High Elf is great for melee characters because you can trade out your cantrip to pick up Blade Ward. It's sort of like having a mini-shield spell. Better if you can cast it ahead of combat, but also works well with those with good bonus actions.

Oh yeah blade ward is awesome on melee that don't need to use their concentration on anything else!
