5 simple tips for language learners: 1. Follow creators in your target language (stick to topics you know and love like books or sports) 2. Buy a cook book, if you're learning a nonphonetic language try getting the audio with it. (Pairing your senses to new words as you shadow read goes a long way) 3. Get a language journal, write quotes you like and anything else you find useful. Next, try to talk your about day in your target language. (Working on your past simple is half of your verb-tense journey) 4. Reread a book you love in your target language and watch the adaptation if possible 5. Listen to music in your target language as much as possible

Native Finnish speaker here 🙋♀️ I speak English and Swedish somewhat fluently, but I would like to learn German! Have studied it a bit but still a lot to learn! There was a tip in the comments for listening to music in the language you are trying to learn. When I was studying Swedish I used to listen to the band Kent (in Swedish off course) when i was prepping for the exams 😊

I read The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I'd never read proper fantasy before. Over the years I've read middle grade and YA fantasy, which is of course much shorter. This was 1250 pages. Biggest book I've ever tackled. I was definitely intimidated by its size and the fact that it's the first of a whole series. But oh my goodness, I loved it! The world building is incredibly in depth and interesting. I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to try this. I will continue reading the series, but I needed a break first lol I'm 95% finished Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Completely different style. I am thoroughly enjoying. It's made me laugh, it's made me cry, and it's rejuvenated my creativity and how I see art.

I’m reading and really enjoying Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck right now, which is this story of a very dysfunctional and icky relationship set in east Berlin in the 80’s. But I’m enjoying the historical retelling of DDR more than the actual relationship parts, as of now at least. Vad kul att du lär dig svenska! 😃

I will always read whatever MB puts out. And I agree, Death Valley felt like a very personal exploration into something that was profound for her but not necessarily for a general reader. I’ve read a lot about grief and loss and was hoping for a nuanced take on the topic, but didn’t really get it. Which makes sense. Read an interview where Broder admitted to not having read much on either subjects-so this book was definitely an off the cuff catharsis book for her. Nothing wrong w that though, still enjoyed the read!

I'm curious whether you've ever read The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? by Edward Albee - I thought of that between your discussion of plays and just generally reaching for books that are more absurd/grotesque/etc. I haven't read this play since the height of the pandemic but I remember it very vividly because of how bizarre it got. I'd gone into it blind which honestly was probably the way to do it.

Is it me, or is Anna wearing a scarf or bandana that can pass for a strapless top? Actually looks great. It reminds me of the creative improvisation that went into the making of Hyman Roth's polo shirt in Godfather Part II, the black stripes achieved with the aid of a black marker. What a way to save 🤑🤑 The minute you mentioned weird fiction, I thought you were leaning toward something along the lines of Bret Easton Ellis transgressive aesthetics

In the video where she recommends short books that can be read in a day, she keeps mentioning that the book 'Cockroaches' by Scholastique Mukosanga is a novel even though she does place it in the non fiction category in the video. She calls it a novel twice if not more. It's a memoir.
@harrylew5 ай бұрын
@@aamnahere6250, yes, I think she often uses the term "novel" to refer to a book or work in general, glossing over that it refers only to stories that aren't true. Granted, more writers today are producing novels with autobiographical elements, but I think the fundamental distinction between fiction and non-fiction is still valid.
