This was in 1998, which was the centenary celebration of the film history. That was also the year AFI made a prime-time TV special with its own countdown of the 100 great American films. This was also the start of the DVD era, and these specials were to promote sales of classic films on DVD.

This montage captures the best 2 or 3 seconds of each Best Picture winner, along with the stirring music from "Dragonheart." As others have said, it made me want to see some of the Best Picture winners I missed. The Oscar telecast did a montage for the 70th Anniversary and the 80th Anniversary. But no 90th Anniversary? I wonder why? We have to wait for 2028, the 100th Anniversary.

@FilmPassionprod

Because of #Metoo/#Timesup there barely any celebrating related to the 90th anniversary except for the opening montage. Everything with the Oscars now including what films are being nominated have to fill certain agendas and it’s ruining the art of film. No longer are these movies being won for merit!

Ten years later they showed this montage again for the 80th Academy Awards, adding 10 more films and having Jack Nicholson introduce it. The same Dragonheart music was used. No one in the audience applauded during the clip. (Btw, if you upload it, KZbin will instantly remove it. That's why you never see it here.)
@huaiwei
@huaiwei Жыл бұрын
It was interesting the audience only started a half-hearted clap with My Fair Lady in 1964, and then went full volume in 1965's the Sound of Music (They can't be that young not to appreciate earlier films? Or those two films must have been so iconic it drew a spontaneous response?). And have to clap for almost every show after that to be polite. I actually enjoyed seeing which movie received louder claps, though I realised later it is not necessarily for the better films. ;)
@charlieclemens5798
@charlieclemens5798 8 ай бұрын
Good point. I think part of the reason why the clapping became louder was because most of the audience that year where actors who emerged in the late 60s and 70s and so they are not only clapping great movies but also supporting their friends who some of them where probably in the audience that year eg Nicholson, hoffman, Streep etc
