Could you wrap with a landscape fabric or something easily changed to help block the UV or do you think the weather would still crack them?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 2 сағат бұрын
Personally, I think it’s mainly the cold weather that cracks them. We don’t get all that cold normally, but it’s just a combination (in my opinion) of cheap, thin material that just does not weather well. Since the orange tubs are not cracking (as far as I can see), I think it’s mainly the material of the blue ones. They’re just cheaply made because they’re supposed to be only used one time.

I have the same problem, likely UV related, with 5 gallon wicking buckets used for vegetables. Solutions, paint, wrap with panda fabric, replace every 4 -5 years, buy Earth Boxes, or bury the bucket in the ground to protect the plastic.

I'll have to check into that panda fabric.

My concern would be sufficient root depth. The runners are fairly shallow, less than a foot perhaps but the main root likes a couple of feet, as I understand it. I think the shallow depth plus the black color may give you a combo of vertical crowding, hotter roots in the summer, colder in winter and higher moisture requirements but that's all a guess. I think Earth boxes were designed for annual veg that don't need much room. How deep is the actual soil in an Earth box? Plus it's my sense the bottom platform of an Earth box would be no match for the blackberry roots. I see the roots growing through and causing all sorts of mischief. What I would do is double up the cheap tubs if you have enough. I'd put the plants in new blue tubs and drop them back into the cracked ones, unless you have enough to double up with new tubs. It's my sense that UV light is degrading the plastic so a better tub inside would be protected and would last longer. Then just replace the one exposed to the light when the cracking gets too bad. I also think that if the tubs are nested there'd be less pressure against the outer tub since the inner one is bearing the force from the roots, so that may make them last longer. Maybe paint the rims of the inner pots to protect from UV light. Or source a replacement of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). It's a nicely UV resistant plastic. It's used in playground equipment. Blue 55gal drums used for rainwater collection are made for continuous outdoor use and hold up well. Cut one in half, secure a lid to the top half and you've got two. Or if you can get used/free just use the bottoms. Of course you can cut them shorter if you don't want them that high but if you can spare the planting media that's not a bad idea to give them a little more wiggle room.

@BIGALTX

Nope. Actually, if you get snow, it will insulate them quite a bit. I found that only if the temperature gets in the single digits or below, are they susceptible to damage. Some varieties handle the cold better than others.

something else I did was that I started putting hale screen under my figs when I planted them. Keeps the moles out while they get established. Moles will come to the wet soil and tunnel around. I also double my tubes. 1 into another. Drill holes in bottom of the inside tube. 3 bricks on the bottom to support it. Outside tube to hold water.

Quick fix: Drop one blue tub that's cracked into one that's not. Longer Fix: Paint the new blue tubs with exterior latex paint that's made for plastic. Not a spray can, yep a gallon or two of Lowes paint. You'll have to prep the plastic. I painted mine 10 years ago. It's the UV that's killing your containers especially when thin.

Been following your blackberry grows for good tips and advice - much thanks for that. I got a blackberry grow going on and also in containers about same size as yours. Maybe the plastic in my containers is first use and not as weak as recycled plastic for end of use purpose. Your animal feed containers for the blackberry grow might not have been made from virgin polymers and splitting of the plastic was inevitable. I'm new to this, and starting off with doing Chester on a trellis along with a local wild variety that puts out a lot of fruit. Up in the north, blackberry wine is to my taste more pleasant than grape wine.

I come to YOU for the expert advice!! But are the earth boxes not too shallow for the blackberries even if the cf of soil they hold is same (longer and more shallow than the tubs)? I like best using God's ground but I understand the less work mentality of the tubs and feeling our own body's slowing. It just seems the blackberries are created to just go do their thing and a tub restricts it's drive to be a rambln' bramble! Hope this made you smile.

I don`t mind of they spread a little here in Louisiana and if they do I`ll dig them up and make a straight row with them. I mow the wild ones that try to spread into the yard and turn them into garden soil. My PrimeArk Freedoms have unopened blooms on them here in Louisiana but the cold hasn`t seemed to affect them. When I eat frozen wild blackberries in little one-serving mini ziplock bags I sprinkle just a tad of raw sugar on them. I`m gonna get a Ponca plant like you mentioned too.
