Nice to see the fossils so well in the blue limestone. I have also blue Belgian stone window sills but there are almost no fossils in those. It depends from what layer in the quarry it came I guess.

@DeHoeveOldBelgianFarm Hiya guys re repair to broken sill. Next time think baking !!!!! Buy disposable plastic piping bags, put your repair mix into the bag, make a very small cut so you can slowly pipe the liquid into the crack or repair that has to be made. Alternatively use a zip lock bag and snip off a corner then pipe away until your hearts content. Cheers from OZ!

The stone is so beautiful and it is fun to see you experiment with all sorts of ways to preserve the original construction work. Using a form of kintsugi is a wonderful way of honoring the ancient stone. I look forward to seeing the result.

Thank you! I love the concept of kintsugi; highlighting a repair with gold doesn't celebrate that an object is flawed, but that it is worth being saved. We're all worth being saved. Thank you for sharing the process with us.

Back in my student days I worked refinishing classic yachts - real gold leaf was used quite a bit by the marine sign painting artists - to add the yachts name to the transom, and for other decorative flourishes on the hull. Their work stands up to all the ocean can throw at it, so the products they use should work well on your house. A boat yard that specialises in high-end yacht refinishing might be able to help you find a good source closer to your area (one of the other commenters kindly supplied a link from New Zealand).

Nice idea. A bit old fashjoned, but a Sign Writing supplies company should be a source for gold leaf. You can paint the area around the cracks with egg white, to prevent the gold from sticking where you don't want it. Then, you can use an oil based paint on the cracks to apply the gold (once tacky), so it will stick. Or experiment with the lime mortar, of course.

If you don't succeed in zkitsugi repair you could try to grind some Belgium blue stone, make a sort of powder. Mix that with a waterproof weather resistant sealant. Than you can fill the cracks with blueish material. Good luck. In the Netherlands the outside "vensterbanken" are not level but a bit slope so that all the rain drips off and doesn"t remain and damages the blue stone. Good luck. They're beautiful

Old spatulas are much easier to use for crack filler and you can push down with them and clean easier. Even use new ones as they are cheap. Also , fold a ridge in duck tape as to make a little dam to prevent side runoff.

Ilyia the kintsugi method is a wonderful idea. Here in the US we have turkey basters, A plastic tube with a suction bulb on one end, this may be an easier way to dispense the white mortar into the crack. If you have any more to do.

Ask a picture-frame restaurator to do it or give you a small amount of the proper gold. Better to ask him to do it. There is more to it than just applying. And you dont need much. That leafgold comes in packets of 50 or 100 you need only one. Most pictureframe companies have one person who can do it. Also lot of old woodworkers can do that. Ask a restoration- shop for meubles.

Maybe an alliphatic resin will help you. It is mostly uv-stable an you can mix goldflitters or goldpigmentpowder in the last, transparent layer. Then grind it and put a last transparent seal. Pure gold is to soft and i do not know how long it will last outside. That is how i should try it. I am working with resins as flooring systems and copied for instance the stars on walk of fame in los angeles. There are golden elements in it. I did this in cooperation with a professional painter. They know about colour and powders, it is 30 or more years ago and i think it was gold we put in the resin, these really thin layers that they use for restauration.

Wanted to suggest similar approach if lime mortar won't work - just use some kind of weatherpoof epoxy mixed with gold and maybe some base color (black or white should look nice with this stone)

Might shrink a little when it dries, but I think it's a good idea. If shrinkage occurs add more of your filler. I think some sort of sealer to penetrate and protect the repair after it dries would be good.
