I will always have A24 to thank for getting me into modern horror, I never liked horror that much in the past, but movies like hereditary really made me fall in love with horror, a lot of the movies remind me of the reflective and psychological horror movies from the late 70s and early 80s

I think "Lamb" is one of the best films of the past few years, but it's not really a horror film. I think if you watch it expecting a horror film, you'll be pretty bored. It's more of a folkloric/mythic tragic drama.
@dannygillespie66145 сағат бұрын
An incredible video! A few random comments. Trying to judge the bleakness of some of these, specifically I Saw the TV Glow, is a tricky task. For sure it's at least 5/8, but on second watch, I found it easier to see the hopeful ending that JS intended. There's plenty of reason to believe that escape happens, which is a glimmer of hope in the midst of the dark. As a non-binary person it seems to me almost impossible that anyone would miss the trans allegory, but I know some people have which is wild to me. Still, as with your review in May, I think you do a really good job expressing taste, quality, and "this won't be for everyone" ness about this movie. I do think Beau is Afraid is a horror movie. The last act, including the attic part, is certainly in line with body horror and the horror aesthetics of Roy Andersson who Aster cites frequently as a favorite (check out Songs from the Second Floor; it's brilliant). Dream Scenario...not so much. I'm not sure that ones a horror movie, but I could see it. BUT if Dream Scenario is considered a horror movie, why isn't The Zone of Interest?!? (which I would score: Bleak: 8/8, Abstract: 4/8, and I'd have to look up critic gap). But there are a lot of movies like it--say, Come and See for example--that usually aren't labeled horror when they definitely are. Also did Love Lies Bleeding not count? That surprises me. I loved that an hour into this video on A24 horror movies you still dutifully provided plot summaries of movies that everyone watching an hour long video on A24 horror will have already seen. And yay for Saint Maud finally getting its flowers! My list has The Witch and I Saw the TV Glow at the top, and then most of your top 10 in a slightly different order to fill out the top 10.

Appreciate the list and the A 24 scale for the films! As others have said "a very Dan thing to do" but l like it. I am a big fan of A 24 movies but l was surprised l hadn't previously heard of some of these films and a number l personally would not count as horror (for example l think of "The Green Room" as more of a increasingly bloody thriller - for me, true horror is best defined as otherworldly - be that the supernatural, the occult or the human subconscious - or any combination thereof). What makes A 24 horror more interesting than most is a greater emphasis on plot and character (and acting) rather than an over reliance on gore and torture and seemingly revelling in it (looking at you Terrifier and - to a slightly lesser extent - SAW franchises - movies l cannot get into and straight forwardly do not like). Largely agree with your top ten list although my top three would be different - l love Hereditary and Talk to Me and they are brilliantly acted but to me their premises and filmic style are not as unique as Saint Maud, Under the Skin and The Witch which would be my top three. Morfyyd Clarke has never been better than in Saint Maud and when she "hears" God speaking to her in a "foreign" voice God is actually speaking Welsh - Clarke being Welsh herself! Under the Skin is a sci-fi horror with very little dialogue but with brilliant editing, sound design and music - and a fantastic, underrated performance from an almost wordless Scarlett Johansson. And The Witch - well, a Puritan folk horror steeped in the belief systems of the time in which it is set - set in the natural world and a forest but feeling claustrophobic at the same time! All three films share something that is almost impossible to define - a uniqueness. Perhaps you can do a list of Neon horror films at some stage (if they've made enough of them!) - l was looking for Cuckoo on your list and then realised it was a Neon film not from A 24. For me, Longlegs was overrated (loved the central performance, didn't like Nicholas Cage - too over the top even by his standards) - the whole thing felt to me like an over extended X-Files episode. But that's a story for another day (I have a tendency to digress).

I think Dream Scenario and Talk to Me would rank near the bottom of my list. Felt like the former was made by a person who is so terminally online and has not lived in the real world for years, and the latter was clearly made by inexperienced filmmakers not so much in craft but it the way they observe human behavior through horror.

As a MaXXXine lover, for me it works perfectly because of the themes of sacrifice for stardom where Pearl gave up her dreams and struggled to be "normal" by other people's standards, X shows Maxines journey of survival and because of that she's willing in MaXXXine to sacrifice who she was to be a star which is parallel with how Pearl ends with her smiling head and raw emotion and this one with just a lifeless double that represents how removed she is from whom she was in X

I have a genuine disdain for more movies produced by A24 than films I have enjoyed at the bare minimum. I dont think this is bad per say. I'll always go and see a movie that seems interesting, and A24 films are almost always interesting and they do what a movie should always do, impact you on an emotional level.
