@@Rocky712_ "not get any outside assistance" is a very simple sentence that would be meaningless in a rule book over 200 pages. I get that the spirit of the rules were that a driver should be able to drove by themselves or retire the car. However, even though that's what the rules meant to say, it's not what they said. Otherwise he would have been disqualified anyways. That's why the 1 single page of rules from 1950 is now nearly 500 pages in 2024 =) He wasn't allowed help to restart the engine and it was strictly forbidden to push a car out of the gravel trap as spinning the wheels could injure marshals with high-speed debris. But in the end, there was absolutely nothing about hooking up a car with a running engine to the crane and placing it on track, because that is just too specific to even think about 😅

Fun fact: Felipe & Fisi in 2007 remain the most recent DSQ's to happen during a race. All DSQ's since have been post-race.

What got Felipe and Fisi disqualified was leaving the pits while the light signaling the exit was closed was on, during the first of four safety car periods in that race (for Adrian Sutil having a relatively minor incident at turn 4); the race didn't manage to stay 'green' for a full lap when that first period ended because multiple factors led to Robert Kubica having a spectacular wipeout just before "Hairpin Time!" (the hairpin at Montreal is Matt Gallagher's favorite corner to call it). Montreal's pit exit would claim Felipe's teammate Kimi Raikkonen the following year, when Kimi was the front-most car in a three-car stack-up (he was hit by Lewis Hamilton, who was further bumped from behind by Nico Rosberg; the big survivor was Kubica, who would go on to lead home a BMW 1-2, while Nico only lost a front wing that he was able to replace and recover enough to get a lead-lap finish in 10th).

I assume this is a situation where the team didn't properly notify the stewards or it's not allowed past a certain point of the race, but is allowed in some cases?

If the Car was crashed on Lap 1 when they waved the Red Flag, you could use the spare Car. But if youre unlucky and your Car still moved the moment the Red Flag is waved, then youre DSQ'ed. (Because the Car was still running before the Race got stopped.) It was a Dumb Rule and its good that its gone.

In 2017 NASCAR implemented their equivalent with the 'Damaged Vehicle Policy', where a car involved in an accident has a certain amount of time to repair the car and get back up to minimum speed; a car on this clock getting busted for too many men gets tagged with an automatic fail, which ended Matt Kenseth's hopes of winning the 2017 Cup Series championship.

A lot of people and news outlets made articles and videos about it with information about what it was....And they were all wrong. Their interpretation of the rule was wrong and they still kept pushing the wrong version even after the FIA wrote an article explaining how the rule worked. And there's no excuse from it, as all those regulation documents are publicly available on the FIA website and are the exact same ones used officially. They even show where the documents were redacted, which stuff was added to it, etc.

I can't speak for the entire history of F1, but at the times the rule was that outside assistance was allowable IF there was deemed a too large danger to just leave the car stranded (remember, regular safety cars weren't a thing until 1993 ...). So you could get away with it if you could argue that it was "necessary" for safety. I think it was only Hamilton/China 2007 (you can find clips of that) that got any outside assistance definitely banned (btw, in some racing series like IndyCar it's still allowed; heck, in many endurance races your car might be returned on a truck to your garage and you're still allowed to continue (not LeMans though)). And, yeah, also if nobody noticed, before the times of TV cameras everywhere. I bet that "somehow" happened a lot on tracks like Hockenheim or the Nordschleife. e: also, I should clarify; "push start" and "pushed back on track" were two different things. You had to have your engine running, then you could be pushed back on track. You weren't allowed to get a "push start" if your engine died while beached (well, that was the idea anyway).

Yes, I was frustrated by the lack of pressure. BUT I can see why Hafley chose not to rush more. Bringing pressure puts the corners on an island. They were down 2 of their best 3 guys and Hafley obviously didn't feel comfortable with the ability of Ballentine, Stokes, and Nixon one-on-one with those receivers. He had confidence in his defensive line and they did not deliver. Simple as that.

Seems like the moral of the story is don't let anyone push start your cars. So what I don't is at the 37:27 mark a driver stall the car at the start of the race, race officials push started his car but then the car gets disqualified for.....drum roll.......BEING PUSHED.
