I can't believe a mechanics response to see a crack in a wing was just to drill and hole and be like "Ah, that should do it, another hard day's work!". Even if that stops the crack from spreading, it doesn't change the fact that the plane's wing is now considerably weaker.

That is however the correct procedure Plus the outer plating is to preserve the airfoil shape, and does not play the main role in the structural integrity of the wing. Unfortunately the load bearing structure was damaged, this is the real problem. The load bearing structure damage was not accounted for.

It was part of a science focused episode which is in the second season for the U.S. The second season took episodes from random seasons that were made when the show came out under a different name. I have seen this season through Amazon by having the Smithsonian Channel subscription (prior to Paramount+) and Delta 191 was on there for a science episode.
