Thank you to all of you who have watched these videos! You guys are awesome, and the overwhelming support I've gotten has been stunning! Thank you guys again! I have decided to devote part of my Part 10.5 video to answering any questions about this series, so if you have any for me to answer, leave them down below in a reply to this comment. I've been going over your requests for cartoons for me to take a look at. You guys went above and beyond the call of duty and I'm so grateful for that. There are quite a lot and obviously I won't be able to go over all of them, especially since some of these just boil down to a difference in personal taste. There are some that I knew people would want me to give a second look, and there are some that got overwhelming requests for that kind of surprised me. But yeah, 5 have definitely been selected from your requests to be given a second chance, 2 that I'm leaning towards but haven't decided yet. In order to keep Part 10.5 from ballooning out of control, I expect the maximum number of cartoons I give a second look to be probably 20 in total, and right now there are 14, so there are 6 more slots open. So if you still haven't posted any cartoons you think I was horribly wrong about in my opinion, you can still do that. Thank you guys once again! It's been a wild ride!

2:33: So through out the whole run that Pepe was in; it's not him who has a problem; It's people hating him who has a problem, by comparing him to Alex from a Clockwork Orange. 5:20: I'll admit, this cartoon definitely has an issue with how it's paced. If it were a SpongeBob cartoon (like when Squidward joins SpongeBob for a house party during a storm), the extra minutes would've helped add more gags; but seeing that those shorts back then were dropped from 9 minutes to 7-6 minutes, it wasted all the precious time of being humorous by overexplaining everything. At least with Chuck Jones, when he did Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, or Tom and Jerry, he let's the visuals do the talking, and that their character expressions can interpret anything the audience thinks they said. 5:48: Funny thing about this short, I heard that originally, the story would've ended with the titular "Martian" stay with beatniks in Greenwich Village... also, where the Martian is from is suppose to be Mars (most likely in a similar fashion as the Mars in "Hare-Way to the Stars"). 7:19: Funny thing about "Devil's Feud Cake", it became part of the "Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie", retitled as "Satan's Waitin" (yes, the same name as the Tweety Short), but there's a few differences between the short and the extended sketch: First of all, the shorts used in the LLLBBM version are mostly longer than in the DFC short. Second, rather than start with "Hare Lift", the LLLBBM version begins with "Hare Trimmed", which led to Sam being killed by Bugs on purpose with a Safe (compared to the original "Devil's Feud Cake", where Sam's death was his own fault for getting a backpack that wasn't a parachute). Later on in the LLLBBM version, Sam is given another chance after the Arab episode; by being a Cowboy again, which starts "Wild and Woolly Hare", which, after failing the final time, is where Sam decides Satan can get Bugs himself. 9:22: I love this short! Treg Brown's magnum opus! There's a "Sound ReDesign" version by Daphne Farazi, if you want to see the story with different sound effects. 10:10: The final Sam & Ralph short, and yeah, it is poetic; goes to show how much they've grown. It felt as if Ralph still has issues in the chase, but despite their shift, Sam would be there to help Ralph... the ending made it feel like they're past all that, and have matured since then. 10:49: I believe this short was probably intended to be viewed in "the Bugs Bunny Show", because they have a tendency to treat their stage as a vaudeville act. For example, at the start of "Bad Time Story", Bugs shows off cartoon logic and how it works, before he gets into the "Bewitched Bunny" short. Also, I bet this is where Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog got the idea of making Sonic and Robotnik act like Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote respectively. 11:51: Easily the best way to end Rocky and Mugsy's cartoon outing. 12:25: I actually enjoyed this when I was a kid; mostly because, what little I saw from it from the first time I saw the footage, it was in "How Bugs Bunny Won the West". 13:01: Remember when I said Chuck Jones knew the importance of pantomiming? Forget I said that. 13:32: Sylvester would later promote "9 Lives" cat food, after seeing him sing about "Pussy Kins Cat Food". 13:59: Actually, I take back what I said about the Mars Hare one; Jones definitely works best when he finds the right people to make good pacing. The atmosphere lets it all sink in, and allows to give us some good processing. 14:23, 23:56 27:26, : "The Adventures of the Road Runner" had the Catapult sketch use the Milt Franklyn score rather than the Bill Java score; I gotta say, the Bill Java version doesn't sound as cool as Milt's; I felt that a "Milt Franklyn" variant would've given "To Beep or Not to Beep" a 10/10. 15:27: The fact that Speedy would allow Sylvester to do this feels like a win for the both of them. 15:58: What your saying about the "character development" for the short? I think it reminds me of Tex Avery's "The Cat Who Hated People", in which the first half shows a cat who had a bad experience with people; can't get milk, can't serenade at the fence, kids tying paper bags on the cat's feet, the cat gets beaten up by a baby, scratching the sofa gets the cat punished, gets framed by Dog who beats the cat up, people keep forgetting to let the cat out, and ends up having their mating seasons cut short. The Cat decided to send himself to the Moon, so he can get peace and quiet; but then found out the Moon is full of "Lunacy" (rimshot), so the Cat decided to go back to Earth, and loved people since then. Don't know how a Dog hating wheels is any worse than that, if it's a similar story but with a different outcome. 17:05: Hooray for Tazboy! Started off good, ended off good; no wonder he's considered a major player in the Looney Lineup; I saw "Taz: The Quest for Burger", it's a cute story about Taz helping a young bandicoot girl rescue her father from a group of Dingos, and Taz being rewarded Veggie Burgers for a noble deed. After all, you can't fight on an empty stomach. 17:56: Yeah, even Bugs points out what he's referring to, adding "Invisible Shield, you know", after Daffy crashes into the Icy Wall. 25:20, 28:35, 29:03, 29:26, 33:28, 34:40, 35:43, 37:09, 38:04, 39:13, 40:52, 41:00, 41:15, 41:41, 42:42, 43:32, 44:09, 45:06, 45:22, 45:58, 46:38, 47:17, 48:47, 51:38, 52:43: To think the Daffy/Speedy Dynamic would later return in the 2012 Looney Tunes Show. Sidenote for "Daffy Rents": The Robot in that short ends up being the Final Boss for Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday for the SNES (and Daffy controls the Robot). 29:52: Wow, a Daffy cartoon where he suffers, and it's actually funny? Who would've thought? 30:46, 42:12: Seems that Bob McKimson does better with Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote than Rudy Larriva. 31:09, 32:13, 32:48, 33:56, 34:22, 35:07, 35:23, 36:13, 36:36, 37:38, 38:38: Case and Point. 39:39: Yeah, the reusing animation of Witch Hazel with Speedy's voice over it, and Daffy turning into the Duck Amuck creature for no reason other than Nostalgia, are very petty. 49:33: Cartoon Special indeed; now I feel like checking out that short. 53:59: Monty Python this ain't. 54:34: And people say Inky is a terrible character. 56:09: To think this would've been made into a series of shorts. 48:25: 49:18, 52:20, 55:46, 56:42: I guess it's a matter of a good concept with a bad execution. 54:56, 55:23: Imagine having a TV series with those guys. 47:56, 51:16, 52:01, 53:38, 57:09, 57:39: And I end my commentary by saying "Riddle me this: What Cool Cat is worse? A Cool Cat that tries to keep the audience interested (Looney Tunes), or a Cool Cat that insults the audience through bad advice (Derek Savage)?"

Some of these were okay, but i'm glad they bring back the older sound effects that they haven't used since the 40's like the sounds that were later used in Paramount Cartoons, and i do love the "No free pictures!" joke use it to block out a bad LT cartoon, but the 1967-1969 era is no good, they copied Hannah Barbera cartoons heck they even use the Hannah Barbera sound effects, come on WB if you want the LT shorts to be animated at Hannah Barbera, tell them before they died years later. And i do prefer Chuck E Cheese better than Merlin, but i'll give him credit since he was Chuck E Cheese prototype due to the design or color, And Cool Cat is just a rip-off of Snagglepuss and his other Pink friend, Pink Panther, the seven arts era is even worst than the 1933-1936 era of Looney Tunes.

Pity that Milt Franklyn's career had to end on such a lackluster note. As some other commenters may have pointed out, he actually died of a heart attack while composing the score for "The Jet Cage" and was replaced by the infamous Bill Lava. I believe the reason why Tweety sound different in "The Jet Cage" could be that Mel Blanc had a car accident, and was almost dead. So maybe some other voice actor did Tweety in this, during his recovering.
@glowworm2 Жыл бұрын
Nope, it was Mel Blanc all the way, just that it sounds a bit "off" due to him recovering from said accident. The same goes for his voices in "Devil's Feud Cake" where at times, Bugs almost sounds "bored." Yet, I think Daws Butler briefly took over voicing Barney for him in the Flintstones.

@@glowworm2Daws Butler actually did voice Barney Rubble on The Flintstones while Mel Blanc was in the hospital. Butler's Rubble sounds dopier than Blanc's Rubble. One issue with that is, where exactly do the Disney shorts end? Unlike the Looney Tunes, where they were still cranking them out regularly (if half- and quarter-assedly) until the bitter end, the original Disney shorts with Mickey, Donald, etc. just kinda petered out into a series of educational films like the psychedelic "Donald in Mathemagic Land" and "Goofy's Freeway Troubles", likely due to Walt getting embittered with animation after the 1941 animators strike followed by him getting distracted by TV projects and of course Disneyland. KaiserBeamz's "One Second from Every Classic Disney Short" ends with "It's Tough to Be a Bird" from 1969 (which of course was coincidentally also the last year of Looney Tunes).

The worst part about Muchos Locos besides the cheap redrawn/reused animation is that they don't even use the proper sound effects from the better, earlier shorts either. For "Tortilla Flaps", when El Vulturo finds a stick of dynamite under his foot instead of the mouse he was after, his screams are actually taken from the audio of "Robin Hood Daffy" when he's fighting with his quarterstaff on the bridge. You can clearly hear Daffy's voice going "Ho! Aha!" Also, this less than stellar short was released on my birth date. (Not the year, I'm not THAT old yet.)

One of the things I've noticed with a lot of the later Friz Freleng shorts is that most of the plots are retreads of his late '40s to mid '50s outings. What was really sad about is that he kept this retreading pattern well into the '70s. Look at The Pink Panther, The Inspector, heck even The Tijuana Toads shorts from that era, and you'll see what I mean.

I started watching a bunch of those Depating-Freleng shorts back in college and immediately noticed similar plots and gags from earlier Looney Tunes shorts. Then again, there were a lot of animators, story writers and directors from the Warner Bros studio working on these later shorts, so I really wasn't that surprised. Here's an interesting tidbit I found out involving the shorts from the Seven Arts era. A bunch of animation cels were discovered and bought at the William Hendricks (the executive producer of Warner Bros animation at the time) Estate sale that were basically sales pitches for some new series of shorts. Sadly, none of them made it off the drawing board due to the studios finally closing. Most were fairly run of the mill sounding ideas that had already been done to death before, such as "Toyland" where a bunch of toys in a store came to life after dark or "The Big Top" revolving around a circus. The most interesting bit though was that some characters, such as the Hatfields and the McCoys from "Feud with a Dude" , Lo the Poor Indian from "Hocus Pocus Pow-Wow" and Spooky from "Big Game Haunt" were supposed to get their own series of shorts. Even more interesting, a few one shot shorts, such as "Rabbit Stew and Rabbits Too". "Flying Circus" and "Chip and Zee" were originally intended as a series of shorts, albeit with different character names and designs.

And those are shorts I suggested getting a second look at.

I feel that the 2 out of ten for Tokio Jokio was because it's a wartime cartoon and a lot of the badness comes from being extremely dated. "Too nice" would be giving "Angel Puss" a 5 out of ten, despite the general consensus among Looney Tunes fans is that it's the worst Chuck Jones cartoon ever, but what's that make Good Night Elmer? Chopped liver? Do any of the Sniffles cartoons before Lost and Foundling and Hush My Mouse not count? People toss around "worst [whatever] ever so much, it's lost all meaning. I prefer to do what The Hick Critic does and judge each cartoon by its merits (or the childhood nostalgia bias for most of the 1950s shorts, because I remember seeing 95% of them on Saturday morning TV, the occasional weekday afternoon show, and, of course, Cartoon Network back when it aired Looney Tunes cartoons, as well as the Popeye shorts, Tom and Jerry cartoons from all three eras [Hanna/Barbera, Gene Dietch, and Chuck Jones], and the MGM shorts done by either Rudolf Ising or Tex Avery).
@dorothytheuyfanatic5118 Жыл бұрын
@@canaisyoung3601 Just because Tokio Jokio is historical, that does NOT excuse how bad it is. While the Censored Eleven are considered racist nowadays, they were accepted for their time, and the racism is not intentional since those shorts just have outdated social views. Tokio Jokio, on the other hand, is really disrespectful to Asian culture and has the intention of making fun of Asians, internationally racist if you know what I mean.

From what I understand the studio that was animating the 60s shorts didn’t have the rights to use most of the original cast for some (probably stupid) reason. That’s why there’s the Daffy VS Speedy dynamic was started.

Quoting Leonard Maltin in his "Of Mice and Magic" book from the 1980s, the Depatie-Freleng and Seven-Arts cartoons are "abysmal". Daffy Duck turned into a villainous shell of his former self, and the Road Runner cartoons by Rudy Larriva destroyed the mythology and "modus operandi" that Chuck Jones worked so long to establish. These cartoons were bad back then, and they still are now - tired and unfunny storytelling, cheap aesthetics, uninspired cohesion, and hardly much fun factor to be found. Quoting Jerry Beck, they're "lazy", "flat", "a disappointment", and "a bore". Having said all that, though, I do have a few good things to say about them. "Norman Normal" is a genuinely good cartoon. It may be cheap looking, but it makes up for that by being a character-driven story that relies on dry interactions and witty writing. When I heard it was picked as a potential nominee for the best animated short Oscar as the '60s were coming to an end, I said "rightfully so". Daffy Duck replacing Sylvester was at least contextualised; this may sound ordinary, but theatrical cartoon series' back in the '40s, '50s, and '60s rarely explained why a character was replacing another as a protagonist or antagonist, so the Daffy & Speedy cartoons were sort of innovative for at least trying to have some logic for a change in character. That doesn't make the cartoons good by any stretch, but I can't say it was jarring like Elmer Fudd suddenly having a different voice with no explanation. The theme song for the "Bunny & Claude" cartoons are very catchy and fun to listen to, and it's remarkable that the second short has a variation of it given the hideously low-budget. Overall, I think it's fair to say that "Looney Tunes" was "The Simpsons" of its time. In its prime, it created hundreds of some of the best cartoons to grace the planet; but, despite the people behind the scenes trying their best, it went on for too long and experienced severe quality degradation as a result. Though, at least it knew when to end - the low quantity of the "dark age" meant it didn't have a chance to substantially taint a beloved icon to such catastrophic levels, and some of the problems were at least due to factors out of the creators' control, making it understandable, even if it is rather depressing.

3:37 Oh, boy! This is the cartoon I kept metioning in my head, because, this cartoons after 2 minutes of Milt Franklin scores, the music turns into an electric minimalist and overall bombastic score. Why? Because Milt Franklin suddenly had a heat attack on April 24th, (the production of the cartoon) and after his death, they wanted to have some one to replace, not Stalling; because he retired in 1958. So they had to hire Bill Lava to finish it, meaning the music became more again, minimalist, bombastic, horrifying, and electric as heck. This would *not help* the budget cuts of the shorts, because the orchestra had to be decreased, meaning Lava had to work with pianos, electric guitars, xylophones and horns…? The same thing applies to the Depatie-Freleing era, and the Seven Arts era.

Awesome work! Thank you for reviewing all of them! The shorts animation is not bad...I did enjoy some of the shorts after 1964, but even as a kid, seeing that abstract opening was a sign that i wasn't going to get one of the best episodes...I like how the abundance of coyote and speedy episodes during those years gives that era a common theme with the southern, hot climate landscapes...A weird way to end with all those new characters... I was hoping that the new "looney tunes cartoons" would last like the original series, but it seems they cancelled it... WB can't stop making reboots and spinoff for looney tunes, scooby doo and tom and jerry...After those early years of WB and MGM fighting for the best shorts, i wonder how hanna and barbera felt about being part of warner bros. Animation in the 90s... And how they got along with the old looney tunes directors...

You did it, HC! What a journey! The two cartoons you gave a 1/10 definetely were not obvious choices! I respect that a lot! It's pretty sad how much Looney Tunes degraded, but at least the downfall has now been officially covered on KZbin! I salute you, Hick Critic! I look forward to the Worst to Best Ranking! I'd like to point out how interesting it is how Bob McKimson is the only director who got cartoons ranked either 1/10 or 10/10. Little Red Walking Hood deserve an 8/10. It's one of Tex Avery's funniest WB cartoons. Kitty Kornered was Bob Clampett's final Porky and only Sylvester cartoon and I'd give it 9/10. Bob clearly was in his prime during it's production! In terms of cartoons I think you should ranked differently, for better or worse, here are my suggestions: Higher: 1. Buddy's Show Boat (1933). This one is by far not on the same level of dread as Buddy's Day Out. Not in the slightest. It's fairly similar to a Bosko cartoon, but that was Buddy's purpose. And I think this cartoon is nice, albeight not very funny. The phone gag was both cute and funny. I'd rank this about 6/10. 2. Porky's Duck Hunt (1937). A true landmark of a cartoon and very, very funny! I think it deserves a 9/10, just for Daffy alone! WHat a great first impression both by him and Mel Blanc! 3. The Heckling Hare (1941). While the pacing is somewhat slow, the amount of dialogue is minimal and the ending is abrupt, I think it deserves a 9/10. Because it's still very funny. 4. The Wise Quacking Duck (1943). My favorite Daffy Duck AND Bob Clampett cartoon! Both Daffy and Bob were at their best here! It deserves a 10/10! 5. Daffy - the Commando (1943). My favorite Daffy cartoon directed by Friz Freleng! The sole fact that Daffy whacked Hitler in the head proes that "daffy" Daffy Duck is superior! It also deserves a 10/10! 6. Goldie Locks and the Jivin' Bears (1944). While it is a Censored 11 cartoon (and the very last one), it is surprisingly very funny and not that racist. I haven't seen it in a while, but I think it's worthy of a 8/10. 7. Fast and the Furry-Ous (1949). While you did gave this a high ranking (9/10), I think it deserves a 10/10 because of well this cartoon still holds up after 74 years! 8. A Fractured Leghorn (1950). Quite an underrated Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. His constant babbling and sheer hypocrisy makes this worthy of a 10/10! One of my favorite Bob McKimson cartoons! 9. Rabbit Stew and Rabbits Too! (1969). It may not be groundbreaking, but at least it feels like Bob McKimson was at least trying to make a funny cartoon. Also, I think it's weird how Bugs Bunny never had a fox antagonist when Daffy did, in 1948! I think it's worthy of a 7/10. Lower: 1. The Iceman Ducketh (1964). This is the worst Daffy Duck cartoon made by Warner Bros. Animation! I'm appalled by how Chuck Jones's team butchered Daffy's character. Chuck was fired very early in production of it, so he deserve some blame too. While the animation is better than the later ones (such as A-Haunting-We Will Go), the butchering of Daffy's character is worse than obvious low-budget animation and the obvious pandering. Bugs isn't funny either, making things worse. I actually thought Flying Circus (1968) was more mediocre than outright awful. This cartoon is awful. I think it deserves a 1/10. 2. Angel Puss (1944). The only Censored 11 directed by Chuck Jones and it's one of his worst cartoons. It seems he was deeply ashamed of it later on, as he and his daughter Linda refuse to speak of it. The story is so messed up that it would still suck even if there wasn't a Stepin Fetchit caricature and blatantly racist gags present. I'd give it a 2/10, only because of it's high production values. 3. Crazy Cruise (1942). For a cartoon Tex Avery started and Bob Clampett finished, it is suprisingly dull and unfunny. Neither Tex or Bob seems to have cared about this one. Tex did not leave WB on a high note. Bob obviously added the ending with Bugs and references to WWII. I'd give it a 2/10.

I agree with you on Rabbit Stew and Rabbits Too! I always liked that short as a kid and as an adult, it's probably one of the best of the Seven Arts shorts, which as a whole, is saying a lot as most of those shorts were clunkers. I also actually do think Goldie Locks and the Jivin' Bears deserved a higher rating as I initially saw it as trying too hard to mimic Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, but it's actually pretty funny next to that short on the Censored 11 list. I actually have a soft spot for Crazy Cruise though and actually thought it deserved a slightly higher rating. Loved a lot of those gags--especially the animals waiting at the watering spot, the mountain goat hopping from mountain to mountain and Bugs Bunny's cameo.

I think one short to reconsider is the coo coo nut groove. coo coo nut groove is the most meaningful caricture's short they ever did at the time. Treg Brown's sound effects wouldn't have been so great in the other iconic shorts if he didn't start with this one first all the way till 1964. This short has to be the most well looked visually in terms of color and picture before they regularly added techno-color to the shorts. The framework is also in terms of looney tune standards superb for almost the entire history they were at it.

You did give a pretty good rating but I do consider it one of my all-time favorites, but I get how the lack of plot might’ve been a turn-off. I was actually surprised by how high Crosby, Columbo, and Vallee was rated. It’s an okay cartoon, but it’s pretty bland and generic if you look past it’s potential subtext. The Blow Out is definitely a great cartoon and probably the best up to that point, but a lot of the later 8 and 9/10s from the 40’s-50’s are better than it in my personal opinion. Those are a few off the top of my head, so I’ll tell you if I can think of any more

Hey Hick Critic, as per usual there's some comments I would like to point out about these cartoons (though not nearly as much as before since there's not much to talk about and you pretty much covered all my thoughts perfectly for each of them). Did u know that during the production of the Jet Cage that Milt Franklin actually died while producing music for this cartoon? Milt died and then Bill Lava was actually sent over to replace his music work for the Jet Cage and all the rest of the Looney Tunes cartoons (in the classic era). The Million Box gag was actually funny and the cartoon as a whole was a nice mix in the formula for the late Daffy and Bugs dynamics at least imo. The final Rocky and Mugsy cartoon was actually a surprisingly good send-off for these characters and that ending gag was unexpectedly gold. The delayed bullet explosion gag and the truck gag in Hare Breath Hurry was sparks of comedic genius in an otherwise mediocre cartoon. Fast Buck Duck and Claws In The Lease were far more comedically timed and funny than they had any right to be especially for their time period. The baseball bat and the bat in glasses gags were hysterical and were greatly timed and set up. The Catapult gags is THE BEST RUNNING GAG in all of the Wile.E Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons period, had me dying in laughter the first time I saw it. If only Friz Frieling actually cared about making his Speedy and Roadrunner team up cartoon any good or at the very least introduced some new gags into the mix, and to make things worse it doesn't even tell you who won the race. The closest thing we'd ever gotten to the premise of the cartoon "Boulder Wham" was the first few gags in the 1958 cartoon "Whoa Be Gone" of which the Coyote kept repeating falling off cliffs to the same exact landing area. If only the cartoons "Chaser On The Rocks", and "The Solid Tin Coyote" were directed by Chuck Jones or even Robert Mc.kimson (most especially the ladder cartoon). Also the same excat question you had about why didn't the Coyote just eat the birds he used in trying to catch the Roadrunner could be said in that one cartoon of which Sylvester attempted to use a bird to catch Speedy. Even though the cartoon "Sugar and Spies" breaks the rule of the coyote ordering something other than the ACME cooperation to try and catch the Roadrunner, at the very least it was innovative enough for me to forgive it, so much so that i think you should've ranked the cartoon one or two ratings higher than what you've given it. Daffy Duck in the cartoon "A Taste Of Catnip" reminds me alot of Claude Cat's personality (especially when he was paired with Hubie and Bertie) more than anything else. The cartoon "Rabbit Stew And Rabbits Too" was actually alot funnier than I expected to be on my first watch...for a while (I watched the cartoon when i was younger but I thought I had imagined it due to how hard it was for me to find it until a couple months ago when they still had it on HBO MAX now called MAX). I'm sorry, but I absolutely REFUSE to believe there's another character in the classic Looney Tunes era named Claude besides my favorite little mentally challenged and Neurotic cat even if it's for a parody of Bonnie and Clyde. While I still do HATE Cool Cat (The Seven Arts' Cool Cat) The ending bit in "Bugged By A Bee" of which the announcer declares that the bee is the trophy winner and not Cool Cat was at the very least somewhat amusing to me and I did chuckle a bit at that. The Cartoon Injun Trouble (1969) is the embodiment of all the reasons why I absolutely DISPISE Cool Cat and more: The cartoon had the gall to reuse the exact same title as a far superior much funnier and better animated Looney Tune cartoon from a director who was still in his prime all the way back in 1938; The cartoon stars one of the most one dimensional, Unfunny, and one of the sleeziest excuses for a cartoon character I've ever seen; To call the cartoon Racist would be saying the cartoon did something... I don't even know how to describe, and out of ALL the ways to end this long running series of classic cartoon shorts, THIS IS HOW THEY DECIDED TO END IT?!? Imo, Cool Cat had absolutely NO right making as many cameos as he did in "Sylvester And Tweety Mysteries" and everything I said about this cartoon really helps me support my claim for that.
@evelyngomez9944 Жыл бұрын
And as for cartoons that I think you were too harsh on: "Mouse Warming" (1952) because I liked the border joke and the end bit of Claude getting tricked by the mice into playing Canasta with the bulldog and getting absolutely destroyed by him. "The Rattled Rooster" (1948) Not one of Davis' best cartoons sure, but I think it wasn't as bad as you proclaimed it to be; the absolute sheer speed of the first gag floored me on my first watch, and the French bit, the drowning bit, and the end bits with the rattlesnake were all good too imo (although I do still have to deduct points for the re-used animation for the same exact gag even though I thought it was also kind of comedically sadistic towards the rooster). "A Ham In A Role" (1949) The Review of the cartoon done by the KZbinr Anthony's Animation Talk perfectly describes why I think you were too harsh with the cartoon. "The Unruly Hare" (1945) Even though you gave that cartoon around a 9, I still think that it deserved a 10; it felt like something Clampett would've made more than Tashlin not that I think he wasn't capable of doing so but still. "Fox Pop" (1942) I think for one of Chuck Jones' pre-dover boys shorts it actually comes alot more closer to home than most others may initially think at first; The joke about the fox escaping through the prison bars only to come back to get the key to open the cell door was really funny, and I also do love the end bit of the dogs absolutely beating the ever living stuffing out of the fox at such a quick speed. "Caveman Inki" (1950) I liked the running gag of the guy getting his tomato soup completely tarnished by the surrounding characters (even when inside a dinosaur's stomach, somehow) I like the fact that somehow the Mynah bird was able to completely able to tie up an animal MUCH bigger than him and we don't even get to see how, and for what it's worth, for Inki's last cartoon it could've been alot worse. "House Hunting Mice" (1947) For a solo Hubie and Bertie short, it's not bad, and for a remake of an older short it's definitely a lot more fast paced and the jokes are alot more hard hitting and clever imo (although I do have to deduct points from it again for not including Claude or another cat for them to go against, possibly maybe having it be to one to control the robot chasing the mice would've been a nice twist at least imo). "What Makes Daffy Duck" (1948) I felt like you could've given the cartoon a bit of a higher rating because it's probably the last time that we'd get to see Daffy at his truly screwball self. "Mexican Joyride" (1947) Deserves a 10 imo, nuff said. "Mouse Wreckers" While your reasoning of why u gave the cartoon the rating that you gave it is understandable; it stars a dynamic of one of my favorite pairs of Characters together (Hubie, Bertie, and Claude Cat), considering that you gave a similar cartoon in execution "Canned Fued" (1951) a 9/10, and the fact that it's their ONLY Oscar nomination, I think the cartoon at the very least deserves a 7/10 rating. "Dog Collared" (1950) Deserves a 10 for feeling like another long lost Clampett short similar to Rebel Rabbit. "Sugar and Spies" (1965) I pretty much explained why in my comment about the short above all this. "A Fractured Leghorn" (1950) One of the rare Foghorn shorts that doesn't feature ANY of it's main characters and instead for an old school classic rivalry chase cartoon with one of the most underrated MC.Kimson characters. "Two Gophers From Texas" (1948) Deserves a 10, period. "Oder Of The Day" (1948) By far the most unique Pepe Le Pew cartoon, and probably also one of his funniest, as I said before for both Rebel Rabbit and Dog Collared, it kinda feels like a long lost Clampett cartoon but with an Art Davis spin attached to it, deserves at least an 8 or 9 imo. And finally, "Rabbits Stew and Rabbits Too" (1969) Sure it may be a Wile.E Coyote and Roadrunner ripoff short, but at least it's a good ripoff short; it follows a couple of chuckleworthy gags, and is a nice breath of fresh air from all of those that came before and after it. Deserves at least a 7 imo. I know that you're probably not even gonna see this comment, let alone pick any of them for a re-review, but I guess it was worth a shot, anyways have a great day, and you may also wish to take a little break before you re-review some of the cartoons of the classic era of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.

I need to be honest, I actually like "A Haunting We Will Go" and "Flying Circus"." Mind you, I still think "A Haunting We Will Go" is an absolute train wreck, with recycled animation from far better shorts, such a "Broomstick Bunny" and "Duck Amuck" but at least it had Witch Hazel in it, and all Daffy and Speedy interaction is when Speedy is taking over for the Witch while she's gone. It's just so utterly bizarre to watch (especially Speedy rehashing some scenes from "Broomstick Bunny" with Daffy as Witch Hazel) that I like watching it as a VERY guilty pleasure--usually around October for Halloween. It's basically "The Room" of Looney Tunes shorts for me. So bad, it's "good". As for "Flying Circus", I actually never saw this one as a kid on Nickelodeon but did see it when I was in college on the internet. It's also not a great short, but if anything, the characters remind me of a poor man's Roland and Rattfink, a lesser known DePatie-Freleng series of shorts. Amusingly enough though, Roland and Rattfink's own take on WWI fighter planes "Hawks and Doves" wouldn't come out for at least 3 more months. Also, I actually enjoy "Chip and Zee". While not a great short, Mel Blanc voicing the kooky hunter in a voice similar to Wile E. Coyote's is pretty funny and the Bill Lava music is surprisingly catchy. (I am not a big fan of Lava's music but it's somewhat better when he's composing for non-traditional Looney Tunes shorts, such as Cool Cat or Bunny and Claude.) I also really love "Rabbit Stew and Rabbits Too." At least the short features some pretty amusing gags and Rapid Rabbit is pretty cute even if he does look a lot like the Nesquik Bunny. Also, the restoration of that short is really nice looking. When I was a kid, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network had a really murky reddish brown print of it. I also really liked the Bunny and Claude shorts as a kid and still have a soft spot for them. Say what you will about them, they did have a really catchy theme song.

Goodnight Elmer bored me as a child. I mean Elmer is being outsmarted by a CANDLE in this short. I know Elmer wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box, but when an inanimate can defeat you, that's just sad. Also, it's insanely slow, a problem that often occurred with Jones' early shorts. The Three Stooges often had losing battles with inanimate objects but at least those were pretty quickly paced and they knew when to end the gag before it lost the audience's interest. It's a shame that Chuck Jones got fired after making the Gay Purree movie and these shorts got worse and worse but a few good ones stood out.
@fictionalmediabully9830 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think even if Chuck Jones stuck around, the pitifully low budgets would have restrained his creativity. I learned that he only agreed to make "Tom and Jerry" cartoons if MGM allowed him to continue with "full animation". Reportedly, the budget he was given for each short was $12,000 more than the $30,000 Warner Bros. was currently giving him.

I see "Aqua Duck" as more of a psychological drama about where Daffy's personality is at and which way it should lean: the wacky Daffy or the greedy jerk villain Daffy. Judging by the ending, the greedy jerk won. I know McKimson didn't mean for it to be like that, but given how barebones the cartoon is, I prefer to interpret it as such. And Louvre Come Back to Me getting a 6 out of 10 feels more deserved than The Cats Bah getting the same rating. The Cats Bah proves my theory that the prettier a Pepe Le Pew cartoon looks, the more disturbing its sexual undertones are (Wild Over You does too, but The Cats Bah makes better use of using scale and proportion to show the horrors of being trapped in a foreign country with someone after you). EDIT: After seeing the video where you reassess your ratings for the shorts, I'm going to have to rescind my statement about The Cats Bah not deserving a 6/10 (since it lost a point due to being creepy by today's standards). Louvre Come Back to Me is still a solid six because I, too, felt like more could have been done with the male cat going after Pepe for stealing his girlfriend.

here's my other half on this first, i honestly never expected “a haunting we will go” to be the first ever 1/10 in this mega-review. but i can see why. the pointless speedy cameo, the gags feeling stiff, and the fact that the animation studio had the sack to include not 1, but two gags from duck amuck, a cartoon by a director that the wb fired for breach of contract, and they even panned out the one with daffy not quite feeling like himself. second, so what you’re basically saying is, injun trouble (1969) is seth macfarlane’s cavalcade of cartoon comedy (which feel like rejected family guy cutaways), but with peter griffin self-inserted into each and every single cutaway in that cavalcade, as if he didn’t stand out already, JUST by being peter griffin? that’s the best way i would sum it up as. third, every time i look at the abstract wb logo, i always imagine myself saying “i’ve seen a better usage of two triangles and a circle in valerian high, and that has a reason for it’s under animation. because it's the first time we've seen these characters in animation form, and the creator is finding their place.”

Angel Puss imo deserves a lower rating not just because of its reputation, but because of concept not even being that clever. The only kinda unique detail has to be that the cat is seeking revenge when the dirty deed wasn't actually done. The animation is just mediocre to me at least. It also doesn't have enough time to play out that much and just boils to routines and jokes we are used to seeing before this short even came out.

Honestly The Million Hare is kid of funny. The Unmentionbles is not a bad cartoon. Mad as a Mars Hare is my favorite Marvin the Martian cartoon ever. The Wild Chase was a really good idea the only problem is that Selvester didn't talk for some reason. Also thanks for all of these parts it was awsome.🐻🧸

Huh, I used to think the reason these later cartoons pitted Daffy against Speedy, because De Patie-Freleng didn't have the rights to Sylvester, but he does pop up in A Taste of Catnip... odd. I don't feel like the cartoons you gave a 1 here actually deserve a 1. Sure they're boring and cheap, but that's the case for all the 60s cartoons, so I don't quite see what made them worse than the 2s in the batch - Although the reuse of the Duck Amuck creature was a cheap shot for sure, so I kind of understand the rating for A Haunting We Will Go - but not for Flying Circus. At the very least if you give these two a 1, Going to Heaven On A Mule deserves one too. For cartoons that deserve higher ratings, I Love to Singa deserves a second chance. And on a more personal note I was quite disappointed with your low score on Detouring America, although I can see how some would find it boring compared to a classic like Cross Country Detours

Well, this has been one hell of a series. I've watched and enjoyed every episode, and I have to pay my respects for you not only completing such a massive project, but maintaining such a level of quality throughout. It's been magnificent. While there are a fair few cartoons I don't agree with you on, often massively so (the most extreme example being "Fresh Airedale", which I would give a 0/10 to...) it's all just personal opinion, and I do tend to have a slightly weird taste in cartoons (for example, I'm one of the extremely few people who doesn't particularly like "One Froggy Evening", and yet I DO like "Snow Excuse". Go figure.). There are only 2 cartoons out of all 1,003 that I honestly think you should take another look at, and one of those is "The Scarlet Pumpernickel", which with how many times that one has been brought up, I don't think I even need to elaborate further. The other is "Hillbilly Hare". The ending bit with Bugs' square dance song is one of the most legendary and hilarious Looney Tunes scenes of all time, and your review didn't even acknowledge it. This is honestly the only one of your 1,003 reviews where I genuinely felt like you completely missed something out, and is the one cartoon I truly hope you revisit in Part 10.5. Aside from those two minor nitpicks, this has been an amazing series, and I really look forward to Part 10.5, the final rating, and whatever series of cartoon reviews you go onto next.

Fresh Airdale of all cartoons getting a 0/10 feels wrong in so many ways, so I'm mordibly curious as to _why_ you would rank it soooo low.
@thegreatluigi Жыл бұрын
@@extrahistory8956 I'm gonna be honest here, half the reason I'd give it a 0/10 is unfair personal bias. Basically, I absolutely adore cats, and, as highly controversial as this is, I'm not fond of dogs. So, naturally, I don't find a cartoon devoted to a kindly cat being abused whilst an evil dog gets showered with love particularly enjoyable. I mean, I do understand that it's supposed to be a deconstruction of the whole "Dogs are heroes, Cats are villains" trope, but that alone doesn't make the cartoon any less unpleasant to sit through, especially since the cartoon is basically just exaggerating the trope instead of parodying it in any way. Even putting aside my massive bias, I honestly fail to see how the cartoon is entertaining. The whole thing is cruel and unpleasant, with almost no jokes at all in it (even The Hick Critic himself said it isn't particularly funny), it isn't artistic or interesting in any way, and even taking it as a drama rather than a comedy, I still can't find it in any way engaging. I mean, I get it's supposed to be a "hard truths" cartoon (for lack of a better phrase), but I don't really ENJOY being reminded of how unfair life can be. And If I DID want a cold reminder of the injustices of life, I probably wouldn't be watching Looney Tunes... Finally, this is probably irrelevant, but I'd like to quickly compare this cartoon with a similar cartoon that I love: "Chow Hound". Now, the ONE thing that really made "Chow Hound" such a classic is that magnificent payoff at the end. "Fresh Airedale" is essentially "Chow Hound" without the sole thing that made the "Chow Hound" so magnificent. I feel like if "Chow Hound" just ended with the dog happily buying the butcher shop and dancing in victory, it wouldn't be regarded as a particularly good cartoon. So, why is Fresh Airedale so different? For all my ranting about "Fresh Airedale", it is still just personal opinion, and I do understand why the vast majority of people like the cartoon (though I do think giving it a 10/10 was a smidge over the top...). And, I am the first to admit, my opinion on cartoons is rather unusual at times... Anyway, I hope I managed to provide some explanation for my 0/10, and I hope my inane ramblings here weren't too painful to read through. TL/DR: I'm a heavily biased cat lover, and even putting that aside, I just find the cartoon to be completely cruel and unpleasant, with no redeeming qualities.
@glowworm2 Жыл бұрын
@@thegreatluigi I'm the same way about Fresh Airdale. It's one of those shorts you either love or hate for the same reason: it's a dark cynical take on "man's best friend". The problem for me is that I saw part of this short when I had just finished second grade and was starting summer vacation. I had only gotten up to the part where Shep takes credit for attacking a burglar when I begged my father to turn it off. I had seen enough of this short and felt extremely sorry for the cat. It wasn't until I was in high school age that I finally saw the short all the way through--hoping that maybe there would be some closure and comeuppance for Shep and some mercy for the cat. Nope. Shep got away with everything and I still absolutely dislike this short for that very reason. Oddly enough, I'm also probably one of the very few who isn't very fond of "Chow Hound" either, even though the cat and mouse get their revenge on the dog. I think it's because I was grossed out by the ending as a young child. Yet, it's also funny, because while I felt sorry for the cat in "Fresh Airdale" and "Chow Hound", I really love "Canned Feud" and "Snow Business" where a mouse is really giving Sylvester hell. It's just really funny to watch Sylvester realize that his tail has been placed inside a toaster to me!
