I’m Muslim, not very religious although I do love and respect my religion and I do believe in Allah. I was always fascinated by the Ottomans in general, not just because they had one of the most successful and long-lasting empires in history. Sultan Mustafa’s death is absolutely heartbreaking (2:20), imagine living 34 years in one room and die so young, like sultan Ahmed for example, he died when he was only 27. And Mustafa only had to live like that because his mother tried to dethrone Ahmed (Mustafa’s older brother). In my opinion, his mother should’ve payed for the sin of trying to kill the sultan since Mustafa was still a child when that happened. But yet he was the one who payed for his mother’s sin. I’m also watching Kösem (a Turkish TV show about the Ottoman Empire) which is why I know all of this (10/10 would recommend to everyone btw). I also learned some turkish words along the way.

I am wondering how Ertugrul and Osman would have felt if they had known their Empire they worked so hard to create would result in future greedy Sultans, and conspiring family members. You are misinterpreting events because of your incomplete information. A Fight for the Throne can happen in any empire. Only the Ottomans continued to rule for 620 years thanks to the system they applied. In the harem, not everyone lives for the Sultan. Shows don't reflect reality. Harem is a school and also serves as an educated wife to Commanders, Statesmen and ambassadors. In order to enter the harem, a woman should not be beautiful, smart, lucky and Turkish noble. It is a serious institution that gives chance and opportunity to talented people.

In Ertugrul you also see people betraying people close to them because of others that try to gain power through influencing events. Even one of the most respected people like Sultan Aladdin was killed by his half brother and his wife. His wife wanted his eldest son to be the sultan but Aladdin considered his younger son to be the better choice. Often people working for the sultan who disagree with certain decisions that could impact the empire betray the sultan and use one of the offsprings as their 'puppet' to lead the country to their ideal vision. Often their intention aren't bad but the way they go for it is. Like Halil Pasha (a commander of the sultan) didn't want to conquer Istanbul because he thought they didn't have the power. However, Fatih Sultan Mehmet thought otherwise and really wanted to have preparations done of it. To avoid that, Halil Pasha did his best to get the previous sultan back to the throne, in which he succeeded. After said sultan died, he tried his best to kidnap Mehmet's little brother to mold him into the sultan he wants him to be. Thought the brother took his life in order to avoid infights in the Ottoman empire. Because of that event, if I recall correctly, after a new sultan is crown, the other siblings are executed to avoid them being used as tools against the current sultan. It may sound inhuman but for the sake of the empire that is a sacrifice sultans have to make.

Sultan Murad II abdicated but was brought back by a Janissary rebellion, which is why both he and his son had 2 reigns. Mustafa was deposed twice coz he was a puppet and couldn't rule at all due to mental disabilities.

Greatest Ottoman Sultans IMO. 1. Sulieman (Brought upon the Golden Age) 2. Selim I (Land expansion, and acquired the leadership of Sunni Islam) 3. Mehmed II (Capture of Constantinople) 4. Osman I (Laid the foundations for the Ottoman Beylik) 5. Murad II (Revived the Ottoman Empire. Very Underrated IMO) 6. Bayezid I (Lightening expansion)

Imo selim made the empire stable and expanded it the most. He was the Sultan everyone feared therefore his son Suleiman hot a stable empire and therefore had no problem. You should also include Murad IV who also revived the sultanate
