hey guys! i’ve gotten a few comments asking why i skipped 112-110, that was an editing mistake, i’m sorry!! here they are: 112 - controllah 111 - glitter freeze 110 - m1a1 also, i didn’t include don quixote’s christmas bonanza because i honestly forgot it was an officially released song. just so you know, if i had remembered, it would be dead last. hope you enjoy the video!

I’m a relatively new fan of Gorillaz and I so so so regret not finding them sooner! I’ve only known the band for a few months but when I did find them, I was like “omg THIS. This is what has been missing,” because I’d just never seen or heard anything like them. Since then, they are my biggest inspiration for both my art and my guitar playing/songwriting. I will admit, I feel sad to have not been one of those fans that grew up with the band and have all these good memories. It almost makes me feel…invalid for how attached I am to them? but in the short time I’ve known about Gorillaz, I really feel like they’ve helped me through some dark days. I’m so happy you put demon days and empire ants at the top of this list because those are my two comfort songs from them. They truly are captivating and make you feel indescribable emotions

Empire Ants is my favorite as well. Not just my favorite Gorillaz song, but my favorite song, ever, period. I don't think anything will top the way it makes me feel, how quickly it can move me to tears or take me back to a certain point in my life. I'm glad it resonates so strongly with you, as well. You encapsulated my thoughts about the song perfectly (And yes that includes the scrolling text as well). It truly does cross the boundaries of a song, or a piece of music. It is more of an angelic and ethereal sound or series of sounds that whisks you away into what can only be described as a momentary bliss (pun intended). It's like it can just pull you out of any darkness you're facing and bring you into the light of a distant seashore, with the sun's reflection casting down on the gentle passing waves. Which couldn't be more appropriate for Plastic Beach. It feels like the closing credits for humanity. And you'd think that would be terrifying, but no, there is an immense amount of comfort, a sigh of relief. It's hard to explain better than that, as I feel it's something existential, it taps into the very core of emotions and the fiber of our being. tl;dr: I agree, Empire Ants good.

Re: Slow Country. First of all, thank you so much for sharing. I'm so glad you're around. Second: I moved away from home at 20, shortly after s/t came out, and I had a remarkably similar experience in which Slow Country and the English version of Latin Simone were like my personal lifelines during very dark times. Simultaneously such melancholy and hopeful songs. Why did I feel like I would be letting a Cartoon Band Guy down by giving up on myself??? I don't know but I'm glad I had that feeling. Amazing stuff, amazing music.

Look at me leaving interstitial comments as I watch. "The songs seem to run together" happened for me with Cracker Island while I tried to get into it by spinning the album in one go. Which I tried. Several times. But once I plopped the Cracker Island tracks into a larger playlist, they really came alive. Silent Running especially. And can I just say, the acoustic version of Silent Running absolutely catapulted the regular version into top tier for me? The lyrics are SO GOOD. DAMN!! All of Cracker Island is shaping up to be my fourth, possibly even third, fave Gorillaz LP.

Every Planet We Reach is Dead: the first time I really listened to that song (and I mean *really* listened to it) was 10 years ago when I had just moved house out of a string of bad relationships, jobs, ruined friendships, etc (I was 100% the toxic element) and was finally where I needed to be to get my life on track. I got to the point of opening boxes where I was looking for a distraction, so I goofed off halfway through unpacking, smoked up and flopped on the couch. I was absolutely off my face stoned and playing through the album in track order when like a thunderbolt from a clear sky, Every Planet decided to make itself known. Previously, I'd either skipped it or just left earshot when it played, so I guess I'd never had a chance to sit with it: so much so, that I'd even go so far as to say that it just plain *never existed* to me. Gorillaz decided it was time for me to correct this cosmic imbalance and between my new housemates state of the art sound system and my 'spiritually medicated state', I was ready to be taken to task. Forgive me; if you think I'm waffling now, I assure you- its going to get a hell of a lot worse from here. When I say my housemates stereo was state of the art, I'm not joking. He said he'd pumped close to $20,000 dollars into making that perfect temple to the auditory gods as good as it was and it showed. You heard and felt every note, every pop, every ting, crackle, dirge, thud, pluck, strum and blow and it was divine. You could play something as simple in composition as tribal folk music and the ancient gods that ordained its creation would be summoned into the room at its call. I had just come in off "Feel Good Inc" and "El Manana," and when that first slinky guitar and distorted keyboard chimed in, I gave a smug smirk and started bopping my slackened foot along with the song. I think I even verbally acknowledged it with "Oh hey its this guy" to the empty loungeroom. Then the ghostly choir let itself in behind me and I froze up in pure terror. Even without stereos the like of The Temple of Boom playing this song, the track is a f**king masterpiece. But that stereo turned it into an orchestral crescendo of apocalyptic force that glides and stumbles and soars and slams and tortures and soothes and amongst all of that, amongst that unrelenting castrophony it somehow managed to land a hard reset in my existentially ravaged mind and with meteoric power, it just tore through my bullshit whatever and ruptured straight into the core of my being with the full force of an irrevocably insulted and enraged god punishing it's arch-heretic and it straight up annihilated what was left of me. By no measure was this song gentle; it didn't need to be. I had to feel it and understand it for what it was with no confusion or murkiness staining it's clarity. In an album frequently described as being "post apocalyptic" I like to say that Every Planet *is* the apocalypse; nothing 'post' about it. It's just so jaw droppingly, heart stoppingly, magnitudinously... big. Sure, El Manana puts a crack through the world and tears out your heart, but Every Planet tears the universes heart out through its an*s and asserts its dominance over you with full, uncomfortable, terror inducing eye-contact. When the track played out (was that a Hurdy Gurdy being stop/started at the end?) and the bassline 'da-thunk' and clapping of "November Has Come" started up, I noticed that I wasn't breathing. I was trembling all over, *every hair* standing perfectly erect, tears flooded my face, I was a mess of snot and I was straining to speak. My every nerve was screaming and on fire and it was f**king transcendental. That song tore me out of myself and wrung all of the sh*t from what was left before slapping me back together again and sending me on my way. For that reason, every Planet We Reach is Dead is my favourite Gorillaz song; hell, it's my very favourite song. Your list is magnificent, I enjoyed listening to your thoughts and feelings very much, as well hearing about another Gorillaz fan's stories and life and connections with the music. In these Demon Days, this world of the Plastic Beach, its always good to know that there are other little corners of happy landfill out here. Keep doing ya thing. Tldr: this idiot tries to explain EPWRiD

This was a good read. I too used to skip the track (I think it was the sudden hit of the intro that turned me off everytime) I was a dumb 11 year old. I’m not sure when I fully realized the track’s greatness or through what device I was listening too (probably my Sony cd player around 12 years old or so) but man that song is so insanely great especially the last few moments of the song when it’s pure chaos and it ends with that string

fiinally, another person who appreciates the fall as much as i do! ive never been able to articulate why i love the songs on that album so much, but you've done it perfectly, especially with little pink plastic bags. the vibes and atmospheres on that album are unmatched

I don’t know if I should really get into this because of the legality of it but basically I was at a struggle point in my life I just lost a family member really close to me and I was going through my dad having another divorce and I started shutting my self off and doing things i shouldn’t have I basically had no hope for myself. One of my relievers was taking shrooms, on one of my trips I was listening to Demon Days as a whole and when the closer rolled around, it was honestly beautiful. Whenever the the guitars and all that kicked in I was sobbing because I had these visions with the song of me in the future with my own family and my own kids and my Dad and the rest of my family finally being happy. After that night I started trying to turn things around. It’s a struggle every single day but I’ll always come back to Demon Days to give me hope.

I totally agree with all you said about Demon Days. Whenever they don't close a gig with "Don't Get Lost In Haven/Demon Days", I felt empty. Ever since 2005, there's no other proper way to finish a Gorillaz concert. Last tour they have been doing mostly Clint Eastwood, and I don't like that at all, not even with the re-fix which I found amazing that they took that one to live performance after 20 years. I got a lot to say about all the ranking but it's late here (almost 4 am), and I gotta sleep now, but I enjoyed listening to you and all your takes on each song. Congratulations for all the effort you made, and glad to know they helped you getting thru bad times in your life.

Very interesting to hear your American perspective on The Fall. I always liked it but only appreciated it as an atmospheric experiment. As an English/Australian I don't get the US references. Maybe this is why I often collect with blur more than gorillaz

It is really a testament to the Gorillaz and Albarn himself that I can disagree so wholeheartedly about so many of these, and we can both still be valid. I feel like a lot of the songs on Humans were meant almost as a compliment to Demon Dayz with the emotional whiplash, discordant vibes, and a few almost cheesy moments. I appreciate the effort you put into making this!

We have the same number one! Empire Ants is very significant to me emotionally. I love Plastic Beach and got super into Gorillaz around the time I had my first girlfriend back in High School. It was pretty good as far as first relationships go. But, about one year in, her mom got a job in Texas and they moved away, thus ending the relationship. Even at the young age of 16, I knew a long distance relationship just wasn’t going to work. Despite this, I was still very upset and the night she left, I saw her one last time. After she departed, I went home, laid in bed, put on Empire Ants, and wept. This song really helped me through that tough moment and the sadness that followed and it will hold a special place in my heart because of that.

This is perfect, my hyperfixation with Gorillaz thanks you very much, Sahana. Also, Some Kind Of Nature is the GOAT. Badabingbadaboom. I wouldn't say there's many straight up awful Gorillaz songs out there... Except for The Joplin Spider! It sucks ass. And call me crazy but I fuckin ended up liking Colombians... Not sure how, it activates the scrimblo neuron on my brain. One last detail, I promise. The weird screech in The Speak-It Mountains sounds a whole lot like Murdoc screaming "Shut up... SHUT UP!" which makes the song interesting to me from a lore perspective.

Friday 13th didn’t deserve this. Sure Octavian isn’t great, but the instrumental alone is really good if a bit simplistic. For me it really gets the feeling of getting through a big or stressful event like a band competition or standardized test and being tired on the drive home but unable to sleep. Like everything is layering and overlapping because your mind is too worn out. Idk, but I’d give the instrumental a listen.
