I think one of the reasons Kieren ranked over Arven is the fact that he kinda represents us (in one weird way). Lemme elaborate. Arven is a solid character with a super sad story but most people (especially the ones who the games are targeted towards) are unable to fully relate to him. Not saying there aren't people who can't, I have personally dealt with grief in my life and I can absolutely relate to him, but (and this is for the best) I can see why a lot of people that never faced grief only see him as a very well written character. With Kieren, he is this (at first shy) guy who wants to do big things but is always one-up-ed by the player. And he takes his anger by being a top trainer, catching a legendary Pokemon and so on. Due to the main fanbase of Pokemon being mostly nerdy people (who statistically have a bit hard on the socializing aspect of life, it is sad but we know that this goes for a lot of people) can in a weird way relate to Kieren. Maybe even without realizing it. Thus making him a more relatable character.

There are definitely Pokemon fans who’s opinions are quite divided on Kieran but characters with strong emotional depth and complex yet well written backstories are (almost) always going to be ranked highly amongst their fanbase. Don’t ask me why Kieran is at number one, I like him, don’t get me wrong but the popularity over in Japan is quite ridiculous and over Larry!? 🥴🤣

@@diego6424 he hated the MC more than his sister though, keeping ogerpon a secret was a way to "protect" Keiran and even though it backfired it was not done with malicious intent. Keiran flipped because of a combination of his admiration to the MC and it turning into jelousy when orgepon decided to pick MC, also Keiran forgave Carmine in the middle of the Kitakami arc so if it was that easy to forgive her then it wouldnt make sense for it to be the reason right? if anything Keiran sees Carmine as one of the things MC took away from him. MC was the reason not Carmine, id even go as far as to say that the same thing would've happened even if Carmine didint lie because ultimately Ogerpon will choose us

Heck, if we told him the truth, the Loyal Three would never have been revived from his “Shrine Punch”, and if he goes blabbing the secret out to the town? Nothing bad would happen, because doing Exactly that is what resolves the plot and gets Ogerpon to stop being hated B. His angry rant while trying to pull Terapagos out of the wall Clearly shows he hasn’t just Dropped his anger at her. He specifically called her out for being a jerk to the player, then suddenly switching it up once MC powers came into the mix. And given the rest of that rant, safe to say he’s Still mad at being lied at(with Teal Mask making the lie part too obvious to not miss via dramatic zoom ins when he first starts getting angry) Regardless of how you spin it, Terrible at being a Sibling, or just being a flat out terrible person, this Whole thing was Carmine’s fault. All because she stitched our mouths shut and forced us to exclude him because “I don’t want him to Feel excluded”

It's not surprising to me. The list of anime / manga / game characters voted by female anime fans at the beginning of this year (The popularity poll that Rika dominated for two consecutive years), Kieran is fourth in the rankings, after Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto (What a coincidence is that Kieran's Japanese name is Suguri, which is very similar to Suguru W). And Drayton also appears on this list at rank 17. By the way, I think the reason people voted for the protagonists is because they could be shipping with Kieran / Arven (and maybe Nemona) XD

Whatever parts I find endearing you may interpret differently, which is totally cool. ^^ Just my two cents: While I think she had flaws, I would not go as far as to say Carmine was a bully. Kieran was initially meek, and Carmine felt it was her duty to become the assertive voice for him when there were things he wanted to do but was too shy, like talking to strangers. It was her being protective while not being emotionally mature enough to express it in the nicest way. Her treatment of Kieran was called out in the story as being abrasive by other characters where she had to work on expressing that she always had the best intentions for him. Made mistakes too. It was interesting to see the reasons behind her behavior. I like that Carmine is head strong and assertive. While she does soften up, I don't think she needed to change.

Not only for the looks, but he is a growing character who has traits of most of the rivals (not counting Lucas/Brandon/Calem) so far. Starts meek and insecure like Wally Grows competitively like Hugh Has trust (and self-trust) issues against the player, much like Hop, arriving to almost hate us Grows being a prick like Silver or Gladion Is on top of a League like Blue Aims for unlimited power and almost catches a legendary, but after that legendary escapes, he understands that he must find the strength inside himself (and not with a legendary) like Paulo from Pokémon Masters Ex

Kieran’s arc really hit me hard especially in the indigo disk. The way he broke down after the battle then that dragon guy started taunting him- it really hit hard I really hope he heats that sort of arc in the anime with like or Roy perhaps as it would also evolve both characters

Arven should have stayed at 1..but to be fair Keiran and Arven had a fun interaction in the final part of the DLC [the Mochi Madness event] so you get to see a different side to Keiran which I guess swayed the vote to his favor. The poll didn't differentiate between the original professors and the AIs either and I feel that's also unfair since the AIs always get ignored in discussion despite being the real heroes of the game. Iono isn't popular in the west? Where do you pull that from? She's WILDLY popular. Drayton has a chill personality? He's a bully! Just like Carmine! He's a lazy ass who expects everyone to do his work for him. That's not chill! Thats manipulative! Carmine doesn't redeem herself. Even at the end of the epilogue she continues to undercut her brother at every turn. Arven is apparently based on the director's own life, dealing with parental loss as a teenager. I hated Kieran too. People go on about how we were "forced to lie to him" but he didn't DESERVE the truth. He was an entitled brat who thought Ogerpon owed him her attention because he had liked her story. He was a creepy fanboy and he couldn't respect that Ogerpon picked someone who wasn't him. See if the whole poll was skewed towards liking complex male characters who are also handsome, i would think AI Turo and his creator would rank MUCH higher. Why would liking complex characters be a gendered matter? I can't fathom why that would be. Like, we all know Rika is carried by her looks since she really doesn't have much of a personality, at least not in the game. And she's got a HUGE female fan base to the point of winning the yume poll two years in a row.

I genuinely don’t feel that much emotion from a lot of the Pokémon characters. I mean I barely felt much from Arven, his story just didn’t hit me. Only his parents made me feel sorry for but I knew he was going to accept his loss with grace. Kieran was the first to make me actually say I don’t really want the legendary just keep Ogerpon. I wish I could have let him keep Terapagos. I think it hit me harder then Arven since he never broke down over his loss Kieran was mentally beaten down multiple times over the course of the DLC

I'm happy my hubby Grusha made it to the top 10 x3 Edit: I don't mind edgy characters but there was something defintely WRONG with Kieran in the DLCs, being upset is one thing but damn, kid was legit concerning and needed help, also I was defs on team "tell Kieran wtf" for the first dlcs. I've never been a fan of Rika or Grushia's appearance. They're to androgynous. Rika has a skin boy's torso and a slightly feminine face, while Grushia looks like a woman because of the character design and clothes but is said to be male. It's too confusing and I don't like this influx of androgynous characters in video games.
