The reason some of the cartoons contain Porky as a framing device or bit part is that the studio demanded a certain number of Porky cartoons, so cramming him into otherwise unrelated shorts was a case of malicious compliance on the director's part

@@thehickcritic I’d argue that the Draft Horse was what got Chuck Jones to catch up with the others; the Horse’s energy, the way he acts out what he’d do at the war, the Classic “Say Ah” gag; everything about it is what made Chuck Jones earn his place as an animation director, as he finally understood that laughter was the missing ingredient to his cartoon projects. I’m sure Fox Pop is a great cartoon as well, but Draft Horse is the most likely reason why Chuck upped his game.
@glowworm2 Жыл бұрын
@@robbiewalker2831 I agree here. I think even Chuck Jones himself admitted it in one of the documentaries on him. This short genuinely makes me laugh and there's some really good jokes in there, such as the "Say Ah" gag which is very memorable as well a joke where the horse is standing in midair and the Sargent has to remind him that he can't actually do that.
@robbiewalker2831Ай бұрын
@@glowworm2 I kinda wonder if that suspended gravity joke in that short was what inspired a scene in “Looney Tunes Back in Action”. In that movie, Bugs, Daffy, Damian Drake and Kate Houghton were falling from the sky in a spy car, only for it to stop a few inches away from crashing, with Bugs saying it’s out of gas (a clear reference to “Falling Hare”), but when Kate said that’s not how it works, it crashed anyway, with Bugs annoyed that she ruined the joke.

The Daffy Duckaroo looks so choppy because the version you saw is the colorized redrawn version. The cartoon is originally in black and white. Naturally it's not restored because of the native american stereotypes. But the animation is actually very good. Norm McCabe was actually very important in the evolution of Daffy. He was a good director even though he couldn't develop his own style because he was drafted soon after he took over. But he remained as one of the top animators in the studio.

I would be very surprised if these videos don't gain more of a following soon. I've never seen someone review all of the Looney Tunes shorts in order and I find it really interesting seeing the cartoons develop and mature over the years. It's a huge commitment to make something like this, the delivery is great, and the reviews are fair and compelling. This channel deserves a lot more recognition just for the sheer dedication.

@@thehickcritic About “Elmer’s Pet Rabbit”, I wouldn’t be surprised if Chuck Jones didn’t get the memo that they already perfected Ben Hardaway’s Rabbit character (Bugs was named after Hardaway) when presenting “A Wild Hare”; if anything, “Elmer’s Pet Rabbit” is a continuation of the “asshole rabbit” depiction used before in “Elmer’s Candid Camera”, since the Rabbit in “Elmer’s Pet Rabbit” was never mentioned by name outside of the opening credits, which feels more like a last minute addition due to “A Wild Hare” already being popular at the time. I also would like to note that the catchphrase “Of course you know, this means war” was already used back in “Porky’s Hare Hunt”, back when Bugs has yet to exist outside of proto-evolution. As for “Wabbit Twouble”, funny how the debut of “Big Chungus” would also be the debut of “Fat Elmer”; which is funny, because Bugs was mocking the redesign, yet ironically, everyone and their Grandmother (me included) would die laughing over a Rabbit morphing into a fat man.
@Scott898782 жыл бұрын
In this entire era, Bugs, Daffy, Porky, and Elmer were the dominant characters. As well as Sniffles too, I guess. I am really curious how they will work Tweety, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam, and Pepe Le Pew into the mix.

Correction: The slide for "The Unbearable Bear" contains a typo. It should be "blabbermouth mouse," not "blabbermouth mouth." It has also been brought to my attention, that the cartoon "The Daffy Duckaroo," should be in black and white, not color. The version I saw and showed on the screen was a redrawn and colorized version, which might explain why it looked so "choppy." I honestly don't know how I missed that.

I'm with you on "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs." If you want to watch one of the Censored 11 shorts out of curiosity, this is the best one of the bunch. Despite being obviously politically incorrect and a WWII short as well (That bit on Murder Incorporated's car stating that they'll rub out the Japanese for free is brutal regardless of the time period.) , the animation is fantastically fast and fluid, the voice work is great and the music is fantastic.

As slow as Elmer's Pet Rabbit was (among other early Jones shorts) I always got a laugh out of Bugs stuffing his face with vegetables and yelling "What do you think I am, a rabbit?!" "I'll starve eating this stuff!!", another vocal gem from Mel Blanc. Ken Harris had a way with animating a character going on a rant.

I wonder how this story would’ve turned out, if they kept Avery’s improvements, especially with the more familiar voice we would know today. This short felt too much like a sequel to an already bad short of a similar name: Elmer’s Candid Camera.

@@thehickcritic Actually, the “redrawn colorized” variants are from the 60s/70s, as the technology to colorize digitally didn’t exist yet. But if you want to watch “colorized” versions of b/w cartoons, I recommend the computerized method, rather than the “redrawn” versions. The computerized colorization is good if you’re not into b/w; just having an option between the two (and not the redrawn variants) is like having an option in Cuphead where you can play the game in b/w or color.

The main problem with the black hunter character in "All This and Rabbit Stew" is that it's a slow dimwitted blackface character design, using stereotypical minstrel dialect, while voiced by a white voice actor. (Previous members of the Censored Eleven like 'Clean Pastures' and 'Sunday Go to Meetin' Time' at least used black voice actors and thus were attempting to be celebrations rather than mockeries.) And the hunter's name in the marketing and production notes was literally "Sambo," which is arguably the most-offensive black stereotype, due to being used as a justification for slavery and segregation back then, and the consequences of which are still reverberating through the negative "lazy" stereotypes to this day.
@robbiewalker2831Ай бұрын
It’s one thing to have an actor of one ethnicity voicing another ethnicity or that the character is a stereotype, but when you’re portraying a character in a negative way, that’s going too far.

1:28: Fun fact: the official HBO Max (now just Max) summary for "Good Night Elmer" reads as follows: "Elmer Fudd makes a buffoon of himself when he tries to go to bed one night. He's so clumsy, that it's frustratingly painful to watch." That pretty much tells you that the Looney Tunes fandom doesn't care much for it. I think it's good as an experiment in light and shadow, but, like most of Chuck Jones's pre-1948 shorts, it's not very funny or interesting.

18:35: Is it wrong for me to say this is the only Sniffles short I like from the pre-Draft Horse era? Ironically, this is the debut of the actor who later replaced the original Sniffles voice in later shorts. The OG Sniffles had a good run, but I feel the later Sniffles shorts after this one would not feel right to me. Classic Sniffles could work similar to Porky, if given the right script, and I kinda felt that when Batty was present in this short. Honestly, the only short where I would accept the change in Sniffles would be in the one where he fathers a hawk, but only because he spoke when necessary, and that the story was more of the vocal point than the change in the character.
