I worked at a ford dealer for 14 years, we had a ford system that was called fixed right first time. This gave us feed beck on our repairs as an individual tech. worked great for the most part. What it caught was the techs that did not follow the manufacturer specks to do the repair. They were lazy and would not take the time to read what was supposed to be done. (trying to short cut things)This bite in the butt more than once as they would get a comeback and loose pay. Skipping a simple thing like a small amount of sealant in critical areas is just plain lazy. The valve adjustment if you think about it is absolutely necessary after the heads are shaved . Anybody that did that would not work at my shop because i take pride in fixing it right the first time.

I just got this one in my feed thismorning. after almost 18 months of watching mechanics and eleconics videos because of a blown fusable link in a jeep, i could write an entire trope list of all the things you shop guys have to put up with, all of which would be new ones (a trope is a cliche). I appreciate all the things I discover on here, having gone through too many vehicles that have been hit with "not my monkies" like the correction you had to do here. a lot of which weren't just that, but the "red solo cup" mentality.

I've learned over the years when i have a problem car come in, my first question is who worked on it last and what was done to it. Had a customer with a volvo come in for a timing belt service. I lined everything up to replace it and found out the cam was off 1 tooth--HUH? rolled it again and found the same issue. I replaced the belt and took it for a drive--ran great. Customer picked it up and came back about 10 minutes later and asked what we did. I told him. He said it never ran so good the entire time he had owned the car.

I wonder if the reason the first belt failed so soon was because the first guy put that shim on backwards. Then the second guy didn't understand its function, so he didn't recognize it was on wrong. So, he repeated what the first guy did. Even in the dealer repair manual they don't explain what that shim does, although they clearly state which way it goes on. Once you know what it is designed to do, it's easy to remember which way it goes. This was an excellent video, I didn't realize that the rocker assembly is not encompassed by the rocker covers. I guess they did that to place the VVT solenoid assembly on the outside, hence the need for sealer. Did Honda ever stop using manually adjustable valve lash?

My tight valve story pertains to a no start on a fresh build race car engine. A liscensed mechanic turned shop teacher , a mechanic that apprenticed under me , a few other me hanics , car driver and the engine builder couldn’t get the car to start. I was crew chief on this car but quit because of these guys hanging out there drinking beer while I and the driver would do the weekly repairs to get ready for Friday night at the local track. Finally after days of begging me to look at it I took the Friday afternoon off to go see if I could figure it out. After a minute of cranking , off with the valve covers , backed off valves and started the race car. Turned out the “ anti pump up cheater lifters pumped up. I was amazed all the mechanics and engine builder couldn’t hear the issue out the pipes. This was extreme not to start but still easy to figure out. Remember , pop through carb , or intake is intake valve , pop out tail pipe is exhaust valve. Also , loose valves , to a degree is more horse power .
@TRAXRIPPER Жыл бұрын
This information is so insightful and at the same time completely useless without the learned earned experience on how to apply it! So if I may ask a question to help me with my own understanding on how it applies please.... I get exactly what you mean with the intake or exhaust pop that you reference but if you could explain the loose valve to horsepower to a degree part.... And in my exact case I'm asking because I have a 94 Ford Mustang 3.8 V6 Manual that I got extremely cheap for under a grand due to the kid that had it could not getting running right. They got to the point where they let it sit parked under the car port for 2 years untouched until they finally came off it. They loaded it on a trailer and delivered it to me with a box of parts and some in the trunk. From all the info I was given they had an issue with a fouled plug and misfire and went through plugs and coils and wires and then pulled the valve covers to look for a broken spring. Found nothing put covers on and there it sat. Now it's clear to me they messed with the rockers. Where I am now is I have the car running and checked all the push rods and springs and valve action by hand with a bar on the crank before I ever started it. I adjusted all the rockers and valves back into spec as best I could to keep from taking more apart then needed unless I had to. What I have is the miss is on cylinder 3 and the compression is so low that plug is not even burning they all look fine except that one is just black soot. I ask because what I found in the valve adjustment for the 3.8 V6 is the rockers are non adjustable according to what I found if that is correct? It says to start at #1 TDC compression stroke and tighten all to 26 ft lbs and gives no call out on any order after and there is no lash adjustment or anything. Is that correct? Because it seems on cylinder 3 that from the time the intake valve opens the exhaust valve seems to open before the compression has time to build. So I'm asking because I'm wondering even though they say non adjustable is it still possible that the exhaust valve is too tight and causes it to open to soon? Can I or should I try to back that bolt off some? They don't have a jam nut setting just a built in pedalstool on the head with a bolt and square washer through the rocker that holds it on. So is there any degree of play I can work with to try to find time this or am I gonna wind up pulling the head to look for the issue? What must be done will be done and trust me I know..... There is nothing worse then someone asking hey what's wrong with my car? I have this and it's doing that, can you fix it and how much! Lol The amount of variables that could be wrong with the car is a list as long as the list of all the things they leave out when they say ... All we tried is this and it didn't work or it was fine and one day just died for no reason! LMAO Sooooo.... In order for you to know anything about my car would require you to be here on my car but if you can give me any insight to the valve rocker adjustment or non adjustable for the 94 Ford Mustang 3.8 V6 so I know if what I am telling you is correct or is the information I have wrong and point me where I would find the correct procedure to try before I call it on pulling the head. So on the passenger side I have 1 2 and 3 with 3 at fire wall and 4 5 6 on driver's side 6 at fire wall. If I have that wrong let me know and it is 3 the only cylinder that is my issue So pass side at fire wall No matter what number at least that issue does not change! Lol Thanks for any insight you might share and shared already if you ever get this message!

I worked at a toyota dealership in the early 80s, did`not see it but heard of a tech that would carefully disassemble whatever he was working on without cleaning any more than was absolutely necessary and carefully reassemble so that it actually looked untouched but the repair was done correctly. He supposedly said he wasn`t paid to clean the area he worked on. possible myth? maybe.

This is the exact reason I do all my own work... although it would be nice to have a shop I trust that would do jobs as meticulous as I would because I'm getting older and I have more money than time at this point... I just finished a nightmare power steering pump and lines on my jaguar that I would have much rather paid someone to do... Last time I tried a shop was an alternator on the same jaguar (hard to reach) the minute the job needed an actual mechanic and was no longer a part swap the guy called me complaining saying the removal was giving him problems and he would need more money to continue .. I went and got the car (paid him for the work or lack of work he did) and had the alternator out In 20 minutes laying on my back in the driveway......never again..people are so lazy, it's almost impossible to find someone that takes pride in their work...

The guy that did that job was probably a high school flunky coming from his last job at Burger King. But seriously, nobody is interested in the automotive repair industry these days, been that way when I finally left it 30 years ago. The industry has to pay up to attract talented people but manufacturers cheap out on warranty pay and the customer always on the cheap, so there isn’t the money to support high salaries. End result is most of the guys that are left in the field really don’t give a crap. I do 95% of my own maintenance as I’m lucky to have my ticket and experience but for that 5% that I cant do because I don’t have access to certain. specialized equipment, I really dread taking that vehicle in to a shop. Yeah, the specs he had were in hundredths of a millimeter. If he adjusted the valve to that thinking they were thousandths of an inch, the valves are way too loose. Here's what I found on-line: Intake: 0.20-0.24 mm (0.008-0.009 in.) Exhaust: 0.28-0.32 mm (0.011-0.013 in.).
