The one thing I hope this new edition brings with it is the ability for the Dark Angels to field Excindio Automata. For those not in the loop, the Excindio were literally the AI that almost destroyed humanity during the age of technology, neutered and shackled to a robot body that made Necron Destroyers look like teddy bears. The Dark Angels literally had to carry a kill switch for them at all times to prevent them from taking their hate out on “friendly” units, and they were only deployed by the Dreadwing under the most pressing of circumstances, like trying to kill a crazy primarch.

Thousand Sons are kind of weird in Horus Heresy, mainly because they were loyalists when the Space Wolves attacked them (Burning of Prospero) and as a legion they didn't do much afterwards as a traitor legion. Sure, they might have created a few stories for Magnus to make him a little more relevant but that is about it (and really, Magnus's biggest help was inadvertenly screwing over Big Es grand plans when Magnus tried to warm the Emperor of Horus's betrayal).

You know. I never really got the appeal of Horus Heresy as a game, since I only ever really saw it from afar as a “40K side-game” but this is actually pretty cool. It’s neat to see a more dense, crunchy game that also explores the factions (especially the SMs, but everyone too, since this is pre-crazy-religious-devotion Imperium) as they were, seeing how Chaos legions were before being formally corrupted, and how all the groups weren’t as “specialized” as they would become. I may need to give this a try!

Ian, you might like Liberation Force, a Shattered Legion rite in HH book 6 p. 196. Representing pro-Loyalist locals rallying behind a small Raven Guard force to take down their cruel traitorous rulers, it gives all Militia units Fearless when they're within 6" of an Astartes unit. It's the only rite currently available that shows Space Marines not using bog-standard humans as meatshields (even if you the player can still do that).

As someone who hasn't been into 40K since 3rd/4th edition, this is very interesting to look at the Horus Heresy factions... for example how the Heresy era Space Marines are much more "Ancient Rome" in their look and organisation (complete with the officers having titles like Praetors and Centurions) or how the Imperial Guard did not really exist back then. To say nothing of the Adeptus Mechanicus having units that are as out of place in the 40K setting as anything the Tau have.

And yet the beauty/tragedy is Chaos executed it perfectly. One loyalist legion devastated and another annihilated and converted. I really hope the new edition keeps this, as it appears to me, sense of customization and narrative fluff in army lists, and does not go the way of current 40k meta chasing. I like the idea of the limitations shown in this video, based on what faction and sub-faction you are, as well as how you build your leaders. I hope that stays.
@filwilliamson91492 жыл бұрын
There have been a bunch of leaks for loyalist and traitor marine rules, as well as core rules. There is still a large amount of customization for units, Consuls are still a thing, and rites of war remain. For Legion rules, they seem to have removed the drawbacks to legion traits, like how Sons of Horus couldn't receive buffs from non-Sons of Horus, but the traits themselves are still pretty unique. Also, each legion gets its own Advanced Reaction which only they can use, unless you're Alpha Legion in which case you steal one (according to leaks). A lot of the unique units remain as well, and they still have plenty of unique flair to them. Same goes for characters, and to me it seems that they've expanded on the diversity of unique character traits.
@hansyolo82772 жыл бұрын
@@filwilliamson9149 That sounds good, lets hope the rules will be better than current 40k then, thats my biggest concern.

@@hansyolo8277 From what I’ve seen the rules are still very similar to the current Horus Heresy rules, so if your idea of better than current 40k is that type of rule set then you should be good to go. Edit: The main change that I can think from what I’ve seen so far is the inclusion of Reactions.
@dmeep2 жыл бұрын
Your playgroup will dictate if you agree to play fluffy stuff or if its list optimization and winning that becomes important. A suggestion for playing for 40k is crusade narrative and having the loser get reinforcements and upgrades so balance out any difference in skill lvl. We played fightinggames like tekken/streetfighter at uni were the winner had to drink a certain amount of beer for each round won negating difference in skill with drunk fingers and reflexes. If your faction pour in more resources at a defeat instead of the winner getting a shiny new relic blade it should prevent snowballing and lvl the playing field even for those with older codexes.

Going rouge, or even just losing contact with the rest of the Imperium for a long time - without falling to Chaos. The galaxy is a big place.
@ScooterinAB2 жыл бұрын
That is basically my Chaos army. I'm using the old Red Corsairs concept, where they are more renegade than Chaos, and while the army is built around a few Chaosy things (like my Death Company Khorne Berzerkers, or the captain being in league with a Chaos tainted Warpsmith), it's mostly played straight. My Helbrutes are just Dreadnoughts. The captain is an unmarked Chaos Lord. Stuff like Daemon Engines are going to be more techno-heresy than full blown daemon nonsense. Although I do wish GW would explore the rogue but not Chaos angle more. The Red Corsairs are just the new Black Legion now, and Space Marines doubled down on being Space Marines after Primaris Marines came out. I really wish that had caused a civil war that wasn't fueled by the Ruinous Powers, so that players could have Marine armies fighting other Marine armies more easily.
@F1fty2 жыл бұрын
It is very possible to do this in 40k anyway. Model a marine or chaos marine army how you want it, and just call them renegades. Or, even better, call them secessionists and play the Badab War.

As I commented on the Horus Heresy Plastics video, when building an Imperialis Militia or Cults army, you aren't limited to GW models. (I mean, you're never _really_ limited to only GW models. It's a game, you can play with whatever you like.) But specifically here, your human troops can be taken from across the galaxy, from a myriad different cultures folded into the nascent Imperium. As such, so long as your gaming group -isn't anal about it- is okay with it, you can use whatever human-y model range you like to represent your Militia or Cult. Historical miniatures are really useful for this, as they are cheap, plentiful, come in loads of varieties, and can usually be kitbashed into compliance (heh heh) fairly easily. (There are many third party bits sellers, like Anvil Industries or Victoria Miniatures. But I also point to Wargames Atlantic, who have a plastic sprue of futuristic weapons for a low price, among many other great products.) Given that many established Horus Heresy tournaments in the last few years were unofficial ones, I imagine many of them may be less dogmatic about third party miniatures. Although that being said, there's also a good chance some of them might be particularly salty about you showing up with a kitbashed army of historicals that cost much less, while they paid a fortune on Forgeworld resin. I wouldn't let that discourage you - let them be mad - but know that if there's enough of those people in your local HH gaming scene, they may have the weight of consensus on their side. So, ask around about this *before* you commit to a big army.
@F1fty2 жыл бұрын
You're right, and it was not that long prior to Covid lockdowns that I used an entire Anvil Industry Militia army at mine and Ian's gaming club (HATE). Ian himself has posted an army profile of his Custodes which are predominantly Scibor. I think the video he did was best as all-Citadel for people to whom that matters. Those that are familar with the acepted Lore of The 4Ok universe of The Horus Heracy back story know this. The post-human quasi immortal Emperor of Mankind creates twenty legions of pseudo-monastic Arstartes Warriors colloquially known as "Space Marines". According to legend, When "Warmaster" Horus rose against his Emperor, nine legions remained loyal to their god-like monarch. Another nine stood with the Warmaster and succumed to the forces of Chaos. The 2nd and 11th legions went missing without a trace. But now they are back. They serve neither the God Emperor or the Chaos Blight. Instead they serve the Proletariat . Yeah, totally. The legion traits are quite general so they don't JUST apply to the one method of war they're known for, you're not losing out on power or something. In other words a completely new system to wade through and learn, as brother meets brother on the battlefield and wages war, using simplified weaponry of the past era.

Imperial Militia has certainly helped keep the Squat flame alive through the dark times. Abhuman Zealots deserves some kind of award for going above an beyond.

Yeah, with the new Squats on the way my little old metal guys are gonna be Heresified with that exact provenance.... If it still exists!

Wow, these rules sound super cool! I wonder why I never got into playing HH? *sees the prices of leather bound tomes that make up the rule books and the price of ForgeWorld resin. OH. THAT's why.

For what it’s worth, it’s entirely possible to build a plastic only Horus Heresy army. (Ian’s even got a video on this!) The “red books” are much cheaper, and the black books themselves are 300-page, faux leatherbound, oversize hardcovers with illustrations throughout. They’re absolutely worth it.

Ian, love the content. Would you consider reaction videos to Warhammer 40k videos in the future? Cheers

Most 40k fans are famliar with the destuctive a sudden strike of Space Marines can bring, whether Traitors or Loyalists. A Strike by the Sons of Scargil (The legendary missing Second Legion) and it's offshot 'Unions' (synonymous with chapters in loyalist marines). Picture a marauding horde of towering Khornite Beserkers bellowing their signature chant of More Blood for the blood God. The chant is halted by a snide derisive snort of great volume. These infamous traitor marines become aware of a row of merrily burning oil drums with hunched figures in full Power Armour warming their bared but still gigantic hands upon the heat provided. Each has a giant placard bearing a slogan. Then the Shop Steward (Functionally a Librarian or Chaplain) speaks in a voice like Sean Bean.. "More blood? More blood? When will it be enough blood? And you know whose blood it will be? The blood of the working warrior that's whose. If this Khorne wants blood so bad, would it kill him to get his fat bourgeois bum crack out of the Eye of Terror and do some honest graft? Who controlls the means of destruction? And where is the blood you earned by the sweat of your honest proletariat fist. More blood? More blood for the Working Marine. And that fat bastard is not paying it to you!"

Love your videos on the Legions mate.. Though I've never been able to figure why in multiple of your videos you've kept repeating that the Rout are the only ones who see themselves as the emperor's executioners. Not sure if you read the novels at all or just the codices & other materials like that, but in the over 30 HH books I've read, I only recall like 2 instances they referred to themselves as such & like 10 times that where others- cousin legionnaires, tech priests, civilians, etc refer to them as the emperor's executioners or the Emperor unleashing his wolves again. So really not sure where the "it's just them who think so" always comes from.. But yeah, you do really good work tho

Still waiting for the day Heresy adds xenos factions to it. If they brought back squats anything can happen at this point, and by the emperor I want some 30K Eldar ;0;

I would love to see a 'crusade' era book that gives army lists for the existing Eldar and Ork ranges and then perhaps add a new xenos race with their own new line of miniatures. But it seems the current focus is on the actual Heresy rather than the fighting before it.

My Space Marine army is Black Templar, so I've always been excluded from 30k because there's no Ork army list 😭 I think they could just copy+paste Orks over from 7th. Edition with few problems, since Orks weren't that different back then than they are now (the War of the Beast being an exception). Eldar would have to likely be a new army with a change in the model range, though. During the Heresy, they were still reeling from the Fall. Commorragh wasn't unified under Vect, the Craftworlds were still developing the path system, and Exodites likely weren't as aware of how Slaanesh works as they are now. Probably the most important thing missing are Harlequins, who would just be starting to develop in 30k. I could see something really cool where Eldar are this mishmash of tech. Like they're completely paranoid to use psykers so recently after the Fall, but they also still have a lot of the pre-Fall tech intact. You'd have absolute psychos in their ranks, too, who caused the Fall to happen in the first place, but were in the Webway (i.e. Dark Eldar before Dark Eldar). Just imagine the equivalent of a Craftworld Exarch but because there's no path system, they have the obsession and sadism of the Haemonculi.
