Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 7b. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

Hey Rachel , thank you for the garden bed reviews. I wasn't familar with those two particular companies and their products. The quality of the beds seems to be pretty good. Again, we appreciate you 🌞

If you want to extend the life of metal tanks (horse troughs) get a zinc annode and wire it to the tank. You can get annodes at most boating stores or hardware stores (water heater parts). The annode corrodes faster than the steel. After a few years checkbon the annode and replace it if needed.

With rocky soil, it might be possible to sift the rocks out. Depends on the ratio of rocks to soil.

Great video. Living in California I have always wondered if the metal beds would get to hot and dry out the soil to fast? Thank you Rachel.

According to the companies they both are very good at heat dissipation so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Ray-ray, I use old clawfoot iron tubs... buy them for 50... u can easily scrap them for 50-70..so buying them for 50 will always be the winner!! I have 7 thus far as well as one I built out of free river rocks and 5 bags of type s mortar... 40 dollar build and looks fresh😊, God bless you

@SageandStoneHomestead porcelain coating not raw iron.. but to answer your question directly no! Plant 12 peppers per tub and be ready for the immense yield.. I only dedicate 1 tub to peppers and have enough dill pickled peppers and dried flakes for over 1 year using them daily.. quite prolific with the roots being so warm (zone5)

Great video ! Thanks very much. I have 2 Vego beds but will buy some vegegas because they are on sale and I can save $50 for essentially the same thing. I'm not certain but they seem to be made in the same factory ? I have looked at many comparisons and yours is the only one that talks about the Vego charity program which I will look into as that is something I want to get involved with this year. I think the metal is much better than wood which looks terrible after the first year. If you ever make it up to the land of the Biltmore ... I would be happpy to show you around. Bill

We have bad soil, clay. So where doing raised beds. There’s no located near us that you can get compost from.

That's so unfortunate! I wish you the best on your clay. My in-ground garden is right on top of clay as well, but I was able to put a good layer of compost over the top.

I helped a farmer, and his crops were in the ground... you do not plant 80 acres of alfalfa in raised beds. BUT, it you are older, don't want to bend down so much, & Raised beds are something that will fit in your space, raised beds may work for you :-) I live in clay, so, for the best place tor tomatoes & peppers, I will make a raised bed, when my wife leaves for Taiwan. She leaves in a week, but are there winter crops that will do well, before I plant tomatoes, peppers, & Zucchini? Sacramento, CA.
