"you'd think it's a place for extreme introverts" No, wouldn't. Not at all. I'm an introvert and this type of living situation sounds like a hellhole to me. It looks way too intimate. Even massives cities would be better since it's often socially acceptable to ignore people in those places.

I tend to be the same, an affect of autism in my case, i wouldn't want to live there, too close to others, not enough privacy, and I like being able to do as i please without bugging anyone, whether it's firing up my power tools to make something, building a fire, using my guns(yes autistic people can use and own them, ive not killed anyone and I don't ever want to, adam lanza does NOT represent us), etc, its more peaceful having a house instead of being stacked on top of each other, healthier too, less risk of pathogens spreading

I always wish for more in depth analysis of the social dynamic of cities like this, or at least more questioning and hypothesis of how people may interact. Because the sexual social dynamic must be very interesting. How does dating go down? And marriage? How do people find their mates? Are marriage rates lower their because of the low amount of residents and low amount of people to choose from, or higher due to the seclusion causing people to be much alike and settle to settle down more frequently.

I think there's hardly any crime because if you rob your neighbor at breakfast time, everyone on your floor will know before lunchtime! And you can't outrun the police, they'll just turn off the elevators and chase you through the fire staircase! There's no place to hide either. "Oh, Mike can I crash at your place tonight? I owe a gambling debt." "Shut up Al, I know you swiped Eddie's cell phone. I suggest you turn yourself in at the first floor before tonight. They do have a warrant for your arrest."

WHATTTTTTTTTTT, my dad was the pastor of the church in the basement! We had moved it from the first floor to the basement because the room was bigger than the first floor church. After that we renovated it and made it look more suitable to be called a church! He pastored the church for two years until my family moved overseas. Afterwards another family took our place for the church. It started with 5 people going regularly to around 35 to 40 regularly when we were there. That's crazy that I would find a video about Whitter! Nobody knows about it!

My grandfather was born in Whittier before Begich Towers was built, and lived in the trailer park that was there. He has pictures of when his family would have to tunnel their way out of the house because the snow was so deep. And every morning the military would fire off a howitzer cannon at 7:00 directly next to his trailer. Then walk across the street to school.

*This is literally the PERFECT concept for a series.* -the complete sealing off of the outside at night; -the isolation by cordillera; -the indoor agriculture; -internal security and policy; -somewhat post-apocalyptic, ominous and eery outlook of the outside world (beyond the mounds and mountains); -and, *of couse,* our dear old friend, Paul (who's secretly tainted by zombie infection but didn't die; instead, Paul removed himself just far away enough from the "City" that he cannot endanger his fellow human kin, but still close enough to receive foods and special survival resources. Oh, and did I mention his name is Paul? Automatically makes him +13% trustworthy. But Paul can't tell the others about his reason for seclusion himself outside, so he pretends to be insane, though he is a grade-A zombieslayer. Pot has been legal in Alaska since 2015. If you are 21 you may have six plants and carry up to an ounce. It's a bit pricey and many of the shops had to temporarily close early in 2017 because they couldn't get enough pot to sell. Actually, even before legalization, Alaska state laws were very lenient about pot. Ravin vs. State, 1975. Medical was legalized in 1998 and that included small indoor pot farms (again, up to six plants).
@largol33t1
@largol33t1 6 жыл бұрын
ksol, it's good that Alaska legalized it. In a big city like Fairbanks and with all those freezing months, it'd be impossible to clamp down on illegal stuff like that. Legalizing it probably made all the Walter Whites of Fairbanks cry because it put a massive hole in their profits.

Thinking the same thing, those Mars One colonists could set up a type of training facility there to learn how to cope with the isolation they would experience. Perhaps help to revitalize the local economy if that's the reason why the city-building is going away. The building's design has great potential. If condo developers built hundreds of buildings like this (while leaving some room for natural landscape), we would have a real *city*, not just a tiny town. There would be a sense of community. There would be places to chill in the winter. There would be very little driving needed. It would be more sustainable than most of today's cities.

Ndasuunye - Nope. For example, if 50000 people lived in buildings like this, it would take a lot less land than 50000 people living in a suburb. Everyone has to live somewhere. Good buildings allow us to leave more land for native people.

Since it's dark for weeks at a time, the whole state must get a little claustrophobic in the winter.

If it is a functioning community with basic necessity it can be called a city.

They'll still be standing long after the entire state is overrun by zombies. The one bad thing about it: if you rob someone three floors above you, the cops will walk two doors over and arrest you. And you get taken to the roof... Where the jail is! But then, you can post your bail with the hotel manager on the first floor!

In 1953 I think it was, the Buckner Building was actually known as the "City Under One Roof" but was eventually abandoned and Begich Towers was completely in 1957. Begich Towers became a condominium along with a two-story private residence, Whittier Manor. But originally the Buckner Building was the army base and port (if I remember right, I live in Alaska and try exploring abandoned places in the state)

I kind of like the idea, I would love to live in a place where I new all of the people. It reminds me of the old days where you used to know your neighbors and the community was much closer. I would have loved to have checked it out.

I’ve lived in Alaska my entire life and have been to Whittier a bunch of times, it’s beautiful and the food is amazing. They even have a runners path going up the mountain that they do marathons on, it’s crazy. I suggest you visit there in the summer when it’s actually decent temperature (Summer)!
