M52TU 2.8 owner here. Motor feels fantastic now at 25 years of age. And feels very reliable, cooling system fully replaced.

Good grief this video was a wonderful watch! I'm an M57D30 owner here; got a 02' 330d Touring. Its an absolutely brilliant engine and although it doesn't have much of a personality compared to the M52/M54, its utterly incredible. Great power and easy 50+MPG on my long journies; I love it!

11:36 thats m50b25 in e36, not m52. Also i think you forgot to mention increased oil consumption in m54 compared to m52 due to piston rings, but still this video is really good and provides a lot of info.

iron block M57 here. >incredible fuel economy >since it's a manual it never had swirl flaps >egr deleted >no power upgrades (yet?) >455000 km and still running like a charm it really is the pinnacle of e46 engines if you can live without the glorious sound of its petrol siblings

Realy nice video man! 😁 I really like the style of this. The 3 dials, retro gaming style (i really liked the use of TF2/Half Life music, its fits really well!), and the informations about engines are great. Be sure to continue with this style. It would be cool to see engines in other Bmws maybe.. idk e36 (even though e36 is very similar to e46), or maybe some Mercedeses (idk.. w124 maybe) but whatever. With this style you can you video about anything, and it would entertaining anyways :DD Keep it up! Its gooooood.

Id like to say, for anyone lookng to buy an e46, go for the 328i version. Simply because the M52TUB28 has better oil control rings around the pistons. The M52 uses much less oil than the M54 does. And while you wont get the power of the M54B30 engine, you can still just swap the headers for catless ones, get the ZHP camshafts and get a proper tune, and you should see power increase from the 192 HP to somewhere around 240.

Great video. A bit of inaccuracies here and there, like how the M52TU would be somewhere in the middle between M52 and M54, but those are things that only people really into these engines would know. M52 it's actually much closer to M54 than to M52. To be honest, BMW should have called the M52TU - > M54 and the M54 -> M54TU; it would have been much closer to reality. Blocks and heads are absolutely the same on the M52TU and M54, headers and intake designs are identical (the intake is just larger or smaller), ECUs are very similar, sensors are the same or similar etc. etc. Essentially, you can convert easily an M52TU to be an M54 or viceversa, but you cannot convert an M52 easily to an M52TU. Some stuff is outright impossible.

I tried to focus more on the mass production engines fitted to the E46 lineup, and as BMW only made 10 road going examples, I don’t think that many people have ownership of one of these beauties. I will for sure cover these homologated engines in a later video though!

n42 is not an interference engine. U cannot bend valves with stock cams trough timing failure

That’s on me, from my research, there’s been reports on forums of bent valves in the N4X engines, and I inferred that the engines must be of the interference type due to this. I’ll update the description to account for this. Thanks for the heads up!
