My school careers advisor burst out laughing when I said I wanted to be a Marine Biologist. She said I had no chance and it wasn't a real job. I'm 43 and I've been a full time marine biologist for 20 years. I like to think I've done this out of spite 😂

This is spot on. My eldest went to the schools careers advisor last week. She did a Buzz Feed style quiz and was told she was a polar bear. The careers advisor admitted it wasn't a very accurate test and then said she'd email her some links about courses and colleges. The email never arrived. She chased IT who said "if you expect the email, it will arrive". Helpful stuff.

🤔there might actually be some psychological truth to that. If people say you won't amount to anything you may get the motivation to go prove them wrong (though you may also just get selfesteem issues), while people getting told they'll be successful get an inflated Ego and resulting fear of failure which holds them back in the long run

It made me think of all the films in which there's always someone of whom nobody expects anything, and they become super successful. Typical Hollywood story. Although I gotta say, I like when someone doesn't expect anything from me either - makes me wanna prove them wrong. Rather than the other way around, where it just feels like there's a lot of pressure to succeed.

Career guidance in our school in the 90s was cringy. We were just given a sheet of paper to write down a few occupations we wanted to do, and for the next few classes we'd all have to stand outside the classroom while the teacher brought us in one-by-one to grill us on our choices. Except for the people going to university, who just weren't called in at all. Most of us just filled in the sheet with jobs that we could pretend we wanted to do, and that we could bluff about for a few minutes. Most of us were too young and immature to know what we wanted to do, so it was more about avoiding saying "I don't know", and not getting into trouble for it, than anything.

I once knew a tyoung man who wanted to go into theater. His father wanted something more practical;. there being, in his mind, no way to make decent money in theater. I showed routes to making money in theater., places where entry hjobs could be had, audition online sites for every theater related job.The was annoyed but agreed to let his son major in theater. The son was later diagnosed with terminal leukemia. He came to say good bye. THe father called to say thinks for talking him into letting his son do what he loved. Later the son emailed me to let me know he had gotten a theater related job nearby his parents' home. He was somehow completely cured. He went on to a theater career earning enough money to live a middle class life not in NY or LA.

*This sketch brought tears to my eyes* Not just because this is brilliantly funny, but it reminded me of one of the best human beings God ever blessed me to know - my high school guidance counselor. He related to students on their level, serious if need be, a clown if someone needed to laugh, and would go out of his way to make sure each student he was assigned got what they wanted. I didn’t meet the prerequisites for a class, but he got me in anyway. That class helped me while simultaneously taking the prerequisite class, and subsequent follow-up classes. He knew I could do the work, and believed in me. Thank FAH for bringing back a long ago memory ❣️

That's actually not a terrible advice. Not really great, but I guess "study your favourite school subject" and "consider becoming a teacher" are decent starting points.
@Rot24.mu00q
@Rot24.mu00q Жыл бұрын
@@weareallbornmad410 But it does imply that teachers don't become teachers because they are interested in pedagogy and the work itself, i.e. teaching students. But rather out of, I'll call it desperation at the end of school: "I have no idea what to do at all" Just because you were good at math and are interested in it, you are not automatically suitable to pass on this knowledge and enthusiasm to minors. I don't think I ever doubted a teacher's professional competence when I was at school, but I definitely doubted the pedagogical competence of some. To work with people, especially with students, you simply need a certain talent. A physics teacher of mine really did nothing in his lessons other than read the physics book to the whole class. That's not teaching! When my Latin teacher realized that no one was really enthusiastic about Latin, she really started crying in front of the class about how depressing her job was, how no one was good at Latin and no one wanted to learn it. And a math teacher I had was a true psychopath. She spent most of the class telling us we were stupid and making fun of how we could have trouble with school math and how miserably we would all fail at university (if we even made it there). Sometimes she would throw her keychain across the classroom for no reason. When she once broke a window pane, she then accused us as a class of vandalizing it. All of these teachers explained their career choice by saying that they studied their favourite subject and then became teachers because they didn't know what to do. Of course, this isn't completely stupid advice. That's definitely an idea that you can pursue, something that you can certainly consider. Just a rough idea to start with. But I think you should only recommend the teaching profession if you have certain social skills. In addition, career advice, at least in theory, serves the purpose of allowing students to get to know careers that they previously did not know about, i.e. to find out about their existence. And every student knows the job of a teacher. Your favourite subject is a good starting point, but no matter what subject, studying one of these subjects can also open up other career paths, and it is precisely these paths that are often unknown to minors.

Seriously, I can't get sick of this sketch. You would deserve it to go viral. Esp cuz so many of us dealt with terrible career advisors like the one who told me I shouldn't get into high school cuz I might not finish it based on a stupid test they made us take ON TIME PRESSURE! I also love how you left in all the previous tour dates...it adds character xD

Reminds me of the one at our school. I told her that I wanted to go into software development. She responded that it's tough to get into the field right now. While this was going on, pretty much anyone who could spell IT was getting a job during the boom in the late 90s, universities were not just doubling, but tripling down to attract more students and the government even put out a recruitment bounty for specialists from abroad because there was such a massive shortage. These people are so goddamn useless, they probably need an illustrated manual to breathe.

See a lot of people in the comments telling how bad theirs schools counselors were, and how you managed to do just what you wanted despite theirs advices to give up. You fools ! They were the greetests ! They knew from the start than by trying to discourage you, it would have just the opposite effect ! You've been played.

I remember when I went to the guidance counsellor in my school, I said I wanted to do a lvl 8 in science, she was telling me that I should consider doing a level 6/7 instead. Well I got a first class honours in lvl 8 and currently doing my PhD. Guidance councillors are rubbish.

Oh my oh my, I wouldn't have been able to answer much if Foil were the one asking me questions and giving me these suggestions. It would have been errrr, errrrmmmm, uh huh, oh, ahhh, etc Perhaps it was with such conversations in mind that our country uses online methods. From teenage years to adulthood, citizens can use the careers portal to find out what suitable careers are available based on skills, interests and aptitudes. And from there, the adults can look for jobs too.

Despite the earlier flat tyre & the drive back to Cambridge that night for a 6am start the next day (not a fan), it was totally worth it! So thank you! PS how much of a totes awky mo-mo did you think it was going to be when Hog came straight out the gate with ‘are you father and son?’?! He styled it out very deftly!
