In response to some comments, I intentionally limited this to just Disneyland. I also limited it to only those attractions that are still in operation today. But if I had included the people mover, you can bet it would have gone down as the worst re-skin ever. One attraction that was a true miss though was Country Bear Jamboree for Winnie the Pooh. It's in the mid range for me, but in the end I would put that as a POSITIVE re-skin. Winnie the Pooh > Country Bear Jamboree.

LOVED this video David, great work! Another re-skin I'd have loved to see a comparison on would have been Tom Sawyer's Island vs Pirate's Lair, especially if you consider TSI from it's later years when , often due to liability concerns, they had to subtract from the experience. But the effort you put forward on this clearly shows, loved seeing the old footage (I spied Ian in the Buzz Lightyear section! Hope that dude is well, miss seeing him on screen)

I love this video! It was fun seeing all of the old rides again! However, I laughed pretty hard at the end. You spent the entire video saying that injecting IP’s into old rides is not your favorite but, at the end, you have faith that injecting an IP into an old ride will be great. I think reskinning IPs can work. Nemo’s submarine was a good one in my opinion. Winnie the Pooh is fun for small kids. Kids want to come and see their favorite characters in rides. There defiantly needs to be a balance though. I think the tree house will be great, and Tianas new ride will be a better story to tell. Disneyland just needs more balance of IP rides and Originals.

While you did miss all of the re-skinned/themed attractions at DCA, there are a few you missed at Disneyland. The most important being Winnie the Pooh and Country Bear Jamboree. You could also count Videopolis and the new Fantasyland Theatre as a re-skin. Another is the Disneyland Railroad - it did not open with the Grand Canyon diorama, nor the Primeval World diorama. Also, what about the People Mover becoming Rocket Rods? Fantasyland Autopia, Tomorrowland Autopia reskinned to one Autopia. Tahitian Terrace reincarnations. Finally, the Motorboat Cruise area re-skins.

In terms of Star Tours, it was interesting with how it replaced Adventure Thru Inner Space. However, it's also notable how it transitioned from the original ride (where you're with Captain RX-24 going to Endor every time) to the randomized flight sequence today. I got to ride the OG Star Tours plenty of times from 2005-2010, and I have to give it credit for being one of the things that introduced me to Star Wars altogether. The randomized flight sequence on The Adventures Continue is great, with them even adding newer segments from the newer movies, but the charm of the original ride is still felt by many fans. Captain RX-24 is now even in Oga's Cantina as a DJ in Galaxy's Edge. I also wanted to make this in tribute to the late great Paul Reubens.

Yeah, it's Snow White either way on one hand, but on another hand you get rid of things like the haunted forest and swamp with the crocodiles, and the optical illusion of the witch's hand that seemed to reach out to offer the poisoned apple. . . there were other changes, too. Today you have instead more of the story as shown in the original Disney animated film. It's very different to me, but maybe it's all Snow White to you?

Cool video, David. I remember all of these... I loved Through Inner Space. As for Tiana's... for me it won't be better than Splash Mountain. I already miss hearing "howdayadoo..." in Critter Country. That ride is embedded in my Disney soul. I believe it will be done very well, it has to be since they've taken out a fan favorite but for me it won't be better... To much nostalgia. The single best thing Disney could do would be to bring back The People Mover. There's been a dip in creativity around the park and while bringing back The People Mover doesn't sound like a creative move, it certainly could be with updated technology. Keep up the great work!

There were 3 autopias and now only one. The miniature autopia (closed in 1966) was a delight to me. I was the youngest child in our family and often didn't make the height requirement on rides that my siblings loved. Minature autopia was just the opposite. They didn't get to ride it. It was just me and my dad, and I got to drive the car. Having just one autopia means the ride is longer, and the line moves faster. But having a ride in Tomorrow Land just for little kids was nice.

One of your best videos to date, David! I enjoyed every second of this one!!! Agreed on Thunder Mountain and Tony Baxter. My comment is about Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. My family was thrilled when they announced Princess and the Frog as the reskin as it’s one of our favorite Disney films. But that all faded when the storyline was announced as a sequel story, which means beloved characters like Ray and Faucilier are dead, that the songs will not be the ones from the film, that it’s now a tour through a salt mine and you get to see where she now makes “hot sauce” from her new co-op food organization and then get to buy it when you exit. An absolute magic killer for what could have been a beautiful and magical experience with the source material. As my oldest daughter said, she wants Princess Tiana, not CEO Tiana. I think this is going to be a misfire. And it should have been at the top of the list of BEST reskins. I don’t think it has a chance with this too-real-world storyline. I hope I’m wrong but with those 'modern' style art pieces going up outside the barn entrance in WDW, which is said to be Tiana's new office... I'm losing hope.

Although not a true re-skinned attraction at Disneyland, I'd say the Matterhorn addition of the Yeti scenes, tunnels and ice caves in 1978 was an incredible upgrade into believable immersion and storytelling. Plus, even riding the sky ride through the apex of those ice caverns was a real thrill.✨

The subs rly excited me when they finally reopened (my other former “most fave” as a kid) so I made friends & fam wait forever in line, & what a letdown. No one was pleased with me… ah well. Vehemently hated Tarzan treehouse, can’t wait for the new version, it looks super. I don’t recall the train before BTM, but I do remember teepees & folks dressed as “Indians” way back in the day. Um so, yes, updates to all that were all to the good. They could even do quite a bit better imho. LOVE BTM tho, even the newer flashy hill is ok, whatever. So, I’m very happy for the Bayou Adventure, very much looking forward & I have high hopes!

Being someone who’s first trip to Disneyland was in 1959 at age 2, and was a CM in 1977 for a couple of years, then getting the annual pass the very first year they had it in the mid-1980’s (at $100!) I can honestly say I have seen most every change at Disneyland except the first 4 years. Overall I agree with David, especially about Tomorrowland. One not his list was the short lived Rocket Rods that replaced the Peoplemover and who’s queue went through the former CircleVison theater (the screens were still there, showing 1950’s DIsney animated space cartoons). And it is why as you go to the left of the old Peoplemover ramp to Galaxy Grill is slopes up. That is because the Rocketrod queue went underneath in a tunnel, then up a ramp (or stairs) to get to the load area. So Rocketrods has the distinction of replacing two beloved Walt-era attractions - The Peoplemover and CircleVsion (aka Circlerama)! And I loved the original Mine Train Through Natures Wonderland! I was a CM the year it closed. Very sad at the time, but they did a bang-up job with Big Thunder. I just wish they would have routed it by the river as the Mine Train did.

10:00 Yeah, the subs are costly. Tony Baxter has pointed out why it is worth it. You can't have that experience anywhere else. You can only have so many dark rides and roller coasters. Many of the experiences that you can have in the park are too similar to others in the park. Finding Nemo is wildly different from any other attraction in Disneyland or any attraction you have ever been on. Personally, I've never been on a real submarine. Yet, my son and I can claim that we once took a private submarine ride.

Nemo's Submarine Voyage is an apt reskin that saved a doomed attraction that might as well be on the California Historical Society's front page. It's cute and relevant and attracts younger guests to the ride where the original wasn't appealing at all to those under the age of 40 (with me being the exception apparently). But David is right, the original was a classic that used way more practical effects and had a quaint charm that I really miss from growing up in the 80s and 90s. I saw the Submarine Voyage off on it's final voyages Labor Day weekend in 1998 with a total of 12 times having ridden it that day and having to stop only because of a thunder storm warning. RIP.

Better is highly subjective. Finding Nemo's submarines are constantly packed, it draws children and adults as horrific as it is. That's one type of measure of better. Splash Mountain was near and dear to me, I grew up watching commercials during my Saturday morning cartoons and then my parents took me to Disneyland and we all rode it together. The only reason I had returned all these years after was to ride and remember that specific time in my life. Getting a pennant, some Mickey Mouse ears with my name on it done right in front of me, and some memories of Soarin' over California. That was my Disneyland. With the exception of Soarin' during Food and Wine, all of my Disneyland no longer exists. Pair that with large crowds, high prices, and the destruction of Splash. My version of better was erased, even if the popular consensus is that Tiana's knocked it out of the park. Which, I mean, come on....look at what's happening to the parks. Do you think the kind of love that went into Big Thunder exists now? Sadly, better Disney will exist in my memories as I struggle to find a compelling reason to go back after my Magic Key expires. I do feel fortunate to have been able to ride Splash a few final times. I only hope that children making memories now, are able to look back on that love I experienced decades forward in time.

They sent back the typical "We don't take outside ideas, but keep it up and you could be an imagineer" letter w/ the latest Disney Adventures issue. TWO YEARS LATER, REDD ROCKETT'S PIZZA PORT OPENED! As stated in this video, I clearly wasn't the only one asking, but I had to double take on that first visit to New Tomorrowland.

I loved CircleVision and Adventures Through Inner Space. I agree tho that buzz was a positive re-skin. But for me personally, as a child the wonderment of shrinking and traveling thru “inner space” was amazing. I know people love Star Tours but for me, watching a 3D movie while getting shook until nauseous just didn’t compare.

I would love a DCA version of this video!! I know there’s less to work with there, but I’d find it interesting nonetheless haha

Aloha Dave..well as a kid I loved the Fantasyland Theater..it had stories about Pecos Bill and Tom Henry which were great stories that I loved as a kid...but I also love the re-build of Fantasyland that was done so..a wash....Skipping over to Mine Train..another ride I loved as a kid and Big Thunder is a favorite of mine now..I just wish they would have let Tony build the Western River Expedition that they had talked about since the Pirates of the Carribean..It was one of Walt's Ideas...Tomorrowland....well..Retro the whole thing back to 1967 and call it done... Thanks again Dave..

A "reskin" is when the ride mechanics remains the same, but only the theming is changed. So, Splash Mtn is undergoing a retheme. But Star Tours is NOT a reskin of Adventures though Innerspace. It's an entirely new ride. Same for Big Thunder Mtn RR.

This was very interesting - thanks for your efforts!

I still think you should have the peoplemover on this list. It is because of the reskin as to why it is not in operation today.

Technically after Circle Vision it was the rocket rods pre-show queue as you were in line. Some of us may forget that ride though LOL

Wait you missed the 2000 Leagues Under the Sea reskin or the whole Tomorrowland Steampunk reskin.

How about the original castle being based on IP advertisement for the upcoming sleeping beauty film- the constant complaint of IPs is so tiresome

There’s a lot more that wasn’t included like Rocket Rods, Second level rocket jets, Matterhorn (addition of snow man), Train (after Galaxy’s Edge), Lincoln (sound effects), River with revised scenes, Haunted Mansion (NBC for 4 months of a year), Pirates PC revisions.

Great video but you were incorrect about what replaced Circlevision. It closed in 1997 and became the pre show in the Rocket Rods queue in 1998. After Rocket Rods was deemed it was never coming back the building became Astroblasters.

5:11 To be fair, Disney moved the "Carousel of Progress" to Florida in 1973 at the insistence of the sponsor, GE (General Electric) who wanted their products to sell in more markets than just California.

Disney needs to listen to the people, bring back the “people mover”do the needed maintenance and maintain the rides that were originally envisioned by Walt. the park goers will always be grateful.

Ok, but with star tours, i miss one detail that i found hilarious, the energizer advertisement as you exited the ride. The energizer bunny walking through the star wars planets was great and i kinda miss seeing it

I was kind of thinking about the Viewliner and the Monorail. They were both in Tomorrowland and the took up similar ideas about future travel.

Totally agree that if Disney brought back Carousel of Progress I would scream with delight. I loved that ride as a little girl. I even loved America Sings.

My wife and I had a chance to go to the barbecue that was near what is now the entrance to Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Food was good and plentiful. If you did not walk out of there stuffed it was your doing. We also like the petting zoo that was located near the barbecue area.

Can you do the same thing for Walt Disney World attractions?
@TimeTraveler-YT Жыл бұрын
i’m surprised no DCA rides were mentioned since almost all of them are reskins. but i’m even more surprised you didn’t mention people mover’s rocket rods reskin at all(i’d put it below launch bay

The music in Splash Mountain was about as iconic Disneyland as it gets. I have a hard time believing they will be able to match that level of magic. The ride scenes will probably be better, but the music will more than likely be worse. And the music is one of the most under rated parts of an attraction that can make or break it.
