Oh I know. I used to travel a lot for work. Usually the only time I'd manage to get breakfast is if I had a reasonable flight departure where I was leaving the hotel at 6 AM. On vacation, I get up at 9 and turns out breakfast stopped at 8:30 or something.

A tip from someone who's spent over a year of my life in hotels. Always bring an Ethernet cord for your laptop.. Most hotels are still wired and for some reason rarely ever limit Ethernet speeds.

I've been working front desk since I was sixteen, and this is mostly accurate. Sometimes the excessive typing is just me finishing a Facebook rant about how much I hated the last guest. Most of the time though, it's me trying to fill in necessary fields, wondering how the hell reservations can come through with none of the information required to even make a reservation in the first place.

Totally relate to the lamp (can never find the damn switch!), the shower (usually freezing) and the super slow wifi - so true! Just missed the sound of traffic that goes on til like midnight and then starts up again at about 5am, so you never get a proper sleep. And either the room is freezing with no way of heating it, or it's boiling and no way of cooling it, so you have to open the window - to, of course, all-night traffic noise!! Also - missing toothpaste/soap - why does a hotel almost never have toothpaste?!!

Some people can be sensitive or outright allergic to some of the ingredients of some toothpastes. And some people don't even use toothpaste (most of the health benefits are owed to the brushing). Accomodating everyone in that regard would have too high a cost for such a tiny benefit.

It was an "Inn & Suites" It wasn't in the city. :-) Anyway... housekeeping would show up early and wake me up, so I decided to leave my "Do Not Disturb" sign out the next night. The considerate housekeeping staff decided to call my room and say "We noticed you had your 'Do Not Disturb' sign out and was wondering if you needed your room serviced." Holy WTF.

American tap water is perfectly fine. Evian and other companies made a concerted effort in the 80's and 90's to discourage Americans from ever drinking the same water they use for bathing, cleaning their dishes and cooking. It worked remarkably well.

Some staff and cleaner are even friendlier (and helpful) than the arrogant counter attendant at the lobby. So if I stuck with difficulties I just ask the cleaner rather than ring the telephone to the main counter. It's one of those tricks that save up time and so efficient

The Lamps with that turn switch everywhere... I am always afraid of unscrewing the switch when I am in Canada (tho technically not possible). Same goes for the Faucet in the bath, which needs to be turned a specific angle to run water. The receptionist, calling us at 6:00 AM to wake up, albeit not asked for a wake up call. The AC unit, which is very loud during the night.
