I'd say Portal 2 is definitely more polished and has a soul to it. But man, I'm just so over-attached to the Portal 1's isolating atmosphere. The lonely feel of Source-engine was never creepy to me, but very soothing and relaxing. Works best for Gmod when I'm building something, and especially for Portal 1 when solving puzzles. Mostly community-made ones, which can take very... Very long time, just to solve one chamber. But I also might be biased in nostalgia for Portal 1's aesthetic.

This might be a silly deciding factor. But I gotta give it to two for setting the bar for valve games/and for modern linear-narrative games as a whole 1 is remarkable in it’s original ideas, puzzles, and it’s compact but interesting story. It’s an A+ proof of concept 2 arguably delivered on the full potential of portal as a game. More and better puzzles, more and better story, multiplayer, player creation. Also for what it’s worth, Portal 2 was basically the “final edition” of the source engine, and I think that P2 exhibited source at it’s absolutely best for gameplay, visual experience, and cinematic/narrative functionality. This feels a bit idealistic, but when HL2 and the episodes come to Switch, I really hope they get the “source 1.5” treatment

There is absolutely no way that Half Life 3 could ever live up to the hype and expectations set up for it. IMO already Half Life 2 has aged a lot more poorly than Half Life 1 has, because it relies so heavily on introducing a bunch of "new" mechanics that are kind of commonplace in today's gaming world. The question is whether Half Life 3 could possibly find enough new ways to considerably innovate in the current gaming world to hold itself up? I personally don't think we'll see many groundbreaking game mechanics in video games anymore.

In my opinion, portal 2 is the better game. I've recently completed 100% of both games, and I gotta give the most props to the sequel. that doesn't go without saying Portal 1 is an S tier game. the original game gave me a great introduction to the series, and by the time I completed it fully, I was satisfied and accomplished. I then went on to grind portal 2, and the amount of polish, easter eggs, and just overall feel of the game and dialogue really scratched an itch on my brain. btw, don't take this comment from the perspective of someone who has been playing forever and who is blinded by nostalgia, because I literally got these games like a week ago lol. I love how the story is much longer, the portals are way more visually pleasing, and the amount of new characters felt really fluid. The voice acting from Wheatly was amazing, it was the first thing I had noticed about the game lol. The levels were more difficult, had more variety, and didn't feel rushed or forced. I am now working on finishing the rest of the fan made portals. those being "Portal: Reloaded", "Portal: Revolution", "Portal Stories: Mel", as well as "Portal with RTX". I have very high expectations for all of them, and would love to see these games perform as flawlessly as the original series. Overall, 11/10

What bugs me more is how in HL:A there are (to my taste) way too many direct borrowings from P2, be it Vortigaunt murals that resemble Ratman's, sArCaStIc Hahn lady or Russell who's basically Wheatley but without the evil part.

Portal 2 also has WAY more replay value. he only thing portal 1 has over portal 2 is the atmosphere, which I like a lot but it's nowhere near enough to bring it over portal 2 for me, atmosphere isn't everything to a game, story and gameplay are more important to me. Most of the events and enemies and characters from HL1 are gone. It's a similar story for both Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2. It's hard to call TF2 a sequel when it's predecessor has such a different gameplay and artstyle. Portal 2 feels out of place in the Half Life Universe because it takes itself a lot less seriously than the rest of the games. Left 4 Dead 2 is barely a sequel, it's more like an expansion pack.

Portal 1 just...feels better to me. The loneliness and dark tone, the claustrophobia of being completely alone with GLaDOS. Portal 2 added many new characters, a bigger back story, and much more humor. I personally preferred less humor, more isolation, more mystery of the back story, and the not knowing what the plot really was until the end....and then you still weren't 100% sure. Was the cake a lie? And GLaDOS being much more evil felt better. Portal 2 had the massive advantage of learning from what people liked or disliked from the first game. Sure, it's better looking, more polished and has more features, but that's to be expected in a sequel years later. But it also had a much bigger team, more money, and a lot of knowledge gained. Everyone loved Wheatly, and I did too, but I think his character too often felt like it was there just for comic relief and exposition. Portal 1 seemed very straight forward, but sometimes I think Portal 2 was trying to be too much with the overload of humor, story, new mechanics etc. Both are great games, nearly perfect games, but it boils down to personal taste. I like how portal 2 hints that Glados or rather the Caroline part of Glados was Chells mother who happened to be the former CEO of Aperature after Cave Johnston died of moon dust poisoning. It also seems she didn't want to be Glados but was pressured into it. The final Portal 2 turret song lyrics also hints at this as it's basically Caroline's voice saying goodbye dear. It all hints so none can be fully confirmed but I like this version as it explains a lot (not all).

The original. - I miss GladOS's colder, more robotic voice - I miss P1's HL2 influence. Everything that got redesigned went from implied Combine nightmare to just clinical tech out of some '50s concept art (again, looking at you, Glados) - I miss questioning whether I'm in a research facility or a padded cell - i miss the grime, beyond the art style P2 is in that weird late 360 era where games just looked... odd, imo, like it was obvious they were pushing consoles past their limit. A lot of assets (like the portal gun itself) looked better in the original. - In Portal 1, physics puzzles are actually physics-based. In P2, every time you jump a large gap, you can notice yourself get "sucked in" because you're really just getting dragged across. Which is lame as hell.

I think using the word horror may have been a stretch for what Portal does with its isolation. Its more just 'unnerving'. Horror can be unnerving, obviously but Portal i think has always had more of a tounge in cheek atmosphere alongside it, even as early as the first game. Portal 2 didnt introduce comedy, it was always there. Silly nitpick but, i thought it was worth saying lol

Portal 2 has one flaw that i can't forgive. All levels have ONE way to be done, 2 at most(in the beginning) while Portal 1 you could literally pass entire levels with sheer creativity.
@yol_n2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if that's exactly a bad thing. The puzzles are more intricate because of that. The flaw with this approach on portal 1 is that puzzles where really easy.
@kieranduffy3434 Жыл бұрын
Hmm I don't see how that is a problem. Portal 2's puzzle are so much more complex, Portal 1 is much easier in comparison.

Portal 2 is a great game, but I just love the simplicity and the creepy old Source vibes of the first one. Never been one to care for story or narrative too much so the first one takes the cake for me (pun intended).

Did you know that there is a Half-Life 1 Xen Skybox in the game? It is part of a cut ending where, after defeating Glados you end up seeing the first level of Half-Life 1s Xen.

my preference is with portal 1, not because of anything in the game but more because it's less game (it's shorter). since it's so short, it's a lot more replayable, kills a bit of time easily. i don't have to dedicate as much for a playthrough as with portal 2.

Well, actually, it is a puzzle, but it has a dark story that we didn't know when we were little, until Portal 2 came, this puzzle game has a bitter and scary story in the past. Don't forget powerful sales with great points .change my mind

I know I am a 2 years late but playin both of them as a kid was crazy and to me both of them are equally amazing though Portal 2 shines so much more mostly because it does what the first portal does but then adds a fresh new take on what the first one did. Yes it does have those comedic moments but the whole thing of feeling isolated shines in the old aperture sections
@kilroy9872 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want out of Portal. Portal 1 was a great showcase for innovative new gameplay, plus a very Valve-style story to discover and beat with an entertaining villain. Portal 2 took Portal 1 as a seed and put 4x the lore behind it, providing 3 major arcs to play through, side character development, and introduced more mechanics to serve as room puzzles.
