Suzume doesn’t count as a full-fledged romance at all. If anything, it’s merely 25% of the film and the remaining 75% is fantasy drama.

Having only seen Your Name, which I loved, you've definitely got me interested to see 5 Centimetres per Second now (seemed like it was your second favourite?). Interesting that his first film, Voices of a Distant Star, seems like an Evangelion homage or something.

Voices very much feels like a movie made by someone who really likes Evangelion, especially when the aliens in the movie attempt to communicate with humans. I think 5 Centimeters per Second is worth a watch and it definitely is my second favorite of the bunch so far.

I'm probably tad bit too late but paused this video to write about my experience with five centimeters per second - which is very personal as like Takaki I too have moved a lot in my childhood and this movie captures a lot of things I felt back then and even now, so much so I remember crying for what felt like hours (watching it alone in a darkened room didn't help ig) - it was my favourite Shinkai movie that was until Suzume came along. It has great characters, amazing animations, good plot and a theme which allows room for dialogues and discussion. I just love it.

5cm wouldn’t be something I would see now but it was really significant when I had a huge crush on someone in my youth. The long distance with that person made me connect with the film because of how heartbroken I felt that I might never see that person again. Definitely it’s meant to make you feel time feels so long when you miss someone.

I just watched Suzume and, while searching for reviews about it, I stumbled upon your channel and I loved your videos about Shinkai. They are some of the best analysis of his work I've found here on youtube. Can't wait for your Suzume video!

I think he is sort of making the same movies, in the sense that he reuses the themes (and imagery) from voices of a distant star. I do think it's good because he's developed his ideas from his short film into longer more fleshed out ones, which mostly turned out great. But for me the decline came after your name, haven't watched suzume but I heard its pretty generic in terms of its storytelling, most likely to suit the general audience. I hold 5cm per second in pretty high regard, its the quiet emotions of not being able to move on and the longing for the someone or something that resonates with me greatly. The realism of the matter makes it so...breathtaking? No idea how to describe it but I get the same feelings when watching shows like All quiet on the western front and Koe no katachi. edit: I think at the end of most Shinkai films, he tries to show that the characters move on towards the future, but I kinda like when the tone is sadder rather than happier.

Since watching 5 centimeters per second in 2009, I loved the movie for its art and contemplative tone. Though I am happy that Shinkai has started making films with happier endings (I was completely surprised by the ending of Your Name), 5 centimeters is still one of my favorite movies. I just need to replace my old dvd with a blu ray.

@@TrackingShots So just a basic run down Light novel first part is a pov of Akari( instead of takaki) 2nd part is the pov of Takaki(instead of Kanae) final part is from Both Akari and Takakai. Manga changes and seems like the middle part of both the movie and light novel . But i really liked the ending for Both LN and Manga .

for me, i didnt particularly like your name as much as it is acclaimed for. the garden of words and 4 centimeter per second are a different story though. out of all the anime movies and series i have watched 5 centimeter per second i liked the best. i would also like to mention. that this movie i couldnt finish it one sitting.i watched it for half an hour ,got bored, and well decided that it wasnt worth it, but after reading a book (the remains of the day by kazuo ishiguro).my prespective drastically changed. the focus on the little things, especially the tragidy of them , idk, isnt that what the word 'beauty' stands for

The same question have also aroused in my head. But I think in stead of choosing diverse story he just focuses on one specific point which is romance/fantasy and also you can't say he only make fantasy or romantic movie but he made adventure and scifi movies too(for example: Children who chase lost voices and voices of distant stars) You can say that the theme of those romantic movies are quiet similar(a story about two distant teens) But no one can can deny that his story's are normal or common. But i think he have got a god blessed talent. Even Hollywood movie makers cant even cling to his his stage of excellency of story telling and visualisation.

actually, different that other I like the way they are similar an din the same universe. I first watched your name(kimi no na wa) then one youtuber said if yo liked your name it seems you are going to mostly like weathering with you(tenki no ko) then I realised that that is What I want. same structure(because I like it) different stories in the same universe. The thing that I mostly want Makoto Shinkai to di is giving information about previous stories like garden of the words, 5 centimetres per second what happened to Kanae or Takaki, rain did not stopped but then? So lastly I want to say that he should continue stories as little scenes from new animes maybe in flavour of youth or something. All Makoto Shinkai animes are living inside of my brain, shape my dreams, and force me to allocate time to thing about, even if they are not that good like the place promised in our early days. Loved your opinion, I hope I will be able to watch suzume. my Makoto Shinkar list 1)Your Name 2)Weathering With You 3)5 Centimetres Per Second --Makoto Shinkai's masterpieces-- 4)Garden Of The Words 5)Flavors of Youth 6)The Place Promised In Our Early Days 7)Voices Of A Distant Star I watched Children Who Chase Lost Voices but cold not include the list probably because of the type, mostly It would be 5th. I have not watched other ones.

I watched 5 centimeters per second with my husband and we both were in awe of everything we saw and felt while watching. It was the start of our fandom of Makoto Shinkai. We even met him once and got an autograph on our 5centimeters per second bluray :) That was way before Your Name. It was when Children who chase lost voices was released. But I didn't like that one so much. Garden of words again was great. :) We even visited the place the protagonists meet in Japan. Last week I watched Suzume and I'm really curious about your opinion. I just saw the Suzume Video before this one. :D From what you said about weathering with you there I totally agree. And I thought Suzume was a lot better than weathering with you. But not as good as Your Name, from my personal point of view. ^-^

Wow, thank you for sharing you and your husband’s story with me! When I visited Tokyo a few years ago I also felt the need to visit the garden from Garden of Words (Shinjuku Gyoen) and it truly is a magical place. To answer your question, I liked Suzume a lot. I was concerned going in that it would be overcrowded and overly long, but I feel like it avoided these potential issues by making the movie focus so strongly on Suzume herself. I also think it mostly managed a good pace throughout. The last few minutes of the movie might be my favorite single scene Shinkai and his team have ever done. The montage of everyday people saying goodbye in the morning only to not come home in the evening is unbelievably moving, and just writing this comment right now make me want to cry thinking about it. Suzume is probably not my favorite of the bunch, but that scene makes the whole movie feel worth it to me.

Okay i know im late but i recently rewatch 5 cm per second read the Light novel and finally read the manga. the first impression when i first saw it was like damn heartbreaking but then again i loved and fall in love with the animation . it was back in 2011 lol , I was able to understand the whole concept of distance in another format , i was always the kid in school who got stuck picking up the new kids no matter what grade . So i was stuck with them but i was at that time very outgoing and very friendly and read the room . So back to the movie it was amazing at the time i didn't love the ending because it felt like either rush or i just didn't understand fully at the time , i just know i was upset that they never met up and found each other after they both moved back to tokyo. Now that i've seen it currently in 2023 , I was like if someone stole my heart and left me empty . As a kid i also thought like takaki i wanted to grow up as fast as possible and do stuff ( also like the mc from gardens of words ) . Now that im an adult i know the feeling in all aspect in friends love, long distance relationship, Moving away and even moving states . But the one i did gain was that 5 cm per second hits most of us is because it's ideally the most realistic romance of not winning and learning how to move along and what happens when you don't. But this movie 5 cm per second has been a huge help and showing me i gotta move along .(feel like i explain it the best way possible from my pov.) Finally your name is pretty much 5 cm per second with the ending you wanted with Akari and Takaki , Just different ppl and different time lol . Honestly this video was amazing keep it up . Maybe well see an update after you read the manga or Light novel . the Pov of Akari the Pov of Takaki in the 2nd part , And finally the final Part of Riza or Risa ( Takaki GF in the final part .) Destroyed me . But overall Shinkai makes moves i love and animation always on point for 30mins 45 min 1hr 1hr 30 mins no matter the time .

loved the 5cms analysis you made, it's still my fave shinkai movie to date. I respect that people find it boring or that Takaki is insufferable but personally I really feel it captures those very human moments like you mentioned and being able to relate to that it hits like a truck at full speed. It's like a journey through memories and lost moments, being unable to let go entirely as life goes on. I feel like his style changed substantially with Your Name (tho I still loved it) and really fell flat with Weathering with you. Suzume was pretty good, I enjoyed a protagonist with a bit more character and the exploration of the theme of childhood trauma (walking through the door to a place of your childhood and speaking to your inner child to tell them it's gonna be alright is pretty common in psychology). I think there are some new things that were done well, others that could have been more interesting and for once I think the love story takes a much needed backsit. I do think there's more depth to Suzume than some other works and it's worth a rewatch and some research to really understand more of that. I'm really curious to see where Shinkai is headed but I hope he doesn't forget where he came from.

I agree with everything you said. 5cm is still my favourite shinkai's movie, I watched it when I was in 6th grade, but I can feel the sadness and the emptiness after I finished watching the movie. Although your name and suzume ost is really good, the 5cm ost can instantly give me the sadness and emptiness from the first note, and nostalgia probably played a big part too... I like suzume story right away after finishing it, the overcoming grief really hits hard for me, but I also have the feeling that if I understand more about the spiritual history, I will love this movie more... And after a little bit of research, it blows my mind. I understand now why every character did something and the naming of the character is really based on the history... I LOVE IT SO MUCH

Suzume is probably the farthest I want to see Shinkai experiment tbh. I much prefer when the fantasy elements are nameless/faceless phenomenon like the dream swapping/half-light in Your Name and whatever you want to call the weather phenomenon in Weathering With You. I thought all 3 movies were extremely good but Suzume felt more like Miyazaki than Shinkai, and if I'm being honest I've never been crazy about any of Miyazaki's works, whereas I've seen Your Name 10+ times, with Garden Of Words and Weathering With You not far behind.
