Tex actually commented on the melodies shorts in an old obscure interview. Basically he said building a cartoon around a song was obnoxious and that he felt it ruined the cartoon, but because of a perfectionist mindset he could never allow downright horrible animation to be included in them on purpose

i loved watching both part 1 and 2. i can definitely respect watching over 200 8-9 minute shorts, even with how tiring it can be. it's also really interesting and fun to see how much looney tunes has changed, from being somewhat boring and mediocre shorts to watch in the cinema, to being the crazy and wacky looney tunes we know today. i cannot wait for part 3 and all the other ones!

I really enjoyed this video, very interesting and informative. Also I love how you found restored or at least high quality footage (Not all) of this classic 1930s Shorts. Keep up the good work, can't wait for part 3. 👍

The shorts almost immediately seem to perk up a bit with Tashlin, Avery and Clampett in the director chairs. Tashlin was an extremely underrated director in my opinion and some of his shorts reviewed here, "Now that Summer Has Gone", "The Case of the Stuttering Pig" and "Porky's Double Trouble" are absolutely terrific. I also really love "Little Red Walking Hood" from Avery. It has a nice, sketchy style going for it and the humor hits really well--especially the ending and Grandma stopping the chase scene to talk to the grocer on the phone.

"What is it with Warner Brothers cartoons and spanking monkeys?" 'Spank the monkey' is a euphemism for masturbation. If you ever see a scene where a chicken is getting choked, the same thing. Basically it's an adult joke in the form of a visual pun.

I appreciate those "celebrities of the era" caricature shorts as time-capsules. What if they were gone for good and what if today's animated sitcoms never referenced today's celebrities or current events? It'd be like saying history never happened, it'd be like all the times we live in today never happened or even mattered. These shorts help us acknowledge that they've existed and such a tradition helps acknowledge that _we've_ existed. The new generations need to acknowledge that people and things existed back then, or else in this pattern, the newer generations after us won't -ackn- understand that _we've_ existed or mattered. It's just something I worry about every day as someone of late Gen-X.

The thing I really noticed here, that I never thought much about before is Bob Clampett is the first to really have the WB cartoons LOOK like WB cartoons. Before Clampett came on board, the overall character designs were still in the "cutesy Disney-like" phase. You could argue Chuck Jones might have also had a hand in reshaping the WB cartoons during this period as well, as he actually co-directed those early Clampett cartoons, but was left uncredited for unknown reasons.

One scene in Buddy Steps Out still lives rent-free in my head: that music cue when the Atlas statue comes alive and rescues Picture Buddy from the window. I haven't seen the cartoon itself in over 30 years, but I remember that horn going, "Bap, Bap, Bap, Bap-a-lap-a-lap, Bap-a-lap-a-lap!" It's cringy but catchy at the same time. 😬😬😬

I agree , that,Tick, Tock, Tuckered is a vast improvement over the original Porky's Badtime Story. It's faster, and therefore, funnier. And the end gag with the alarm clock is far funnier than it was in the earlier version.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's likely. Remastering cartoons cost money, and some of the cartoons (like most of the Buddy ones that people don't care about) are in really bad shape. Also, some of these cartoons have some really outdated racial stereotypes, which makes a complete and uncensored collection unlikely, at least in the near future.

A few small notes. "Clean Pastures", the angel character in question that you find annoying was a caricature of Stepin Fetchit who was unfortunately known for depicting a stereotypical lazy black guy, but it also made him extremely famous at the time. He's been caricatured in quite a few of the Censored 11 shorts, in particular, "All This and Rabbit Stew." Also, not to condone "Jungle Jitters" as I too absolutely do not care for this short at all, but the salesman's voice is annoying because he's based on a popular radio show character at the time, Elmer Blurt. To be fair, I have noticed a pattern where if the character's voice is annoying, like say, Red Riding Hood from "Little Red Riding Rabbit" or Toots from "Quentin Quail", chances are, they're based off of a popular radio show character at the time.

With regard to "Now That Summer Is Gone," one of the standout elements for me is Mel Blanc's tour de force performance. Warners finally knew how best to deploy him. His version of the title tune is hilariously cynical. I also think his song from "With Plenty of Money and You," "With Plenty of Gravy on You," is a standout moment from that short. The need to work a musical number into every Merrie Melodies short can be annoying, but at least Blanc is a master at selling those songs.

28:24: I Want to Be a Sailor was one of the few cable-run Looney Tunes cartoons I saw as a kid in the early 1990s (before Cartoon Network became part of the basic cable package), and I still think it's funny in some parts. Having it as a four out of ten seems mean, but hey, it might not appeal to everyone. And, I'm sorry, Jungle Jitters gets a four. I thought it was reviled enough for a two or a one. Guess the white guilt and shame over outdated stereotypes isn't as strong as I thought. Though I'm glad someone gave "Sunday Go To Meetin' Time" a decent grade. Most who review the Looney Tunes cartoons (specifically the Censored Eleven) pretty much write this one off. And "Uncle Tom's Bungalow". 34:48: I like Now That Summer is Gone too, mostly because of childhood nostalgia, mostly because it looks like a Disney (or 1930s WB musical) spoof, and mostly because I love Frank Tashlin cartoons and feel they should get the same love as Jones, Avery, and Clampett (and, to a lesser extent, Freleng and McKimson, but Freleng and McKimson are on the same boat as Tashlin in terms of being vastly underrated).

It wasn't exactly my cup of tea either, but I do love the one bit where the mother parrot is recounting the day her drunken husband sailed for a certain island only for him to correct her through the flashback. It's definitely a Tex Avery touch.

A great idea for a series with good commentaries, but the rating system is laughably bad. How several hundred films can be rated but none get a 0, 1, or 2 out ten, is bizarre - as if turning out a cartoon merits a medal.
