Yup. He was actually a top scorer on his college team. When he got to the NBA, he realized he wouldn't have a long career as a scorer against NBA talent, so he decided to overspecialize on rebounding and barely even practiced his shot anymore. Turned out to be the right decision. (Source is his book. I'm paraphrasing from memory of course)

That's what I'll always remember. It was just hilarious. And every time he made it, people went wild. It's kind of funny because over his career he averaged a three pointer almost every other game and shot 23% for his career. I don't think people realize how often he shot them and he'd make one for every four or five he shot. That's not bad for a guy who is notorious for not being able to shoot the ball.

I love that he doesn't do the "too cool for school" routine when he succeeds and is applauded (not just for shots but rebound moments etc), but instead openly shows how he genuinely enjoys the game and is proud for being an important asset to the team. Also, love Kukoc's reactions from the bench in the 1998 footage.

@@morpher728 "wasn't he a good scorer in college tho?" Great, great college player though Houston needed a center and took Akeem who was the best college center of his generation. Houston can never be faulted for their choice. Portland had the #2 pick also needing a center and took Sam Bowie. I will always thank Portland for passing on MJ. "Also why was his 3pt percentage so low if he looks capable of them" The numbers don't lie. His 3 point shooting was just ok though everyone remembers the Portland playoff game. He focused his time on improving his mid-range shooting and turn around jump shots. No one has ever been better. Keep in mind that the Bull's had John Paxson and then Steve Kerr to shoot threes when players sagged on MJ. Kerr is still the NBA's #1 all-time 3 point percentage leader.

I knew someone who was involved with the Bulls organization back in the 90s and he told me Dennis used to shoot a lot of 3s in practice and that he could go on some insane streaks, like double digit streaks. He wasn't a terrible shooter, he just didn't shoot a lot because his main focus was defense and rebounding and obviously if you're out there shooting behind the 3 pt line, you aren't in position for an offensive rebound. That's why he often shot them when the Bulls were up big to give the crowd a thrill. Dude was a special player.

@@marioguti9887 Facts. In addition, many people don't remember Dennis averaged 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game during his college career. He could score, but he knew his role in the NBA was to defend, rebound, and be an energy player. I saw Dennis play live at the United Center many times as a Bull during the regular season and playoffs (including Finals). I'd always laugh whenever he'd be aw-shucks after making a basket. They weren't luck! Finally, my father always pointed out his layups and how Dennis would make them more complicated than they needed, but he'd still make them.

Dennis can score when he really wants to! As a Piston, he scored more but changed his position for defense, rebounds and assists. He was also a great passer.

I like that because Rodman is the primary Rebounder it’s him who takes the rebound and goes behind the arc and hit the 3. It’s not like somebody else is getting the offensive rebound and throwing it back to Rodman who is waiting behind the three-point line which we usually see these days.

I miss Dennis' playing days. rarely do you get a person so wildly entertaining. not only was he phenomenal at what he did on the court but he put on a show for the fans. some stars today think the world revolves around them. sure makes it hard to enjoy. I think the league will be 10x better when a certain someone hangs them up.

People, especially the younger crowd, need to understand that Dennis used to be hated in Chicago, he was part of the Bad Boys Pistons that gave us nightmares in the late 80s and for 3 years straight denied the Bulls a trip to the Finals. That he became such a beloved sports figure later in Chicago tells you what a hard worker and charismatic person he is.

Just like LeBron when he went to Miami. Cavs hated him. Lot of people actually. Not just cavs fans. Then he was loved again when he back to Cavs.
@marioguti9887
@marioguti9887 2 жыл бұрын
@@mr8883 I see your point but there's a difference, LeBron was hated in Cleveland because he was their hometown kid when he was drafted #1 overall, well he's not from Cleveland, he's from Ohio but you get what I mean. He was seen as ditching his hometown fans and team when he couldn't deliver a championship when he promised them he would...yeah I know he has become a loved sports figure in Cleveland when he returned and they later won a championship. Funny thing is that LeBron was never a Cavs fan growing up, he loved the Bulls and especially Micheal Jordan who made life miserable for Cavs fans in the 80s and 90s, lol.

@@marioguti9887 Yeah LeBron just did what he finally wanted, he get to something for himself. Not for the fans. Not for the pay check. Not for anyone else. He chose Miami cos is his life. He realized he doesn't owe anyone anything, not even a promise he made. Lot of fans don't see that. But at the end, he did go back to Cavs & won it for them, so all those pricks that boo'd him in Miami over the years, should've all apologize. LOL And I think that's what Rodman did too. He only did what he wanted. Fk beef with Bulls. I wana win. I wana play with good pay. So he went

Those are all pure. I know that if we show every missed three we'd be here for days, but knowing about Dennis' work ethic, I bet he could play in today's game as a stretch four, make 1-2 threes per game and still lead the league in rebounds and defense. Honestly, his rebounding was more about chasing the ball than body checking opponents, and his later years after the Pistons he was not so handsy as a defender, more of a slide his feet and cut you off type.
