Those imperfections are just the nature of the wood. Embrace them.

I don't think people will even notice the imperfections on the beams. In fact, I think even the imperfections are beautiful!

I was shocked - a RED ceiling??? You tricked me completely. I love the idea of natural wood with black beams. It's going to look fantastic!

Ufff... I was very relieved that you chose the natural color (you got me for a moment ). Have you heard about the OSMO oils from the UK? Billy Petherick uses it for his restoration projects and raves about it all the time... Another option would be to add a few drops of whitewash paint to the oil to keep it very light...

When I recall those days removing whole buildings with bricks being cleaned and stacked tidily and heaving ancient hay out of the building endlessly etc etc I think choosing between red and blue paint must feel like something of a minor detail. You perfectionists though, every detail is important isn’t it🥰

Remember, the beams will be above your head and you will not see small imperfections! Nature does not make anything “perfect”, it’s boring! Hugs to you both.

Illya - check out the Festool ETS EC 150/5 sander. It is expensive but is 10 times faster than the makita you are using. You are going to be a lot of sanding over the next few years and I can guarantee you it will be worth every cent to you.

I love the beautiful natural look of wood. Scared me with the red and blue colors but I should have known you were just joking. Making progress but still a lot of work to go. Hope you meet your move in goal. Wishing you a very happy week.

Remember that the wood will darken as it ages and when exposed to light. With pine for example to keep it looking “new” a very light coat of white stain will do that and keep it from yellowing. Any natural non pigmented finishes will naturally darken so keep that in mind as you select your finish.

The blue and red was funny😂. I think the oil will look nice, and you won’t be able to discern too much difference from down on the floor when you look up at all of them treated the same. I think the color you choose will depend on the colors of your furnishings, etc. Likewise, you won’t discern any of the little imperfections in the wood, which gives the wood character, anyway. You’ll be too far away to see those. Hopefully, the chimney will be finished soon.

Trust your instincts ! Perfection is a standard few master. Let the wood speak, knots, swirls, saw marks. These elements are not unattractive as such, because your preparation work is great !

I don't know who picked the music for when the video is sped up but If I have to listen to that I will unsubscribe. The music is terrible. Sounds like grunge rock. I love to watch you work even if it takes a long time for us. Paint the wood anything you want. It is your house. I hope I can keep on watching.

You want a ceiling to be as light as possible, in part to diffuse light, but also to not be oppressive. A white transparent stain that actually brightens the wood without hiding it’s grainy character would be the best choice.

Oak will darken with age anyway so just a natural finish. I Use a boiled linseed oil/beeswax and turps mixture for most of the 'natural' pieces I make but as someone else said anyone that can spot imperfections in a ceiling with all the shadows is a better man than I ! It will look stunning. In my experience, the planer snipe is usually when you stop and start the timber. Do you have a spiral insert cutter head, if not then get one as they deal with wavy grain better. In my old thicknesser it had straight knives and on Jarrah it was always giving problems for finishing but the new one with a spiral head doesn't.

So glad you are going for the oil 😁 I honestly doubt anyone else will ever look at the results and notice any little imperfections, and if you point them out they will look at you like you’re insane. Perfection is the enemy of good (or progress depending on which version you like best) and as a perfectionist I frequently have to tell myself that and I speak of people looking at you like you’re insane when you point out mistakes from personal experience 🤪

I vote for a natural finish but say you should use Osmo or Danish oil that will give more protection. Linseed oil turns everything yellow and it's not always nice looking. The stripes on your timber mean that the blades on the planer need to be sharpened, so just make sure to do that before you do your next batch and you'll avoid that problem.

Did you try Osmo oil for wood? A you tube that I follow is using it on a chateau and old convent restorations! It is beautiful on word and they have an oil for sealing granite stones etc also!!! Channel is “The Pethericks”

I think that the Natural Oil would show light spots even if you sanded forever. If the wood has light spots, the oil will show them. So you are right to stop sanding.
