Happy 11th Anniversary to Portal 2! Originally I was gonna release the Core Hub Era video today, but things came up and information had to be redone. So take this as a complementary upload to fill the gap! Here's my (unscripted) opinions on every released Portal mod ever.
Workshop Mappacks such as Into The Multiverse and Cosmogony were not included as they're workshop releases and not full on mods, plus I have other plans for them.

19:53 honestly i'd put reloaded in S tier for how each puzzle is just difficult enough to make you feel like a genius when you solve it. it nearly short circuits your brain, but not quite. i wrapped around the mechanics pretty quickly, but it hurt my brain from all of the thought processing lmao

Many of the most popular Portal 1 mods came from an era where developers mistakenly thought the harder the chamber, the better the quality. (Not the puzzle itself. Good puzzles are good. I mean the obvious solution that is too difficult to do for some people). This is what reepblue said on a stream about Blue Portals and his regrets about how he made it. This is definitely true for Prelude. Also, stuff like Gamma energy doesn't bring much new stuff. Just puzzles with obvious solutions that take time. Later into the game, it becomes more interesting, but it's just that it's full of chamber place fillers that are retail Portal difficulty. The dev for Unity said he never got to finishing the P2 edition and kind of made it playable enough to release it. Also, I wonder what you think about Hetzchase Nailway, but that mod is near unplayable for half of the game now.

Did you know there's a fan port of Portal: Still Alive (basically an xbox exclusive portal mod, it just has a few more chambers and such)? I bring it up because the port includes the Portal: The Flash Version Mappack by default, and has all the originally xbox exclusive aspects too.

i haven't really been able to play many portal mods outside of steam tbh. i only got to play portal epic edition and i have no idea how i even got it to work on a steam deck lmfao. all i can remember is that i replaced the portal 2 files with the files in the portal epic edition and it worked. it turned portal into epic edition. it took a while to change back though. and the glados bossfight would crash at the halfway point.

Gamma Energy is one of my favorites, always nice to replay for a bit of a longer Portal experience. I thought the mechanic of sending balls through the tubes was a really cool test style, and I really liked the look of the energy balls going through the glass tubes and generators during the escape section.

hey now, aperture tag and portal prelude are one of the best games out there. There aren't so many that we are able to play plus they give a lot of their custom story. I think a lot of effort is put into them, unlike most modders who pre-announce "something big" and then leave the mod to die on the mod db website for 10 years without any updates

reloaded is S tier for me, to this day i love my solution to the final puzzle SPOILERS: there was no hint for the button after fourth gate to reveal platform used for cube return, so i solved the puzzle as there was none. I setup time traveling light bridge to fling myself to the middle, skipping barrier 1 and 2, i had to do that twice to setup my cubes, one to open barrier 3 and 4, the second cube I throw at the end, so i can push required button. I knew it was cheese solution as it skipped first two barriers, but i was too invested to making it work, and it made a unique ending for me.

I'm with you on TWTM. It's not at all clear sometimes what the objective is, let alone how you're supposed to get to it. Even once you figure that out there's the whole problem of pretending to hand a cube to a version of you that you can't see, pretending to carry a cube you can't see while you're recording and just having to hope that it doesn't brush against a fizzler, and also hoping that you get to where you need to go before the ten second timer that you ALSO can't see expires and the fizzlers turn back on. If you screw any of that up, it's usually back to square one, starting the level over and re-re-re-re-RE-recording your movements. The first ten minutes of every puzzle are usually spent figuring out what you're even supposed to do, the next ten are spent figuring out how you're supposed to do it, and the remaining twenty plus are spent actually trying to execute your solution without throwing your keyboard in frustration. I don't think I even got halfway into that mod before giving up.

yeah even if you figure out what to do, if you mess it up, then you have to start all over again. i did get through the first few tests but after that i ran into this problem and started to get annoyed that i was doing the same thing over and over again

I think this is a pretty good tier list! I’m really happy someone put Factum Solus as a good ranked mod, some people really hate the mod and there was this one video I saw that completely hated on it. Still, this is a great tier list!

For me at least hammer errors are alright as long as it doesn’t distract from the overall experience, but yea Factum Solus does have a couple of hammer errors aaaa

id unironically put portal epic edition on S tier. it's a shitpost mod, but it's genuinely high quality and has some pretty good ideas for the "puzzles" the only thing i ever really hated was the backtracking on chamber 4. i can't remember if that was the cbt maps or main map though. CBT chambers were also amazing, they're shitpost and ridiculously difficult, but the concept is genius. like the part where you use a barrel boat on the blue acid to navigate the area in chamber 13. it's a shitpost with quality, i love that. the rocket turrets riding manhacks is like the 2nd funniest thing in the mod, next to the manhack crates.

I played through most of Portal Stories: Mel. A for concept and story, C for puzzles. For example, maybe I'm just an idiot or haven't played Portal in over a decade, but the very first puzzle forced me to watch a walkthrough to see how I got out of that room. Not a good start for me, but I admit I was impatient to dive into a good fleshed out story mod. The majority of puzzles were challenging but not very satisfying. I got tired before the end and just watched a playthrough of the final stretch. Good overall, but needs more polish to be really on Portal 2's level. I agree it's probably the closest a mod has gotten to that level.

We need a playthrough/bigger video on CWTH, because it's got so much insanity but no one talks about it-- it's almost worthy of the S tier just because of how ridiculously stupid it is. I hated every single moment, had to go on god mode to finish it, it made my laptop overheat and die, and it haunts me at night. It's my favorite mod

I do think Aperture Tag and TWTM should be a bit higher. They're more competently put together than say, Prelude, even if they aren't the best. How hard are some of these BTW. I was able to beat Reloaded without a guide but it was brutal (especially that last chamber) and I'd like to play a few (Rexaura, Factum, Gamma Energy mainly) but I don't want to get stuck for hours/have to cheat like I did with Original Mel and Prelude (Though those were both a long time ago)

Disagree on aperture tag, and portal memories. Memories would be C Tier for me, and Tag would be S tier. Guess both are probably just on preference. Mostly agree with everything else or haven't played those mods.

Maybe I'm just biased because it's the only portal mod with a price tag, but i always felt like it just fell behind most other mods. The gel gun is kinda a very limited gameplay mechanic to begin with, the artstyle was a mess, and the story was just weird.

One thing that's strange about Mind Escape is that the explanation on the design change only shows why there are two different designs, but not how it changed, you just go from one to the other after a BTS part in-between. Spoilers ahead! The answer is that the two designs come from two different universes, but there is no indication at all that you either went to the other universe or caused an alteration in your own. There is a LOST TV series easter egg that might be the reason, but the change still happens whether you find it or not, so I don't think so. Are we to assume that our Aperture just used the design from their counterpart in another part of the facility? If that's the case, there's no need for a multiverse backstory to explain it. Some people already assumed Portal 2 begins in another part of the facility with a similar but not identical test track in a different design, since the chambers are not exactly the same, and a few ones are even totally different. I still like the mod, but that kinda makes the main motivation behind it pointless.

There is a LOST TV series easter egg because some of ME developers worked on Half-Life 2: CUBE earlier and CUBE was heavily inspired by LOST. The main easter egg of ME is huge SARMA Initiative hatch which can be unlocked by entering the code. In order to get the code, you had to find a SARMA cube inside a big car which is faced its back side to the wall in the room with 2 big cars and floating "chamber". Then, you had to take the cube with you and bring it to the TV so it would show the code. This is the code you have to enter 020163 Anagram of 163020, number of Snowdrop Escape OTHER-LIFE is a universe where USSR continued to exist so SARMA IRI is a new organisation here. Together with Aperture, they built Object 29 "CUBE". Yeah, this reminds of Snowdrop Escape. This is because SDE developers are ME developers

Aperture Tag is more Low B, high C. It had fun moments, neat concept, a lot of polish, ehh jokes. It was ok, however my perspective was moved a bit with Portal Stories Mel being free and a million times better.

I feel like thinking with time machine wasn't bad, at least conceptually; you said the biggest part of the puzzles were the setups, but I see no issue with that, there's still puzzles, just with a different approach. I would put it at least C teir, maybe B teir. It was definitely bear bones, but I would take it over portal stories: sMells cluster yuck, over "decorated", unintuitive, broken story, poor puzzle design [which you even mentioned] pain any day; I honestly can't believe you put it S teir at all, let alone without any hesitation. Like with Crapature Tag, it had a lot of potential, but just missed it in so many ways.. instead of undershooting tho, it woefully overshot, and in all the wrong areas..(in both "versions", though there were a lot of things in the nerfed chambers that I feel like should have just been in the original..). They couldn't even be bothered to get their particle in the portal gun to not freak out when you moved.. And it had such a great team working on it, too... (Also kind of a side point, I'm not really sure why these things have been dubbed 'mods' since they're more like fan games; even the ones that do modify the gameplay are in completely different environments/chambers, so I really don't see the correlation 🤷🏿‍♀️)

I respect your opinion but I think Tag should have been a little higher also not trying to come off like a d**k but theirs some instances were you a doging on these mods look some of these people took their time and effort and money to work on something they are intrigued and interested in which they didn’t have to make most of them did it for free all I’m saying is pay more respect and don’t dog on mod authors because with out them you wouldn’t have made your video and we would not have really good story’s being told anyway have a good day or night Ossy if your reading this but I agree with the rest

@@higueraft571 Damn, didn’t think that someone would have replied to this but, here I go. I have changed my mind on a lot of thing’s I’ve said in the original comment. Obviously, I do believe that criticism isn’t bad. One reason being that it can help the mod author out in their future projects. In all honesty I do think properly criticizing the mod author’s about certain flaw in their game is good. I don’t know what was going on in my head when I made the original comment. Other than I think Tag should have been higher. I do think attacking the creator of the mod is wrong but, criticism is alway’s welcomed.
