I'd love to know which one of these things do you need to focus on? Also while you're here, as mentioned in this video, you can grab your seat in our upcoming Faster Beyond 50 Masterclass here: bit.ly/FBF-Masterclass

This assumes that everyone has been athletic since they were young...I began running at 50. Still thankful that I am just running, not too worried about getting older, just grateful!

At 60, I have a sub 3:20 marathon on the horizon for fall of 2023. If you have been doing strength training all along, sleeping well and paying attention to your nutrition, you can stay pretty fast. Start with these habits BEFORE you get older.

Great advice! At 56 I ran a new 5k pr 18:32. Shooting for sub 18 this summer. Don’t quit, don’t ever ever quit. Keep pushing!!

I really wish CP would put some focus on those of us who started running after 50. I have only been running for 6 months. NEVER BEFORE. No sport growing up…. Nothing…. I am thinking my body has been spared the damage. Couldn’t even run 0.5k when I started. I pushed forward and within 2 weeks I could “run” a 5k…. 3 times a week. My PR now is sub 24min…. At 54 1/2… And I am just getting started… let’s get excited about that… not winding down and withering away….

Timely post… I turn 50 on Sunday, and I’m doing the Shamrock Run 10k on Saturday. I’m trying to set a PR/break :45, but I didn’t follow Coach Perry’s plan for that goal… as a personal trainer with early morning clients, running 5x a week is unrealistic. I did what I could and we will see how it goes on my last race as a 49 year-old. Grateful for all the motivation you provide on this channel. May sign up for the masterclass!

I'm half way through my seventieth year, with an incisional hernia. I have to keep my 5k runs at a certain pace or I start to feel it. So, I'm happy just to complete it. I need a day of recovery. I've lost a lot of weight (T2 Diabetic and am a low carb-er) and do some resistance training with dumbells.

You guys are absolutely right-strength training and sprint training are essential after 50, not slow runs. Taking two rest days before a long run is a great approach. It’s also very healthy to work hard for three weeks and then take a full recovery week. This routine has been working well for me.

I came to running later in life, around 40. I am now 55 and feeling fitter and better than ever but its been about 12 years since I last hit my PB's. I now just try and improve my WAVA (good for age). Is this still OK to do given you have mentioned aiming for season bests? Having said all that, I am now 9 weeks away from a half that I genuinely believe I can PB on again. The reasons for this confidence are that I have taken this training far more seriously than any other, as well as changing diet/nutrition, hydration, cadence and of course subscribing to your channel, as well as other great running resources. BUT I have set three goals so that I don't become too disappointed if I don't PB.

Although this video is geared towards those who are 50 and older, I'm turning 40 this year and found a lot of the points to be applicable and beneficial now. As far as the ego, my 15 year old son has shown that he can smoke me in a short distance sprint... one of the most humbling experiences ever!

Ouch! 😆 I switched to 50ks when I turned 40, and absolutely love it... my younger me smoked my older me, and I decided instead of watching my performance degrade year after year, I'd just change it up and go long. All new PRs etc... and your son might not smoke you on a long run!

Thank you so much for sharing the great information. It must have been something I needed to hear. It was a realization that I needed to hear. It almost brought me to tears.

Some really useful information here which I have found so true though my own experience. I have been running up to half marathons since my mid 20s and then stepped up to marathon when I turned 50. I definitely need more recovery time and even as a male I find a two week build up with one week recovery is what I need now. Lastly, what I have found so helpful is one interval / fast session per week with the rest of the runs at Coach Parry's 190 - Age Heart Rate. My times have improved so much lately with this type of training (pretty much the 80-20 rule).

Hi Coach Parry, the one thing I find missing in most training plans is the after-race. After finishing a specific training plan and the race, I always feel lost on what to do next or during the break, and not sure when to take a new plan. Maybe including the after race in the plan will help us too.

After reading the book faster after 50 and I’m 61 I realize I might need more time for recovery, but some of my problem was in. My times are sometimes getting Elise holding I was giving up fast interval times so I put that back in my programs on hard interval sessions with some easy running in a good mixture and taking more days of recovery and they won’t always do this but right now my time serve are making an inbound and I’m doing better.
