We do the same thing. It’s nice to have the ability to move a full tote of wood from the shed to the house using a tractor. I cut, split, and stack in one place, then move it to the wood storage shed. It makes it so much easier. You only handle it 2 times. One to store, then again to burn👍🏽

So true! I hate stacking and unstacking and stacking again. This solves some of that.

Someone just said that they hold about a quarter of a cord. This particular one is 275 gallon tote. He said the larger totes will haul 1/3 cord.

We store our wood at our barn property about 1/4 mile away. This would be an easy way to bring it to the house.

We have about 10 IBC tote cages stacked with wood. I cut the bladder about 8”-10” down from the top and use it as a lid. I’ve seen some people cut the bladder at an angle and make more like a gable roof for them. You might not want to cut your cages so far down on the front/loading side. If that wood shifts while on the tractor forks, it could force the sides out. I had one do that because I cut it too low. I haul in a full tote at a time into my shop and load into the stove right from the tote.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind next time I stack some wood.

It depends on the variety. A lot of varieties survive the cold real well.

I have used the totes for this, but didnt think of putting part of the bladder on top. I wonder if you can just cut the bladder out from the bottom and use the whole thing? Probably squeeze the cage together enough to slip the bladder over it and cover the top and the sides.
@BIGALTX

I doubt it. Since the bladder fits inside it, I don’t think you could pull the cage in enough to get the bladder on the outside… If that’s what you’re talking about.

That's a fantastic idea! I don't have any use for firewood at all but I'm thinking those would make outstanding compost bins. Line with hardware cloth and cardboard, hook some on the front for a door and there we go. I'm wondering if the inner plastic would make a good liner or if it would be too soggy. Maybe just use it on three sides or just the bottom? Definitely doing this. My poor husband. I'm blaming you. I just have to figure out how to get it home. Truly not laughing at you (OK, I smiled a bit) because even though it was -10 in Ohio last night, North Dakota laughs at us so it's all relative. And you're right-anything over 80 and I'm not happy and over 90 I won't leave the house.

Compost bins are a great idea! Those plastic bladders won’t get soggy. They are hard plastic. However, you might want to drill some holes in the bottom so liquids can drain out and not make your compost soggy.

I have several of those IBC crates. I have discovered a few things that may be useful. The crates with 5 horizontal bars are the 275 gallon IBC totes and they hold 1/4 quarter cord of firewood stacked. The crates with 6 horizontal bars are 330 gallon IBC totes and they hold 1/3 of a cord of firewood stacked. When I cut the bars for an opening, I leave the bottom two or three horizontal bars and it gives the crate more rigidity. I also have found it useful to spray paint a number on the side panel to identify that particular crate. I then keep a log of what firewood is in each crate and the date it was split. That way I have a record of the length of time the wood has seasoned. These particular details are helpful when you have dozens of these IBC crates. Tim in northern TN

Keep your storm door shut around a split log stack, in summer, or the chipmunks will let themselves right in! That's fun! "Get out!", they run out of patio door. They have little personalities those things..
