@@madmanonyt9943 it’s a good movie, but saying it “obliterates” your name is wild lol. They’re both masterpieces, and honestly it’s all up to preference. Sound track and visuals are your name by a landslide. Character development and growth you can argue is a silent voice fs tho. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but they’re both amazing movies
@madmanonyt99433 ай бұрын
@@EthanMcGeek I just feel like Your Name’s appeal is solely superficial. There are an unbelievable amount of plot holes and messy character writing that would make the film completely unenjoyable, if it wasn’t for its phenomenal visuals and soundtrack, while A Silent Voice nails the basic fundamentals of writing found in its plot and characters, as the story is one that’s very grounded, yet emotional striking due to how real it feels. It’s a film about forgiveness and the importance of communication, as learning how to connect with others will allow you to understand yourself and the world around you in a deeper level, paving the way to finding true happiness in the people that care about you. Multiple moments in the film, including Shouko’s suicide attempt and the heart-dropping finale never fail to get me worked up, and I am not one for getting emotional during movies, and that’s because despite not having the fanciest animation or visual effects, it focuses its time resources on telling a human story that resonates on a level that anyone could connect with. Your Name is not bad, at all, but it focuses more on the flashiness and surface-level impact moments, opposed to deep and complex themes that’ll stick with the viewers long after the credits roll.

Nooooooooooo. 5cm/sec coming in 2nd. Damn it. I was rooting for it to be 1st. I love this movie so much. Personally in terms of depth it's better than Your Name but loses a bit to visuals. I made the mistake of watching 5cm/sec after my 1st break up in a serious relationship and I was coping well. I had accepted the facts, analyzed the goods the bads. And I saw this movie and boom it hit me like a truck and I went into depression for 3 days. Back in 2019 I met Shinkai Makoto brief moment before the premiere of Your Name in New Delhi and I told him that 5cm/sec was probably one of the best movies I will never watch again. He laughed and said glad you loved it. Edit : you are absolutely right about 5cm/sec making your Names ending better. All my friends who watched 5cm/sec were edge of their seats in the end. We were all like " don't you dare pull another 5cm/seconds on us." Also, 10/10 for your take on Garden of words.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices does look like it followed too closely to Miyazaki in terms of thematic and fantasy elements as shown in several Studio Ghibli projects, but Shinkai's follow-up The Garden of Words started to show he can assemble a film that's all him and proving he does not pale in comparison to Miyazaki. (3:35) I saw that short film! Crossroads? Felt like it potentially can be a full-length feature rather than just being used for a TV ad. There's so much that can be done for that one.

A VERY GOOD LIST I would say! I feel like I'd personally change the order of the first five entries, but probably not too much and as you said, all of it is subjective. Having brought that up... I could not agree with you more on having 5 Centimeters Per Second and Your Name where they are in the top two slots! Those are not only my favorite films from Shinkai but a pair of my favorite films, period. I actually experienced the former for the first time in 2016 which was my introduction to Shinkai, and then a few months later... Well, that was an experience in it of itself. Everyone was telling me that it was phenomenal and I thought to myself that it couldn't live up to the hype, but somehow it exceeded it. 2016 was an interesting year, but my introduction to such an incredible filmmaker this way was definitely one of the highlights! I hope he keeps making movies for a VERY LONG time!

My problem with the people who hated the ending of Weathering with You for the mc's choice is I'm honestly baffled people would take that stance and I think morally it's disgusting. Good to know that people will gladly sacrifice a 15-year-old girl who's digging her own grave all for the sake of their own comfort. As far as we know in the film there isn't anything that suggests someone else died from the weather change and even then that's not something a lone individual should have to carry the weight of such a burden over as she herself did in selflessly doing. A theme of the movie I got from it was also as a result that you need to take care of yourself or rather hell be a little selfish yourself too so that you can still even be there for the people that love and or need you as being so selfless to the point it comes at your own expense isn't a good thing. As for what you took issue in with the mc's backstory for why he left and the story not showing us why, while I understand I actually like in this case that it was ambiguous it could be left to interpretation that he just had 1 very bad day, was fed up entirely over how stagnant his life has been up until now or that his parents are for all we know neglectful. Either way what we know is that whatever it was he had enough that it drove him to want to get away from it all and to want to chase the light over to Tokyo as being a sign for whatever changed he would find there and that he wanted to keep away from police finding him and taking him back to the place where he made the decision to not want to be part of no longer. Personally for me I enjoyed the film better over Your Name which did little to no explaining for the fantastical elements in it and I just didn't buy the romance it felt too undeveloped and just wasn't memorable for me that I genuinely do not get the praise.

Warning: major "That Guy" energy incoming The thing that makes me dislike Weathering With You is that it can easily and very reasonably be interpreted as climate change denial propaganda. I know that Shinkai has gone on record saying that that isn't the point of the film and that he does believe that climate change is being driven by human activity, but IMO the ways WWY allude to climate change are clumsy enough that I think it represents a failure on Shinkai's part to adequately convey what he was trying to go for rather than media illiteracy on the part of the audience that enough people interpreted the film the way I did that he ended up needing to clarify his intentions with the film. The very blatant fast food product placement is the cherry on top for me given that issue.

this may be recency bias because i watched suzume literally two days ago, but i prefer suzume to your name. mostly because of the pacing. i think shinkai did a better job with pacing the story and introducing the world-ending plot early on, as even though in your name we get hints of it, it kind of feels like the comet destroying itomori came out of nowhere. neither movies did well with romance tbh, i just think that shinkai is better at writing human connection than he is at writing romance (the way the two main characters in your name form friendship with the people around them, the way the characters in garden of words connect with each other because they both feel alienated, the way suzume finds friends while "running away from home" and reconnect with her aunt, so on and so forth). but with suzume especially, i feel like i can connect with the characters better, and the way shinkai wrote how gates open through abandoned places just really resonate for some reason. your name has a lot of strengths and is a truly beautiful film, but i find suzume to be a better-rounded film.

I would have placed Garden of Words higher. To second place at least. I totally understand why people are so into the 5 Centimeters per Second movie, as it was Shinkai's first really big hit in the anime market, which was working on a theme that a lot of people can identify with more directly. However, Shinkai's illustration of koi in Garden of Words, I think, presents the root of a theme in a much more unique context and situation in a way not seen before, which is such a beautiful unity of visual symbolism and the play of sounds that even Your Name didn't manage to replicate. The environmental elements and sounds not only serve as emotional dopamines in the film, they are also main characters.

I liked Suzume better than Your Name. Because in Suzume at least the main characters have a story prior to falling in love. In your name they live each other's lives without really meeting. And the relationship feels more like friendship if not just a pair of strangers trying to save the village. I did not pick up on any romance building throughout the majority of the movie and was sooo taken aback when I saw that he wrote "I love you" instead of his name. I don't know if explained myself well, but I just think the level of their relationship in the end didn't make sense

I'd bump up Garden of Words and Weathering With You on the list. I agree that Your Name is #1 but Suzume felt like something was off for me. I liked a lot of things about it (visuals as always were very pretty) but was Souta really a university student? Was the guy with the sports car really his friend that he owed $200 to? (You don't see them interact in the film in a flashback or after Souta turns back human). I left the theater with sensory overload from the brightness of the colours of the film (something I didn't get from the other Shinkai films). I'll give it another viewing probably when it comes out for rental on KZbin. Garden of Words is something I feel really nostalgic about and want to rewatch. I think it's a film that may not have the same initial staying power of the other films because that's something that grows with multiple viewings. There needs to be some reciprocation from me that involves spending some time with it. And Weathering With You was bittersweet. I loved that the plot wasn't afraid of leaving the audience feeling torn. It's interesting how having a flawed or weak character brings about some hate for a film but I think it's mostly because of the expectations people have for a certain genre? I am a critic of characters that aren't fleshed out when they should be unless the purpose of the film is supposed to be mysterious about the character and it's done intentionally. Not left out because of something like time constraints or production changes like "we need more action sequences". I would have loved to see Shinkai's original idea for Suzume come to life.

Personally I think that when shinkai strays too far from reality e.g children who chase lost voices and suzume it loses what makes shinkai films special, I don't think the films benefit from the climax being to fight some end villian. Something about those 2 just didn't hit me as much as the true reality of 5cm per second and garden of words, your name and weathering with you are also great movies imo as the supernatural element helps the story progress rather than it being the entire focus. Was very disappointed with suzume as I thought shinkai would learn from children who chase lost voices that simply true realistic and emotional stories hit much harder.

Your Name is good, but I feel that it’s severely overrated. The characters feel very underdeveloped, with Taki, in particular being painfully boring, the lack of an attempt to explain exactly why all of this is happening aside from the corny ahhh “fate brings us together”nonsense the film tries to use as an actual reason, the movie provides no real pivotal scene showing where they fell in love, despite never even actually interacting until the very end of the movie, and the mischaracterization of Taki and Mitsuha, once they switch bodies, emphasizing the feminine and masculine traits that aren’t present when they’re in their normal bodies, as seen with how Taki is fairly level-headed, in his own body, while in Mitsuha’s body, he’s strangely violent and is a complete dick, while Mitsuha, while not to nearly as bad of an extent, is overly whiny and simple-minded, when in Taki’s body, which simply enforces negative gender stereotypes, and which overall points out just how poorly written Your Name, in reality, actually is. Honestly, in a similar vein as Demon Slayer, of the animation and music wasn’t as incredible as it was, nobody would care about Your Name, in the slightest, as those aspects cause people to overwhelmingly glaze every other aspect of this movie, which is ridiculous, and it did not deserve to make as much money as Spirited Away, which is a great film all-around, and it in no way deserves to completely overshadow A Silent Voice, which is an infinitely more powerful and resonant film with something far more important to say, and is just more enjoyable, overall.
