I suppose this one can really be dependent upon the game. We all like to point out the best examples of what we think represents the art of video games. Games with powerful stories. Incredible graphics including some highly stylized designs. Games with an emotional impact. But typically when talking about video games as art we tend to ignore the bad games out there. The Anthems and the Battlefronts. Games that are clearly deceptive products of a large company only seeking as much money as they can wring from the consumer. I think that video games are an art form. But like anything it can also just be a product. Not every book is a work of art, nor every movie, or even every painting. Similarly not every game is a work of art.

I think Y inversion is an age thing. Computer simulators and systems before Xbox and PlayStation seemed to have inversion as the default. I think that’s why we get so emotional. If you were raised on inversion it irks you to see all these kids telling you it’s wrong.
@jenslaughingfox98695 жыл бұрын
But this argument exists purely because of methods of control. I will never understand people who invert their controls on pc games using mouse/keyboard. But if you are using the joystick and playing some flight simulator, it's only natural that it's inverted, or in that case it's actually not. You pull the stick down to fly up. I have a great example of how you actually use both control methods, without probably even knowing it. In gta 5, when I'm on foot and let's say I'm shooting, I pull the mouse up to look up. However, when I'm flying, I press down on the keyboard, to fly up. It's so natural, it needs no explaining or understanding, it's just how it is.

Given the level of cruelty and bloodshed in medieval Europe, one can only assume that everybody was playing Mortal Kombat 24/7. They called it the dark age because they didn't have electricity left over for lighting. (Seriously, though, violence is in human nature. Don't like it? Try teaching people self-control and communication skills instead of giving them more reasons to be angry. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes.)

@@kosmique True, but everything CAN cause violence, depending on the person. Still, you don't hear anyone saying "Relationships cause violence" or "Sexual desire causes violence" for example. Because those are things that 99% of society have, so it has no use for distancing yourself from violent people and putting yourself above them.
@brent84073 жыл бұрын
@@SnorriSnibble I mean I get that videogames can be argued to be a non-essential aspect of life and if people believe it to cause violence then I can understand the aversion towards it. Thing is though that this debate basically comes down to the nature or nurture argument, are people genetically determined to be violent or do they become it based on what they see and experience around them? Videogames can definitely have a bad influence in that regard, but imo this will only apply to people who are unstable to begin with and who have a hard time seperating fiction from reality. There is no way that a mentally stable person would go inflicting damage on others simply due to games, it can be a trigger for the not so mentally stable, but so can books, tv shows, movies, relationships, whatever, if we were to ban all that then what would be left.

Clearly not an early PC gamer. Inverted controls with a mouse are extremely counter intuitive. The argument almost kind of makes sense if controls had evolved that way from dual joysticks. But they didn't, camera controls evolved in PC gaming first and mouse look set the standard. Up is up with a mouse it is logically consistent with the way you use a mouse in a 2D space and a 3D space. When camera controls started being translated to dual stick controllers the obvious control layout was to stick with up is up. This layout is simply the way most players learn which is why it is the default setting for most games.

Nathan, I totally agree with you. I am glad I have someone on the Access team who has the same view on the whole view thing. My sons play games with the non-inverted view and they never understood why I play using the inverted view.

I feel like Nath, Mike Channell from Outside Xbox and Ian Higton from Eurogamer all just sit at a bar, thinking about the good 'ol days when their inverted controls weren't an aberration, commiserating about what once was. "Ah, to be young again" says Mike. "I am young, I'm only 21" says Ian. *Nath and Mike glare at Ian*

Hearing Dave & Rosie talking about playing hide & seek reminds me of a game me & a mate played in the later Tony Hawk ps2 games.... hide & seek. Player 1 had a couple of minutes to get into a difficult to reach/spot position & lock off the camera. Player 2 then had to skate / run / climb to find the hidden person. Hours of fun that game within a game.

The problem with screen cheating is the past. Now the argument that if you don't like it don't play local is valid. But in the early days there was just no other option. So I was really frustrated with opponents who peeked at my screen.

When I played Syphon Filter 2 deathmatches, which was with someone sitting next to me, I used to tape an album to the TV to block each others view. Yes, my TV back then was small enough to just span the length of an album. It made for spectacular knife kills from behind.

@@mrmagoo-i2l, I guess it has something to do with language too. In my country, we may use X to say no or anything equivalent on our sms and whatnot. But one thing is certain, Japanese games tend to use O for yes and X for no. Heck, even my PS4 console uses that.

7:35 What Rob is saying. That is mindblowing. I didn't know any game does that. That's a genius solution because I still don't know which is inverted or and which is 'normal' or 'default'. It seems it differs by game.

I was always the gamer between me and my older brother but there was an occasion or two where he would be interested in a game and I would happily take the player 2 spot like Rosie but our arguments always came from when he "just wanted to play the game" and would skip all the cut scenes...YOU CANT PLAY THE GAME IF YOU DONT KNOW WHATS GOING ON

I have to agree with Nathan on this one. I've always play with inverted Y-axis because I used to fiddle around with model planes myself where pulling the stick towards you would increase the altitude and pushing the stick would make the plane go down... and I applied that same thing to my head... I have to pull my head back to look up and push it forward to look down. I like the idea of games having to determine YOUR default setting by just testing what you'd do when moving the stick to perform that action... which would be automatic invert in my case. When it's on a split screen you automatically peek at someone else's screen area. It's kind of second nature. However, I do mind when people in the same match start to screen snipe when your adversary is streaming gameplay.

I don't like when my friends try to convince me that to play games, I have to play in the PC. They say "Games were made to be played on PC. Mouse and keyboard is better than a controller. You should get games for the pc." For crying out loud, I like to separate games from everything else I do in the computer. I like to have a device made specifically for games, I like the controller and how it feels and how you move it in a natural way instead of the mouse's weird movement on screen. And I like the exclusives for the PlayStation. I'm not telling you how you should play, so leave me be.

I'm in camp Nathan. For me, I think it's a remnant from playing Super Mario 64, where the camera was an actual camera man you controlled with the C buttons. So the directional input is the direction he went in, which is why when you press up, the cameraman goes up but the camera angle goes down, if that makes sense.

The argument we get into all the time is when we are playing VS fighting games and who gets the left side. I remember renting soul calibur over and over to practice combos and specials, then go to my friends place and be forced to adapt on the fly to backwards Dpad inputs. It drove me mad!!!
