version) eventually. I hope it gets an anime someday, it would be incredible

@@visiblehuman3705 In my opinion it's good from the start, but it really starts ramping up during the bloody new years eve "arc" (20th CB isn't really separated into arcs, but this is the end of the first section of the series)

Great video as always! There's a boxset in spanish, it has the 24 singles (from panini mexico), it's the way I collected the series, but I'm also looking forward to collecting the PEs, I'm unsure of doing it in english or in spanish (the spines look a littlle better in spains release IMO, the argentinian release also has a different spine)

I was lucky to grab up all the singles and prefer them to the perfect editions just due to the covers. The old school science fiction cover are just so pretty to me.

I did not watch this video yet, but I just finished Monster. Bought the perfect edition, it was worth it. I read Pluto maybe 4 months ago, and finished 20th century boys perfect edition, probably a year ago. Urasawa has not disappointed me yet. The man can write a thriller. Just bought Asadora, but haven’t read any yet. Thank you for having a website with manga restock dates. I’ve been searching high and low for slam dunk. I bought volume one like a year ago and I haven’t seen any other volume in stores anywhere. I almost gave up searching online and your channel came into my recommendations, I happened to watch one video and then discovered the web site. Thank you so much! I’m gonna buy the heck out of slam dunk, and if there’s a box set, I’m for sure snagging it.

I have all the single volumes of 20thCB but those color pages sure look nice. I've also go all of monster in singles and I'm working on getting the last of the perfect editions for them as well. One thing I'm surprised about is that while they did go back and retranslate monster it looks like they didn't do the same with 20thCB.

*in Joseph Joestar voice*: Ohhhhh noooo xD I have enough Manga I'm trying to collect as it is (3 series being Out-of-print, finished 1 but working on the last 2) and now you've piqued my interest with these!! I love the way the art looks on the Perfect Edtion. A cool idea I kinda had was what if the Perfect Edtions had their covers done partially in color but some of it in the grayscale/B&W as a nod to the singles? Either way, I now have to check these out and see if they interest me enough to pick up Volume 1 and go from there! *sigh* Manga as a hobby can be such a wonderful but cruel Mistress! Currently I have lile 17-20 different Manga series on my wishlist to collect from, with about 6 of those I'm actively buying for xP.

In perfect edition I have 1,2,3,4,5 and volume 12 21st century boys love the perfect edition but the single volume covers look so well detailed can’t go wrong with either.

The perfect edition is, well.. perfect and definitely the way to go when buying this manga, but one thing I dislike are the spines, which, atleast for me, play a big role when chosing which edition to get (if there are more than one). I still got the perfect editions (because the singles are so expensive and hard to find as mentioned in the video), but I display the covers on my bookshelf instead, which are fanstastic and beautifuly drawn.

The spines are one of the reasons I went back and forth between the two haha I love the red, white and black color palette of the singles, so I completely understand your dilemma there. In the end, the things that set the Perfect Editions over for me was the updated lettering and better formatting of the speech bubbles as well as the color pages, but for design I was hard-pressed to choose also! The singles look so good on the shelf, but man, yeah the covers look incredible of the Perfect Editions. If you decide to pick up the singles, I hope you are able to find them all for a good price one day!

I've never bought any manga or light novels before, and I have a question. Why do perfect edition books seem to have fewer pages compared to the single volumes? When you stack all the single volumes together, they appear to have more content than the perfect edition. Do the single volumes contain more details compared to the perfect edition, or do they both have the same content? If everything is the same, why does the perfect edition seem to have less content?

As far as I know only the last few pages of 21st century boys have changes, 20th century boys remains the same in both editions.
