They were prepared, the arrow actually didn't land inside just passed by, some people say that it was meant to be that way since there was gas prepared to be ignited, but if that was the case it shouldn't have ignited from below. Anyway it was a beautiful show and a beautiful execution. (Sorry if I made any mistakes, english is not my first language so it's difficult to express my self)

The arrow actually went past the cauldron into a flagged off area beyond the Estadi. It did not technically 'ignite' the flame but went perfectly through the intended cauldron's flame's vicinity which was synced up to make it look like an actual ignition source. Landing an arrow into the cauldron would prove to be too dangerous as spectators were straight below!
@jmwoods190

@@chookvalve Or maybe they meant to released gas from the cauldron, and enough to catch the flame on the arrow, but I'm not sure if it turned out to happen that way or what you've mentioned instead!

I understand the reasons for not showing the images of Berlin 1936. However, it was precisely in these games that the tradition of bringing the Olympic flame from Olympia to the host city began, as well as the lighting of the cauldron within the opening ceremony.

I do not understand the reasons for not showing the 1936 images. This olympiad is the one that defined the modern olympic games and all the after war olympiads took the Berlin game as the reference for the game standart. Even Coubertin said it was the best olympiad he ever witnessed in his entire life. The only reason they're doing this is because of the increasing power of the dictatorship of political correctness, which want to "purify" history from all the stains that exists in regards of modern standpoints. 10 years ago, it would have shocked nobody to show the lighting of the Berlin cauldron, and the video would have shown it.
@glenchapman3899
@glenchapman3899 3 жыл бұрын
The problem is there is no actual footage. The only film I have ever seen shows the runner heading up the stairs, then the footage cuts to an image of the Olympic flag. Then cuts to a shot of the cauldron already afire seen from the far end of the stadium. I think the reason for that is no one realised how symbolic to the Olympics that moment would go on to be.

What's the oldest opening ceremony you have in the archive? I've been loving the opening and closing ceremonies that have been uploaded but seeing the quality of the Munich footage (and seeing some of the other clips I'd never seen before, like Helsinki) makes me hopeful we might be able to get to see some of the 1960s and 1970s clips at some point. Even the Moscow and LA ceremonies in decent quality would be good.

The video should be titled *_Best_* _Olympic cauldron lighting_ as in many of the clips (especially the old b&w ones) the flame is not even shown. :)

Don't know why they put the early games there, as there was no flame until 1928 and not even a relay before 1936.

Victor Mata Verçosa So, that’s why....but yeah, the 1890s-1930s games are totally different (in rules, included disciplines, athletic requirements, etc.) from today or in any case post-WWII ones. They should be put in a separate category of their own.

Ok, not showing Berlin 1936 is quite sad and disrispectful. They were very eell organized and a legend was born there: Jesse Owens.

People oftrn miss that the 'petals' that made up the cauldron at London 2012 were gifts given to each competing nation. Watch the athletes parade and you'll see them carry them all in. The symbolism of them all coming together was incredible! After the games they were then returned to each nation too!

I am Greek and I loved Sydney's FIRST, then - no matter what envious ones cannot get over the amazing Athens games - it was the descending and reascending cauldron of Athens (never mind that many here who saw and THEY KNOW it was amazing are too spiteful of Greece to want to give credit to the Athens cauldrong. I mean seriously..has the lockdown damaged people's brains and they are mentioning an arrow in Barcelona as though it was I don't know what?) Barcelona Seriously? Anyway - Then my third was Beijing, (many elements stolen from Athens there, like the levitating people), then Rio and London

I can't wait to see the flame lighting in Tokyo! But I don't think anyone can ever top Barcelona where they shot it with a literal flaming arrow! Although, Beijing comes really close! The Vancouver Winter and Rio cauldrons are also the best designed! So pretty!
