This is undoubtedly one of the greatest summary style of videos I've seen in a while, *especially due to the shoutout at **1:04**!* Bravo! I also never knew that the GP40X and DH-1 existed until now. You also forgot to review the SD40J so this video gets a GEVO/10. /s

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video, and i did put in that reference to PRR 4663 as i enjoyed watching the Remarkable Engines series. I also was contemplating putting the SD40J on here, but i was unsure if it was a hoax or not.

I think Trains Mag did a full-length feature on the BL20-2 at some point. They were designed to recycle the chassis and electricals of GP7's and GP9's while still being a mostly-new locomotive. For some reason, though, they just couldn't make the economics of rebuilding versus starting-from-scratch work out properly in the end.

The "Joule" shouldn't even be considered an SD70, neither should the SD70ACe-T4. Neither have 710 series engines, nor is the Joule an actual diesel-electric locomotive!
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 Жыл бұрын
Is it even built by EMD as a new-build, or is it a rebuild by another company? The model-naming thing feels a little odd, now everything is an SD70 even if literally everything has been changed since the original SD70. Meanwhile back in the heyday a minor change would be a new model number. I've noticed that trend in a lot of things, the criteria for being a new model versus variant is a lot higher. Same with military aircraft, back in WWII and the postwar era many models were just slight variations of older models (like the B-50 as an upgraded B-29), while more recently substantially changed designs are considered variants, such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet which really only has in common with the earlier F/A-18 models that they are roughly the same shape (not size). The latter was apparently to make it easier to convince Congress it was a "minor change" rather than a new aircraft - perhaps the same logic is at play with the SD70s, the railroads are reluctant to change, and like their SD70s, so EMD keeps offering them "better SD70s" rather than new model offerings. The SD90's failure probably encouraged them to keep with the same name, to make it feel less new - and hence less unproven. Plus they've sort of run out of model numbers - what to do after SD90? SD100? Can't go with that name, as the SD100 is a Siemens light rail vehicle. And typically higher model number means more power, and the conclusion now is that there's really no desire for locomotives with more than 4,500 hp or so.
@Cnw8701
@Cnw8701 Жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 Railroads aren't necessarily reluctant to change, they've been doing it for years. PSR is all the rage now, but sooner or later, they'll roll-back some of those terrible policies and practices and go back to pre-PSR.
@Cnw8701
@Cnw8701 Жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 And since EMD is owned by ProgressRail-Caterpillar, technically the Joule is an EMD locomotive.
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 Жыл бұрын
@@Cnw8701 You're referring to "Precision Scheduled Railroading?" Hadn't heard of that before, looked it up - sounds like the same thing all businesses have been doing lately, trying to find "efficient" ways of cutting costs, at the expense of service quality, workers, safety, long-term viability, and overall resilience of their business model. Works great under the right conditions and in the short term, but if anything disrupts the system, or inevitably in the long run, it will all fall apart. But that CEO and those stockholders will have run away with the money by then or will bail out with their golden parachutes, not their problem. The recurring issue that corporate structures these days - in every industry - rewards short term gains and doesn't punish longer-term losses or strategic failures. This encourages executives to make short sighted and/or risky decisions, at the expense of everyone else.
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 Жыл бұрын
@@Cnw8701 So it's all part of the same corporation? I've not really kept up with their corporate affairs so much as the designs themselves. Everyone is always owned by someone else, always hard to tell what's really going on, what companies are actually affiliated with each other. We're almost to the point that, even if it doesn't look like it on the surface, everything is a monopoly or at best two competing companies, even if there are more brand names. At least for now there's still GE vs. EMD who are separate and competing with each other.
