These would be great if you are breeding nano fish and needed a grow out tank. Doing daily water changes would be very easy.

I have used these for scuds and daphnia cultures. The spout doesn't dispense the live food, usually they are fast enough to swim away, but its good for water changing.

It's perfect for brine shrimp since they ate attracted to light.

I bet if you used a larger gauge of gravel, you could even go above the "faucet" and it would still drain.

You could also probably use some tubing to snorkel up above the substrate.

Or basically just put some larger gravel by the spicket and then soil in the rest if you wanted a small planted something, it would essentially be a french drain

What an awesome idea! I never even thought to use a container like that for fish. At the beginning of this year I needed a couple small hospital tanks to treat a couple fish. These would have made the water changes way easier and much less stress on the fish. I’m getting a few of these in different sizes. Thank you for sharing this. You earned a thumbs up from me and my subscription

If you use gravel, you could conceivably fill above the spout. I hope you show this in use in an upcoming video.

So I've got a 1 gallon glass one from Hobby Lobby about 6 months back or so. I filled it with salt water I made using Instant Ocean with a specific gravity of 1.025, dropped some baby brine shrimp that I hatched and now they're completely self-sustaining. I'm going to try to drop some newly hatched Amano shrimp zoes in and see if they'll grow out in there. Cheers! ~Ron SUBSCRIBED!

I have a couple of those rectangle ones - minus the spout and handles - that I use as hospital tanks. I drilled a hole in each lid to add a small airstone (at very low air pressure).

That would be handy for temporarily housing my bettas when I rescape their tanks! (Which I do fairly often lol). Right now I just put them in a Tupperware container so this would be a nicer little hotel for them!

I have used the 3 gallon glass ones for years. I bought them on sale at the end of the summer and I still use 3 of them. I have a thin layer of sand and plants in tiny pots in the bottom and a sponge over the tap/spout inlet. I also use a nano sponge filter and the smallest Eheim preset heater fits perfectly. I use them in my guppy and molly breeding projects. If I need to separate a favorite female for a week or so until I decide which male to pair her with. I also sometimes let a female give birth in one and raise fry for just one week. For the first week of fry raising it's handy so they can find food easily and no larger fry or fish chasing them. After a week they can hold their own in a larger grow out tank with older fry and even adults if there are hiding places. Using smaller tanks and containers like this has more than doubled the amount of guppy and molly fry I get compared to any other method I've tried. I wouldn't use them to keep fish in long term and I wouldn't recommend newbies use them because you really have to understand cycling and testing in such a small amount of water.

Perfect. You could put in an undergravel filter high enough so that the gravel & plants are above. Then you can drain all the excrement that filters through the gravel by opening up the drain. Nice thick substrate with the underground filter space to drain the excrement.

I can see that working. Attach a hose to the end of the tap, inside the container, and you can increase the height of that "syphon", allowing you to put more substrate. Cover the end of the hose with a net and you can protect your shrimp or sick fish. Not a bad idea for temporary tanks.

Oh it's a definite YEAH. I have seen these at several stores, in all shapes and sizes and made with plastic and glass. The glass ones can be heavy, oompf. There's a 3 gallon that I've had my eye on for a beta. I just haven't given into it yet. YET. Oh and Joanna, my dollar tree DOES have the 3 and 5 dollar aisles now. I could've cried. 😢. But the 3 and 5 dollar prices are still really good prices to. It's just sad to see how inflation affects everything. Oh well, I think I'm gonna plan a beta tank. 😊 Thanks for the great ideas that you share with us! Happy Tankin'.

Along the built-in siphon route, on a lot of new tanks I setup these days, I’ll make a pre-primed siphon out of PVC that’s always ready to hook up a hose to and drain (and even fill) with. Just some PVC, a few elbows, a ball valve, a hose adapter and a pre-filter sponge. On nicer display tanks, you can paint it black with some Krylon Fusion and you barely notice it. You just prime it once, shut the ball valve and it’s always ready to siphon.

❤❤❤ Hi, Joanna, I love this idea! I’ll be playing musical tanks this summer, and I’ll be using different sizes of these! I’ve finally sorted my tanks and moved a 125 gallon a few weeks while our workers had some doors of to make it way easier to get them downstairs. These small tanks will be handy to move the fish who are smaller than most I put in 125s, sorta like the fish in the tank behind you (which I love, BTW!) Thanks for the idea! ❤

Fabulous idea for a hospital/ quarantine tank! That reminds me of a question that I wanted to ask. I am looking to put together a community tank (honey gourami, neon green tetras, and pygmy corys). How long do most people quarantine for? If you have different types of fish, would you add them to the cycled tank all at once, or is there an order you should follow by type? Thanks!

If your fish are small but the fish food is too big, like bottom feeder wafers of all sorts, the $8.00 CVS Health Pill Splitter with safety shield is a great way to safety cut fish food to more manageable sizes to create less waste in the aquarium and save money.

Coffee grinder 😝
@phil3299
@phil3299 24 күн бұрын
@taz6122 That's a great idea for fish who feed off the top or mid level, but wafers need to keep their shape longer so the food doesn't get all over the aquarium. A pill splitter keeps a more consistent solid shape than whatever larger pieces are left at the bottom of the coffee grinder. A coffee grinder also may require more food to be cut up at the same time releasing the freshness quicker and possibly going stale faster if not all used at once. With a pill splitter, you can cut 1 wafer at a time.
