"5-2 but what is even the point?" was amazing. All obstacles taken out, no enemies, and it scares you if you try to jump into the buzzsaw. Amazing concept

I can elaborate a little more on that! As the second level of world 5, I felt there was an expectation that it should be a spectacular highlight of the world, and I decided instead to pull a hard swerve and make the biggest possible anti-climax. Originally the world was meant to be more parody than earnest tribute to the SMB1 remake worlds, and I wanted levels like this to make a subtle meta-story about the level creator going insane. Here the emotional numbness is symbolized with silence and lack of interactables, and harmful ideation with the poison shroom past the goal and the inaccessible sawblade being the only thing to make a sound. The liminal discomfort and bewilderment on Dave's face is exactly the reaction I was hoping for.

Level creator here again, mostly to come to the defense of the Dark Water level. 3:46 The first thing you see in the level is an arrow pointing down a pipe like you should enter it, but when you try to do that, instead the screen lights up. It happens repeatedly as Dave spams down. This is a property of Mario, not of the pipe. The pipe is fake. The pipe is just like any old ground. You push down, you see the key, you move on. This was to tutorialize this flashlight mechanic, and from there you're supposed to look for safe ground to land on that hasn't been turned to spikes to light up again and this will help you look for the pink coins. I turn to the level creators and players in the audience. What could I have done to tutorialize better?

Either make any safe ground a pipe to connect the pipe to pressing down or have it spelled out in a starting room. Pipe+ down = empty box. Below is a pipe. They press down and it lights up. I would replace the pipe with ? Blocks or some other unique block though. People see pipe and down and just assume you are supposed to enter it. Then are confused when they can't. Or rename the level 5-2, but you need a flashlight. This primes the player to expect it to be dark. Then when you show the light mechanic they are more likely to put it all together from the title. Just a few ideas. Grain of salt and all that.

Exactly I was just screaming at Dave. Though he did duck as fire Mario later into the section and it didn’t light up. I assume that is a bug.

@@discussions. I think that's a joystick moment possibly exacerbated by the NSMB style. The flashlight really needs a solid, clean down press.

Sometimes, it's sadly the case that no matter how well you give a gameplay-based tutorial, someone will still just miss it anyways. And even if you give a WRITTEN tutorial, they may still miss it. In this case, we had the former, as DGR just decided that having his hands glued to the spring like his life depended on it caused him to not get the whole idea as he never had much reason (or chance) to stand on solid ground. One way to maybe give an additional hint is by renaming the level? Say "but duck brightens your day" or something like that.

I'm pretty sure a big chunk is 25-36 or so. But ya know. DGR is particularly family-friendly, so folks don't mind their kids tuning in.

I've been subbed to/watching DGR for like 6 years now, and he's a freaking HOOT! My one and ONLY dislike/comment I have is that Dave treats Amanda kinda badly. I hate seeing that. He's dismissive of her, he ignores her, and he clearly doesn't like it when she goes into his studio whilst recording, as evidenced in this very video. I dunno, man. I'm still gonna watch #dgr, I just wish he'd be a little nicer to his wife is all.
