I bought 25 of these 2x2x8 beds from Houston and assembled them by myself. The ground nut and bolt were also an issue for me. But a couple of 4x4 pieces of wood lifted them off the ground. The units are remarkedly lightweight and easy for a 115# 75-year-old woman to move around by stepping inside and lifting using the braces. They are very sturdy as we experienced high winds before I was able to fill or secure them, which rolled them around. (None went air born.) I saw no damage or dents of consequence. I believe the braces kept them in shape with no twisting. They sat in the garden all winter through rain and freezing with no sign of rusting. I haven't added the rubber edging yet. Will take a wait-and-see attitude after they are in their permanent location in the garden. So far...I would recommend.

Great video Michelle, and lots of good advice for the newbies. I built base frames of 2" x 6" lumber for my beds to sit on and am now in the process of filling the paths between the frames with woodchip and leaf mulch, the idea being that when the mulch rots down to form compost I can dig it up, pass it through a sieve and put the finer stuff onto the beds. The coarse stuff will go back onto the paths with new mulch being added. Any weeds coming up are pulled and simply dropped on the paths to dry out and eventually become part of the compost. The bottom halves of my beds are filled with a mixture of logs and coarse woodchips, with some logs being placed crosswise to prevent the beds bowing inwards, which can happen when the cross bracing is bent downwards by the weight of soil above them as the lower contents settle. TIP: If the beds are placed on sandy soil and tend to dry out too quickly, put builders plastic (pond lining is expensive) in the base of the beds, turned up about 6'", to form a type of hügelkultur come wicking bed. I also use about 4" of sugarcane mulch on top of the beds to help prevent evaporation.

I'm not going to last much longer but I bought 4 of the VIGO beds this morning. This is my legacy to my family . I have done everything I could possibly think of to prepare for the future survival of my family. This is one of my final gifts to them and hopefully this will provide them with a way to grow food when food becomes scarce. This in combination with an orchard and other food trees and bushes should provide them with year round food.

Very thorough review update. I cant believe its been 150 days! You and I both got them all done up same time. I now have 5 Vego and 4 Birdies. I will have to admit they are similar but configuration is what had me purchase the ones I did. For future beds (may get a few more) I will be going with Birdies. Kevin's team are just "on it" with customer service and that is super important to me when you run into issues. I have been considering getting the Vego modular cover system for spring. I had way too many pests this season. I would get it now but our winds will soon be starting for months and Im afraid it might rip in the wind. Look forward to your review if you decide to get it. I dont think anyone has gotten it or reviewed it. Ive searched and searched but have come up with nothing.

My family still lives in NE Florida, but I moved to Wyoming, where I live in the high desert at 4,500 feet. Gardening has been a challenge, and I finally got a greenhouse last year. The wind is a serious consideration, with a 30 mph wind considered a gentle summer breeze. After watching your videos, I'm seriously considering getting a metal raised bed. It would hold up to the weather here. Thanks for answering viewers' questions, which answered questions that I had too.
@michelleinthemeadow2 жыл бұрын
The high desert is no joke for trying to grow. Have you looked at any permaculture features for digging in berms and swales to capture water from time to time? The raised beds probably would hold up fine but just like everything else you likely will need some kind of plant support in 30 mph "breezes". Glad I could help. Thanks for watching and happy gardening!

Another great video, Michelle. I like your frankness and thoroughness. I started using Espoma products this year also. I found they are not a bad price, especially for organic. I also started using Alaska fish emulsion for nitrogen and Alaska Morbloom for phosphorus and potassium for a more fast acting fertilizer. If I had kept up better with fertilizing I could probably tell how well they work...lol. Biochar seems to be something that some gardeners swear by. MIGardener has a video on how to make your own using hardwood lump charcoal and crushing it up and soaking it in compost tea. I was going to try that next.

The edging on the birdies, is not a long term solution. I have 4 of these for about 10 years. The edging perishes in the sun, and generally does not stay on after a time. If I did again I would put some silicon on the metal before installing the edges. To be honest I don't understand why they don't just put a double safety edge on the metal during manufacture.
@michelleinthemeadow2 жыл бұрын
Old Mate thank you for sharing your experience. I definitely will be keeping an eye on the edging for both beds. Supposedly Birdies has made some updates recently, but again time will tell how it holds up. That is an interesting idea about making the edge safer during production. RE: cedar wood (if anyone was wondering).. It’s very expensive. I may make a cedar frame for the top of my metal planter(s) when I buy one.. Not in contact with dirt I think the wood would last at least 15 years (maybe a lot longer .. since I’ve only had mine 10y). In contact with dirt (in Atlanta), lasts 5-9 years.. I built 2 planters, both needed repair before 10y (they had legs, and even though used 1” thick cedar, the bottom still rots out). The side boards rot too where dirt touches (and/or bugs are eating the wood).
@michelleinthemeadow Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. I suspected about a 10 year usable life for a cedar garden bed. I am working on some comparisons between metal and wood. Happy Gardening!
@robertmckee8453 Жыл бұрын
I just remembered something.. When I bought the cedar (all they sold was western cedar), the guy said 2y in contact with dirt. But my 2-planters lasted 7-10y (depending on the exact definition of ‘lasted”). Or maybe it depends on the environment (the bugs & the soil).

If that creek rises high enough to encompass those beds, the water would seep through the screw holes & be taken up systemically by your veggies.

Thanks Michelle,just the review I have been looking for. My dad is 85 and still gets around pretty good. You would never know he is 85 though 😊and he loves to garden. I was planning on getting him a couple of beds since his wooden beds are starting to rot. I know you prefer the taller 32” range beds, but do you find that they are too tall for the larger crops such as tomatoes, and cukes? Those are his go to crops. Of do you think the shorter beds (17” range) would be a little better for the taller plants?
@michelleinthemeadow Жыл бұрын
Great question. Thanks for watching. For indeterminate tomatoes I would be more likely to go with the shorter bed. I had cakes in mine last year with the trellis and it was perfectly OK at that height. Even indeterminate tomatoes could be manage with lower and lean methods. I hope that helps.

Hi Karen, welcome to the channel. I think they will be A-OK. The Birdies are in use all around Australia, and Vego is located in Houston and have test farms there. While I'm no expert gardener, I do think especially because of the hot dry climate that a good thick mulch will be important, and likely as you're able - keep the soil watered occassionally so it doesn't become hydrophobic.
