It's too leafy I don't want to make my animals sick. Me "the farmer" - wondering why I didn't just big bale it an sell it to the dairy so I don't have to listen to crazy horse people....

I think one of the most humbling moments of my adult life was realizing my hay man only remembers me because of my horses. I called him to set up a hay delivery and started with "Hey it's [insert my name here], up by highway 2A. I was wondering if you could do a delivery for me sometime in the next week or so", he thought for a second then went, "You're the one with the herd of giant horses, right?" Shout out to my draft horses for being memorable I guess lmao

Trevor, Feel your pain. We farm in Southwest Pa raising stocker cattle and hay. Some of the hay we make is on leased ground. We'll have rain every other day for a week and a half, and the landowner will call and ask, "When are you going to bale our hay?"

You sir haven’t had the pleasure of dealing with Alpaca people that shear the wool for show…I mean dear god the ONLY way you can get close to an approximation of the orchard grass/alfalfa mix % is during the seeding when you calculate your rates… “that’s looks more like 85/15 and not 80/20….i gotta have 80/20, I can’t feed anything but 80/20….” 😩🔫

You nailed it. People seem to think that hay is somehow handcrafted and don’t understand why there are so many factors that you do not control that determines what the hay is like. And then they call in December when we have clearly had a shortage because it was dry all summer and can’t believe you can’t sell them any. Why can’t you just make some more?

we got strick law around me... we can only sell hay to horses if cattle or sheep has walk the pasture as we have also rules about transport animals between area of quarantine zone as each state has its own protection zone and you need permit to transport animals betwen areas so animals diseases dont spread but its mostly for sheep and goats as scapies are common. still i understand this type of order as you have sometimes good year and bad years of hay grow so you want the better year haha but its rare that you have few years old bales but if you get extra you keep them as you never know what next summer or year will bring as you might need to keep more animals over winter or if your harvest will be bad in future but again my family dont harvest to sell.

Most customers don’t want 1st cutting, because it’s not as good hay. Then, the other day, a lady came to look at my hay and said she preferred 1st cutting. I almost fainted. My first cutting was really good this year. There’s a mule guy on KZbin, telling everyone they shouldn’t feed first cutting to their horses/miles/donkeys. If people wouldn’t buy first cutting, then the price of 2 nd and 3 rd would be 3 times what it is now and there would be a shortage of hay.

I know nothing about farming. Why exactly does the quality and the characteristics of hay change by the season?
@BalesHayFarmandRanch7 ай бұрын
Great question. With cool temperatures the hay grows slower, causing the stems to get larger in diameter. I usually use coffee straw and McDonalds straw as examples. Coffee straws and very small, thin. McDonald’s straws are large. People want small stems. 2. With cool weather comes moisture (most of the time) and moisture takes color away. 3. Cool weather also means more time in the field curing. More time in the field means more hours out in the sun. The sun takes color away as well. Then rain causes damage too. Weeds…. Several reasons. But the first reasons have to do with seasonal changes.

Waste of time on both ends. As a buyer I don't want to hear cattle quality. That immediately sounds like an excuse for low quality. Just be honest with a seller. How tall was it when cut. Leafy or has alot of stem content. Moisture content. Minimum weight of the bale. Stop bullshting and trying to sucker potential buyers. Your reputation on the line.
@BalesHayFarmandRanch9 ай бұрын
1. It doesn’t work that way. Do you know how many different kinds of low quality hay there is? When I say cattle quality, it means something. I then know what to look for. Reading your comment makes me think you don’t buy very much hay, or you are buying in a completely different kind of market where those things fluctuate. When a guy says I want “roper cattle” hay, I know exactly what that means. When someone says junk hay, I know what that means. All of our moisture is the same, bale weights are the same. This is retail hay market. I have #1, #2, #3 horse hay. 3 different qualities of horse hay. So, there are qualities of cow hay.
