What a truly poignant and illuminating depiction of masculinity. The subject has been attempted by poets and scholars since time immemorial, but never has it been so nakedly, so forcefully examined as in Home Improvement. The violence and savagery is clearly present in the grunts we see throughout the show. But there is a softness there as well. An acknowledgement of ignorance and quest for hidden knowledge. There is love in the grunts as well. The love of a man for his family, a man for his friends, and a man for his trade. The work he puts himself toward day in, day out. No matter how many times it may endanger him, how many times the blade he hoists may cut him, he is called to this work and a single understated grunt confirms this. The man is not unaware of this danger, however, and this fear of death is also present in a grunt. The knowledge that all he loves may be taken away from him with a single false step, or a riding lawnmower that the man, in his hubris, has enhanced until it has a power that exceeds his control. Even Icarus, the misguided son of Daedalus, may, after realizing he had flown to close to the sun, have uttered a tragic "HoouOh Nohhh...." All of the complexities of man are here laid bare by Tim Allen... it is beautiful.

I like to think that a finale to the show would involve the Taylor family waking up one morning to find a large, ominous monolith sitting in their back garden. Frightened but intrigued, the Taylors gather around this foreboding obelisk and, when Tim timidly places his hand on the cold, featureless surface of this strange object, self-awareness surges through his small, undeveloped brain like a lightning bolt. Then, with the world becoming larger and more defined as his sapience grows, Tim takes a ball-peen hammer from his garage, sensing its true power for the first time, and is able to wield it without fear of accident. Later, on the set of Tool Time, the familiar and welcoming jingle is instead replaced by _In Hoc Signo Vinces_ as Tim lumbers onto the set and brings the hammer down sqarely on Al Borland's head. With his rival struck down and his lineage secure, Tim, in the final moment of the episode, throws the hammer into the air. The last few seconds of Home Improvement are of the hammer spinning through the air, with the scene ending with a fade to the end credits, this time shown in complete silence, which is rumoured to be allegorical.
