Every farmers worst dream is to wake up to a phone call saying your cows are out and they're on the road...well unfortunately that happened to me and I am so so lucky there wasn't a nasty accident or much worse!

I think every livestock owner has the same reaction to a late night neighbor's phone call - this can't be good. Glad it worked out ok.

I remember one night when I went home after milking, my boss had gone on holiday. Later that night my mum and dad looked on the local Facebook page and it had said a cow had been hit on the road of the dairy I worked at so I got s call from the other boss saying I had to go down and deal with the cow that had been hit, so my dad drove me to the dairy when I got there the cow was barely alive not in a good way, all the vets in the area were closed because it was 7:00 and night so I went to the dairy and grabbed the rifle and I put the cow down In the middle of the road I pulled the cow off the road with the tractor, by then the cops and the tow truck had arrived and after looking at the car it was pretty destroyed. As a 15 yr old boy doing all of that buy himself it was pretty scary . Anyways I’m glad your cows were okay!

I worked on a thoroughbred nursery here in the US years ago when a herd of our weanlings broke out onto a major interstate highway at 3am. We were so lucky that no one was injured, a tractor trailer driver spotted them and blocked traffic with his rig and it took hours to get them all back.

My bloody bull lifted the gate of the gudgeons a few days ago. The gate opens onto a road with a 100km speed limit. Luckily a farming couple driving by stopped and got him back into the paddock. They notified my neighbor who called me. I was in town so had to get my wife to race out there to park across the gate until I could get there. He is a feisty boy at the best of times. So many things could have gone wrong in that short amount of time.

Andrew I started feeding a mineral supplement to the cows three to four weeks before calving. I have not had a milk fever case in 3 or 4 years since doing that. I have been using a product call. "AniStart". I am sure you can find a like product in your area. For the cows getting out on road. I used to have that happen until I refenced the entire exterior fence around the farm. It is woven wire with two strands of barb wire on top. Plus I run a hot wire on the inside to keep them from rubbing on the fence. Installed cattle crossing to get on the farm so not free runs out to the road now.

LOL well at least the trucks' accident wasn't caused by your cows - always look for a silver lining! Sorry you're having a run of bum luck just now, hope things get to going a bit better soon - sometimes it just seems like life is a bs trial for us :( Keep on going step by step - and the time my horses got nicked but they couldn't load the awkward one so left them out - thankfully not really a main road - but the carrot lorry was passing as they were trying to catch them before finding their owner - so they had plenty carrots to bribe them into a field with - so I was glad enough about that ..... I'd keep the hedge but put an inner fence on it for double with it being a road one - but it's always useful to have a hedge for catching the rain and the sun.
@rsh7932 ай бұрын
Random stranger question - would your insurance not help out though - like we have 3rd party liability we have to have for all stock - and they weight it on the roads around as well - so like I'm about 2km from the "main road" so they take that into the quote - especially for the horses! But it does at least cover me and for legal fees - although as you, I think if it's something like leaving the gates open then it's a different story!

Might have to see if the Aber High Sugar grasses or some other grass that tastes different are right to try for the farm. or the Regen ag approach of throwing a seed multispecies mix on in the hope the animals like something. If I remember correctly there is a bit of an interaction between Palm Kernel (can be very high in Copper) and the other supplement cations Magnesium and Calcium. The magnesium oxide from the Kunwarara magnesium carbonate deposit/ mine (Queensland Qmag etc) was said to have good bioavailability. Might need to ask the experts whether you back off the palm kernel (until the sun shines), hire a separate bale chopper to make a TMR with chopped straw/ hay, lesser amount of PKE and Maize Silage.// Some farms operate multiple drench systems, one for mag and another for bloat(even with just a backpack)NZ legal system has been operating a fines/ penalty business model for years. Look up the 2018 case where a linehaul truck was involved with 17 beefies on State Highway 4 and the farmer with left with a $273K fine/ penalty and interest. A West Coast?, South Island farm was fined $454K, after moving stock with an unmarked bungee across a road that injured a motorcyclist.

It’s negligence if it happens again soon. I.e you knew there was an issue and did nothing... Might be an idea to check all your road fences as most of them will probably be the same vintage.

I came home one night in nearby Ngahinapouri and as usual it was pitch black, no light and I just caught a glimpse of something like a cows eye…. It was a black bull, luckily it had turned its head towards me. The bull took up the whole lane. I tooted the horn and hope someone nearby heard me. Nothing.. I drove on home and rang a nearby farmer, met him and got the bull into a nearby paddock. My lucky day seeing that eye reflecting back at me. Would have been like hitting concrete at 70kph. The joys of living in the country. My farmer neighbour said to me when we moved out of town, if you see stock on the road, do something about it! Glad Fonterra were proactive, there’s enough death on the road round this way during the daytime, yet alone after midnight.
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 ай бұрын
you were very lucky too! that's the worst thing about them, you take out there legs with your car and the body would come through the window, you're right about concrete.

Just closed to the public in the way of a sign, if you live down here then your free to go where ever, its just been 'closed' to stop antisocial behavior like boy racers and give the cops more power

How much milk does a cow give in 24 hours ?
@jessmcleod38232 ай бұрын
What's the biggest cause of milk fever or what have you found to be the reason?
@fredpembroke69732 ай бұрын
Calcium deficiency. Occurs right after cows calves and start producing milk. Oddly prevention is to supplement with magnesium. You may have noticed a white powder on the grass for cows due to calve in some videos. That's magnesium. Andrew mentioned drenching the cows. He will be doing this every milking and adding magnesium to his mix.

The council has closed it from 9pm to 4am to stop anti social behaviour, pretty much trying to stop people doing skids and wrecking the reserve at the bottom of the road at the lake, I think its a good idea

Many years ago in 1979 my new husband and I were driving the highway at midnight out of South Auckland into the country and we hit something…it was a small black calf that had wondered on to the road. It destroyed our Mini headlight. The black calf just couldn’t be seen. It was scary as we had no idea what it was until we had a look. Fortunately we managed to locate a local farmer and told him about it.

Cows getting onto the road sucks but it happens unfortunately, I've definitely had it happen to me If the cows hated that annual she may of blown, if she hit that other paddock hungry and got a guts full of quality lush feed it wouldn't take much to tip her over with bloat I'd definitely keep the drenching going but I'd be checking for bloat after milking

yeah, That's why I was wondering if she had blown up, but they'd had a pretty good feed that day so I don't know.

What is the disease you speak of? Sounds like you're saying "Yo-nees". I'm American and not familiar with it.
@dondaddan2 ай бұрын
What is Johne’s Disease? Johne’s (pronounced Yo-knees) Disease is a chronic disease of profuse, watery diarrhea and weight loss or “wasting” in adult cattle (Figure 1) caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, commonly referred to as “MAP”.
