Your analysis of this series' history, impact on the industry and FPS'es as a whole, and the soundtrack have reminded me what an awesome time it was to grow up in this series' prime. I'll be honest, I've never played ODST or Reach, and look forward to doing just that. Also shout-out to Ex-Bungie goliath Marty for being super active in small content creators' space, he has been everywhere in the last year or so with pinned comments at the top of people's pages. I actually don’t hate the library as much as most people. Fighting onslaughts of flood with the absolutely wonderful CE shotgun never gets old to me. I certainly can’t defend the overly repetitive geometry of the mission, but I love the crushingly bleak mood and atmosphere. It really hones the fact that the flood are a horrible unstoppable force. And as a big fan of bungies original halo lore: guilty Sparks small remarks indicate he recognizes us (humans) as forerunners.

I LOVE The Library. It’s probably in my top 3 levels in the entire series. CE Flood is a chef’s kiss. I always play it on Heroic, and it’s such a blast. You’ve got an infinite hoard of Flood, a shotgun, and (if you’re playing correctly) a Magnum. You feel like the most badass man in history, mowing down the hoard. Backpack reload your shotgun while you headshot a few of them. It’s such a fun time and I’ll even challenge myself to beat my top score and time without dying on MCC. I don’t know why this level gets so much hate. This level was built for elite gamers ;)
@Nirual86 Жыл бұрын
as a first-time experience or just generally playing through CE in Coop (which is most of my experience with the series when it first came out), its certainly a blast. It more starts to fall apart on repeated playthroughs with more experience. Having to wait for doors to be opened starts to feel more tedious than tense, etc.
@itsthemumu8585 Жыл бұрын
@@Nirual86 for whatever reason I’ve had the opposite experience with the Library. The more I play it, the more I enjoy it. By this point I know every spawn, every enemy that can spawn down each specific hallway, and all of the glitches that make the level easier (though I rarely use them). But I think it just boils down mostly to me loving to fight the CE Flood. They’re always a swarm, which makes them a challenge, they don’t die to one or even two melee hits, you have to be careful with your grenades, and it’s a test in how well you strafe and use your kit to your advantage, which is a challenge that gets my blood pumping

1:54 This is a very long comment but bare with me here: The reason why the interiors of "Cortana" don't look like High Charity from Halo 2 is because the level wasn't on High Charity. If your confused then let me explain. You know at the end of "Flood Gate" when your sent into the down Flood infested Covenant Cruiser and search to find Cortana's message? Well originally that section was going to be much longer and was basically repurposed for what ended up being the mission "Cortana". My evidence: You'll notice in the final game that "Cortana's" interiors are much more akin to the hallways of a Covenant Cruisers. The room with the Cortana Terminal is literally the bridge of the Cruiser and it's uninfected counterpart can be seen used as the Ship Masters Carrier in the ending cutscene to "Flood Gate", the opening cutscene to the "Ark" and in the memorial cinematic. You'll also notice that at the beginning of "Flood Gate" Miranda tells you to "Find the crashed flood ship. Overload it's engine core." Except you don't actually do this when you get to the ship, however at the end of "Cortana" you blow up the reactors to the infested cruiser reused as High Charity. The original level for "Cortana" can be seen in story boards and would have had you go back and explore a Halo 2 accurate, next gen infested High Charity. The objective would have been the same as in the final game, except the level would have a very different latter half. Chief and Cortana were going to be cornered in the Mausoleum of the Arbiter, where the Gravemind would finally reveal itself, after being in the shadows for the majority of the game. What would proceed can only be described as pure awesomeness: the Gravemind would infect/resurrect all the all the dead Arbiters and send them to attack you. To counter act this, Cortana would help you take control of a damaged Scarab, using it to fight off the Flood forms and the Gravemind. The level would end the same way with Chief escaping with Cortana, thanks to the Arbiter, and the three would head off to activate Halo. I honestly don't know why the changed this, the only possible reasons I can come up with are 1. There were disagreeing voices in Bungie, some who didn't want boss fights in Halo 3, after H2 failed to execute on them, and 2. Time was running out, money was bleeding and they needed a complete mission for "Cortana" so they used the last half of "Flood Gate". I think we can all agree that it's a travesty that the original idea for "Cortana" never saw the light of day.

Its almost certainly a lack of resources/time running out/simply game design changing as development went on. RejectedShotgun has a few videos that talk about the cut halo 3 levels, namely the "guardian forest" that was supposed to come after The Covenant. Id wager that game development time constraints likely were the culprit, as Halo 3 i think not only uses an upgraded/better engine than halo 2 (and developing an engine is no simple task) but they also had to crank out halo 3 in order for it to be the xbox 360's premier title. Halo 3 is a game that really shows that bungie tried to just make do with what they had. Besides all the cut levels, not being able to get back Truths original voice actor, some of the levels being unfinished (floodgate, cortana, guilty spark boss fight) and the short development time i think what we got is pretty good even without the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia
@jackofalltraits2145 Жыл бұрын
@@everythingsalright1121 I agree, Halo 3 to me is tied with CE. The reason why Bungie couldn't get Michael Wincott back is because he had signed a contract I believe which stated that his voice acting wouldn't be used in any promotions for Halo 2. However, due to H2's immense crunch, Bungie members were all over the place, and someone forgot about this very important detail and put some of Truth's voice acting into one of the trailers. Wincott was very upset, (not a Bungie but rather at Microsoft) and left the Halo franchise behind.

Funny you should mention Cortana doesn't look anything like High Charity. It was supposed to originally be part of a longer segment at the end of Floodgate. Instead of picking up Cortana in the second room, you were to fight through the covenant ship that crashed at the end of The Storm. That's why one of the rooms looks more like the Bridge of Shadow of Intent. It was a regular ship. I believe you were supposed to rescue Cortana at that point instead of near the end. Putting Covenant over the Ark? Definitely a based take. Covenant is the best level from H3.
@Nirual86 Жыл бұрын
yeah that actually makes a lot more sense. That crashed ship interior in Floodgate basically has the same visuals and it always felt a bit odd that it would randomly contain clues to Cortana's location... although that original plan wouldn't have made much more sense either. Seems like that whole section of the plot could've used some more revisions.

@@Nirual86 The end of floodgate too definitely looks like you would be going straight into Cortana just based off of it. The Library is really only a drag if you play on Heroic or Legendary. On Normal/Easy it's basically just 3D Doom. Silent Cartographer was my favorite for the longest time but in recent playthroughs of the entire series (and by that I mean the only five games IN the series, 4 and onwards don't exist on the same planet as me) it's admittedly been eclipsed by The Covenant. Two things I really liked were: A: vehicle sections and B: equipping a bunch of allies with rocket launchers, sniper rifles, and such and feeling like I led a bad ass squad. The level gave me both. It had a lot of powerful vehicles, powerful weapons, and allied marines. I also liked the challenge of keeping the marines alive. I know a lot of people didn't care about them living, but I thought it was fun. Also, I think I liked the scarab fight there much more, than I did in 3. Don't get me wrong, 3 was more interesting mechanically. But in 2 the scarab felt like an indestructible juggernaut. There was no way to beat it directly. In 3 they gave it too many exploitable weaknesses, so it felt meh. I remember finishing the fight the first time and being disappointed at how easy it was, despite the mechanics of the fight being so much more interesting. In particular, being able to shoot the inner shield and then the thingy from the ground without boarding if you got the right angle, it makes the scarab feel super weak. When enemy super weapons are that easily destroyed, I don't feel like a strong badass super soldier, the covenant just feels incompetent. Make me work harder to take it out.

Sacred Icon is one of my favorites, I really don't know why. Feels spooky, and the cinematic ride was lovely. High charity is fucking awesome. Horrifying...., two betrayals was extremely fun too. Ok, I keep editing this, but Assault on the control room is my all-time favorite, my dads too. Just blasting the covenant on a snow-covered area and compact spaces was fun.

I played CE in 2001. The thing that got me really engaged was the magnum as a load out weapon worked. FPSs at the time you dumped your load asap. Halo level confused me. But then truth and reconciliation. Omg. Sniping, grenadine, getting beat up in the hold out section ❤

Two Betrayals is a WAR And maybe the darkest point of Halo 1's plot. You just finish the grueling Library, you're like okay I got the index, this must be the way to defeat the Flood and beat the game. And then you get an even MORE grueling level. Fighting not just one enemy (Flood) like in the Library, but 3 ENEMY factions: sentinels, Flood, Covenant. And it's not contrived. Combined with you (humanity), you're in a game with 4 independent warring factions. And you have no marines anymore. Just you and Cortana. The scale of coming into the clearing with the Flood and Covenant in a full scale battle is awe. The first time you beat that level on legendary without dying is an extraordinary satisfaction. True AOTCR reuses the same map, but that level while classic is not much more than "tank go boom and sniper go pew," it's a turkey shoot of hapless Covenant. Underrated level, deserves to be #1 or anybody's top 5.

My hottest halo take is that I like the halo auto scroller sections. I like a shootout in a confined area where I can’t really run. Sure they’re annoying when bugs cause you to reset but I loved fighting the flood on the elevator in arbiter

Some placements seemed a bit surprising at first but the more you explained it and the video refreshed my memory, the more I found myself agreeing with your rankings. Some levels I might've placed a spot higher or lower than yours but more out of personal preference between two levels of otherwise very similar quality overall. In fact, a lot of the levels are very similar in overall quality in my opinion. Even the worst ones have their qualities and fall apart more due to certain enemy designs or flaws that could be fixed or at least smoothed out without losing too much.

Ngl I kinda like tsavo highway level. It's not a level made to progress the story, it only has the gameplay going for it. But then the remix of broken gates kicks in. Which is definitely out there as one of the best halo moments to me.

Huh, i kinda like Sacred Icon and Halo 2's flood. just sweeping a whole crowd of infection forms with a sentinel beam is super satisfying. Might be one of my favourites in Halo 2.

The one I really don't agree with is Truth and Reconciliation. The first half with the sniper is great, but on the ship it is not only hard, it is that most of the rooms are not that interesting compared to the forerunner architecture in Halo or the island in the Silent Cartographer.

Hold the hell up. I gotta stop you right at throwing the Library into last place. Library and Two Betrayals are among the best levels in the series. The Library gives you the best feeling of dread, feeling like a god among men, and difficulty all in one mission. I think it really cemented CE Flood AI as being my absolute favorite to fight against. As long as you know how to strafe, hit headshots with your magnum, and backpack reload your shotgun, the Library is such a fun, edge-of-your-seat level. Since I primarily play on Heroic (the way Halo was meant to be played), I occasionally challenge myself to see how fast I can beat it without dying. It’s one of my favorites right alongside Quarantine Zone, The Storm, Two Betrayals, The Covenant, and Truth and Reconciliation.

the library gave me the worst kind of dread; boredom. having to run through the same corridor over and over hoping the level would end soon - just for there to be another corridor of the flood jumping out of vents again? the level could've been fine if it was cut shorter. the length is super unnecessary
@itsthemumu8585 Жыл бұрын
@@I_Am_Wasabi_Man many could say the same about AOTCR, and that level is even longer. You can complete the Library in under half an hour playing as you normally would, and the Flood encounters are the best in the franchise.
@I_Am_Wasabi_Man Жыл бұрын
@@itsthemumu8585 assault on the control room actually has variety with its environment and combat scenarios. with having the scorpion tank section, and the covenant arguably being way more fun to fight than the flood on foot. the library just consists of running through a corridor, look behind and shoot, run again, wait for door to open for what feels like an eternity, and rinse and repeat for the next half hour. the level could've been so much better if it was cut shorter
@25inbomeportland Жыл бұрын
I GENERALLY agree with these rankings, but I think a lot of people forget that two betrayals has the most intense (and also biggest!) fight in all of Halo 1. There’s a set piece with two wraiths, two hunters, flood, turrets, gold, white and red elites, jackals scattered throughout, grunts of every type, invisible elites, and more, and the battle though it does include a bit of flood-covenant entanglement, it doesn’t last long, if you wait for the covenant to kill the flood, then you’ll be stuck with the largest onslaught of enemies the entire game throws at you. I’m surprised you didn’t mention it because, unless you’re a pro, beating that part on legendary can be some serious heart racing blood pumping action and threat after threat gets thrown at you.

I personally think the hardest level in CE was definitely Two betrayals. especially that one section where you’re on a bridge and there is a flood with a rocket launcher and there’s another bridge to your left with a bunch of covenant and there’s also a banshee flying overhead. I don’t think I’ve ever once considered that truth and reconciliation was that hard. I thought it was a total blast.

I think my favorite maps throughout the whole series are the ones where you can have allies with you. I mean dont get me wrong im incredibly lonely like every other gamer so its nice company, but more importantly, doing Heroic and Legendary runs where you dont lose a single Ally is incredibly challenge and fun and always will be for me
@RobDaKid87 Жыл бұрын
Damn some of these shocked me. I like the library and 2 Betrayals was my favorite level in the original Halo. It was assault on the control room but had flood too. Thats why i liked it.

2:58 when I played halo 2 on legendary for the first time I skipped the tank entirely and ran past this part to when ship master brings in the spectre there’s actually a gauss hog that comes across the bridge it took a couple tries but I just killed the driver and snuck up on the gunner then drove the hog, pushed the spectre off the cliff and shipmaster and his elite got in and I finished the level with it, I even killed a rocket flood and gave the spanker is the passenger elite so it had extra fire power. It was very fun and how I’d recommend finishing the level
@lyras.91616 ай бұрын
As someone new to the franchise, I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion of the Library. I /hated/ it. Yes, yes, it demonstrates the threat of the flood, the slog is the point, etc. - GS343 already did that, and much better.

Library was the most relaxed ride of the whole MCC legendary run I recently completed. I like popping those jumping spores with a magnum, gathering a train of combat forms into a huge stack and popping it with a grenade. Only died twice when the monitor takes its time to open a door. I completed Library on the PC port in 2003 the previous time. Sure the Lib looks a bit boring but I don't understand the hate. Chief can actually stay in the open for more than two seconds.
@clintcook8691 Жыл бұрын
I remember going through the triology for my first legendary play through about a year ago and I kept track of my times (along with MCC). TRC was my longest timed mission followed by AONCR. I beat Halo 2 faster than I did CE which is wild to heard how 2 is harder because of the jackets and brutes you fight later on.

Yoo truth & reconciliation is legit fave for me. It's the ultimate level to like--get that peak Halo experience in an afternoon after school/work, I remember playing it with my dad so many times as a kid. It's always hard to say its my favourite just because all the CE levels are A+ or S tier (not you Library) but it's really the one with the most fun level design, encounters, playstyles, etc. I actually always thought the non-vehicle parts of halo CE were the strongest anyways.

My personal unpopular opinion is that I really like Halo 3's Cortana. I always felt that the level not looking like high charity was a good story element that made sense. The once illustrious artificial planet/city is now 100% a disguising flood hive with a cool layout. Also I don't mind fighting the flood and I felt that Bungie got better with the flood since the library. I wish there was a Gravemind boss or cutscene of Chief weakening him with a grenade or something before blowing up the Ark. Lastly, I like the Cortana jump-scares throughout the campaign.
