If anyone's still having trouble with this, I don't blame you, this shit's pretty difficult. However, one trick I've really found that helps is to relax my fingers. Instead of tensing, where I get the dreaded "pinky pop", I started just making the shape in the air, and then slowly pressing on the strings until I get notes, making sure to keep my fingers arched. That way, I've found it much easier to play. Then I just practice relaxing but still moving fast enough to hit the shapes. Hope this helps someone.

This is another great lesson - thanks Carl! When I first tried it I almost gave up because it looked too difficult. But if I put a capo on the second fret the F#add9 can be played very easily, with just two fingers. This has the added advantage of lowering the action on the guitar to make the other stretch chords easier to play, and giving your hand a periodic break from the stretching. Since the F major shape that Carl uses can't be played if a capo is on the second fret, I play the F and the G using the "A shape" higher up the fretboard.
@lawrencedevere22422 жыл бұрын
you can do a normal A shape miss out the G then this maybe awkward but I do middle finger E on 2nd fret, pinky finger on A string on 4th fret then with the index finger play G string on 1st then 2nd to sharpen it then back down for the rest of that arpeggio shape then play the the D chord with the E string open then a power chord D string second fret G string 4th fret then fret the E string on 2nd fret the Open E then open B works for me when a capo isnt about and you get less straining stretches in.
@robwilliford28983 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite songs. Thanks for posting. The stretching too hard for me .. especially the F# w/ index finger barred on 2nd fret (3:45) so I'm learning using single notes w/o the bars. It takes some doing, but the medium tempo makes it possible. Also helps to build fret movement speed.

Some alternative fingering is possible - for example, you can play the A Chord at the second fret like a regular A but with your ring finger on the 4th fret on the G string, starting the arpeggio from the A string - it gives you the same notes. Also, for the D and E you can play the high note on the B string instead of having to move your pinky and getting rheumatoid arthritis. I haven't found another solution for the F#madd9, though - bugger of a stretch!

This is the most painful song I've ever tried to play- do not ever, ever obligate yourself to playing this song. This is one of those songs we play only when everyone in the band is feeling at their best, and before we do anything else- so your forearm isn't already half worn out. The burn is real ppl- and it hits me before I even get to the first chorus- by the time the song is over my left forearm is cramping and burning like wildfire. I am 52 though- and I have arthritis pretty badly- maybe it's not so tough for everyone else, Idk. Besides- we have a female singer- she has trouble with covering Police songs. Sting can sing like a mf'er- almost as well as he writes. The thing is- it doesn't sound that difficult- he's not showing out in the traditional sense- but try singing one of his songs. He has amazing color in his tone- unbelievable inflection- and a real sincerity that you just can't capture or mimic. He uses his voice like a literal instrument playing a counter melody to whatever the band is doing. And this is very intentional- he's creating harmonies that really color the song and place you inside the space he's creating within. He's an artist and a musical genius- in the true sense of the word. He could've been a classical composure if he wanted to, imo- and I think would've been a really good one.

Yep, it's in A-flat. I always thought Andy played it that way 'cause it works great for the chorus/break part - the chords for that are then EMaj and F#Maj which fall into place nicely with A-flat. Not to mention the fact that if you're playing along with the original recording and don't want to detune you'll need to play it in A-flat!
