As a 24-year-old, I've realized I have NO idea what my style is. The clothes I can afford are too immature for me, and the clothes I actually like I can't afford. I have no cohesion in my closet whatsoever. So any videos about finding your style without buying tons of clothes and then having to get rid of them would be great! (could even be a twenties toolkit)
@trasslaren4 жыл бұрын
I haven't read the whole thing yet but "the curated closet" by Anuschka Rees is all about that. By the book podcast has an episode on it which is so informative I don't think you'd need to read the book. :)

I have the same problem with expensive stuff but I renew my wardrobe reeeeaally slowly through buying specific expensive pieces but second hand on online thriftstores. That means, that it sometimes takes years to get a certain style of jumper but I know that I will not want to replace it until it‘s falling apart. This started because the cheap vegan highstreet shoes don‘t even last a year and I don‘t buy leather new so I had to look towards second hand stuff
@93Tilly4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend going for a classic ''mood board" exercise and putting together a load of images which encapsulate your preferences. I did this with my summer/winter colour palettes on Pinterest. It reeaaally helped me figure out which pieces I already had that could be staples and where I needed to swap/sell. You'd probably be surprised by how many key pieces you already have and depop is an absolute lifesaver when you have something specific in mind :)

Spoiler alert: Your style will change again xD I personally feel it's more about colour and maybe silhouette. Mid 20s I changed from bright pin up/Rockabilly to flowy black. I couldn't love it more. I have 90% black stuff, very easy. Plus olive/forrest green and burgundy/purple. So much easier for me. Love it! (Well aware in my 50s I'm gonna turn into complete cultured hippie boho chique with fuchsia, royal blue and a white hat)

I think what people don’t realise about minimalism, is that it’s not an “aesthetic”. It absolutely doesn’t need to be a series of monotone shades and empty rooms. It can be creative and colourful, it’s just about eliminating the things which are unnecessary or drag you down in some way. Painting your walls purple, hanging art prints from your favourite artists, having colourful clothes which genuinely serve you and that you actually wear - it can be anything you want it to be really. But at its core, it’s about being conscious of what you purchase instead of restricting yourself or indulging without purpose. If you want to buy a load of books because you know you’ll read them and it’s financially viable for you to do so then go for it. Go with your gut, if something brings back memories you’d rather leave behind then get rid of it. If you wear something often and it makes you feel good when you wear it then keep it. I believe minimalism is very personal to the individual and absolutely can be creative, it’s just about replacing the restrictive aspect of minimalism with intuition.

This is a slightly tangental comment but I've noticed that you never fumble over an author's name or say "I'm not sure how to pronounce it" i.e. not putting effort into learning author's names. I really appreciate that. It is one of my biggest pet peeves when people on booktube/podcasts/etc. don't research how to properly say an authors name before talking about them. Especially considering those names are likely not western and therefore should be lifted all the more higher. Thanks for the that. You're one of the only people (perhaps Jen Campbell does so as well?) I watch who does this.
@narflet4 жыл бұрын
Kayla of BooksandLala is excellent about this, explicitly talks about how she always makes an effort to research how to pronounce an authors name. I think it was also her who once talked about how audiobook narrators don’t necessarily say an authors name correctly even though you’d expect them to be a reliable source!

Regarding the minimalism theme: I would love for you to make more videos about minimalism, sustainability, and creativity :) I got rid of so many unuseful things when I decided to go on a minimalist purge, but I refused to get rid of most of my clothing items, except things that didn't fit me or that I absolutely disliked. The thought of having a white wardrobe also stresses me out!! And it seems that most capsule wardrobes and minimalist wardrobes are always white, grey, and beige, which personally I find quite boring. I need color!! I have clothes that I've owned for 10+ years, and even though I do not wear them every month or even every year, I often find myself rediscovering some of the older pieces and feeling like they're new again. I noticed that this has kept me from wanting to buy new clothes, which ends up being more sustainable than getting rid of all my older fast-fashion items and purchasing new sustainably made clothes. (Also, you're really rocking that orange turtle neck!)

Your thoughts on how hoarding is possibly a reaction to living in a society which doesn’t offer people a secure future, was really eye opening to me. Me and my mum are ‘grubby hoarders’ as you put it (love that) and I’d never thought of it that way but it’s a fascinating idea.

I'm a big fan of most minimalism content, but the one "rule" I've heard that makes me mad is "The 20/20 Rule" which is that if you're unsure about keeping something, ask yourself if you could replace it for under $20 and in under 20 minutes. The presumed privilege of that is stunning.

I would enjoy some fashion vids :) I also really enjoyed your commentary on the relationship between minimalism and capitalism. Often the discussions around minimalism center very heavily on a person's will power and fails to acknowledge the fact that people are not just at their own mercy, but that of a consumerist society. Placing the all the effort on the individual leaves out a huge piece of the puzzle.

You look so cozy 🥰 I'd love to have more fashion videos, and I really relate to what you said about minimalism. I grew up in a really rural area and if we needed something, it was never just a quick trip to go get it, so even though I don't live like that anymore, it has always struck me as very privileged to see people get rid of most of their things? Which seems backwards. I think my favourite orange books are Circe by Madeline Miller, and Inside the Outbreaks by Mark Pendergrast. Although shockingly, have not felt like revisiting this book about epidemic surveillance this year 🙃

I feel the capsule wardrobe thing SO MUCH! I don't even feel like I dress nearly as colorfully as I could, but I still LOVE color in my wardrobe. I just (personally-no shade to neutral lovers) don't get the appeal of wearing only neutrals? I also love pattern and when you have lots of patterns in your wardrobe, it's so much harder to have minimal options, because you do need options that you can match with those patterns. I'm also so on the creativity front--I think it's great to have only a few staples, but having pieces you love that only get pulled out sparingly for special occasions feels right to me. Anyway, I enjoyed hearing your thought on the topic!

i really appreciate your discussion of minimalism, you mentioned some points that i often miss in other people's approach to it and i'd love to hear you talk about it even more in the future! As someone who was raised by parents that grew up and lived in the gdr, keeping things and 'hoarding' is not motivated by capitalist greed but by an effort to make the most of what you own, save resources and money, and be prepred for potential scarcity in the future...
@DancethedrizzleBlogspot4 жыл бұрын
High five from across the border, former Czechoslovakia. What I see now, esp. in the older generation, is a clash of growing up in this mindset that you mention - keeping your posessions to make the most of them - with today's relative prosperity and ease to obtain anything and everything, often cheaply. Which, inevitably, leads to some degree of hoarding. (At least in my experience with the people in my circles.)
@albaKonst4 жыл бұрын
Minimalism frustrates me when it becomes about ~having~ less stuff, as opposed to *buying/consuming* less stuff. Like when people do a wardrobe clear out and then just go and buy more clothes. I am fiercely creative; i love making things in so many different ways - knitting, sewing, woodwork, embroidery, leatherwork, painting, drawing, etc. My partner complains that I have so much stuff, but why would I throw things out just for the sake of having less stuff? They're all things I use, or I want to use in the future, and I don't want to throw away material scraps or paper scraps or small balls of leftover wool when I could use them in a project in the future. I'm definitely a grubby hoarder in that way - I hate throwing anything away when there's the possibility that I might put it to good use in the future. So yes, I would *love* to hear about minimalism and sustainability and creativity. Really cool to hear you talk about thing libraries and even toy libraries when you were little! I volunteer at a tool library, and tool libraries are fast growing in number across the UK! There's at least one in London now (Brixton) so that might be worth checking out - you could probably borrow a decent sewing machine for example!

I love the toy library! We had no money so I went back six times to re borrow the baby born, and then finally after a year, my parents could afford to buy me one and returning it made me so damn sad, because I had a history with that one. I first got into minimalism a few years ago and at the time it felt right and was a great tool to focus on goals that had to do with saving money and downsizing my wardrobe, so that I could easily move abroad.. However, after 2 years of travelling, I've found a new place to call home and I feel so much better having lots of things on the walls and on shelves, etc. It makes it feel so much more personal and homey and I've learned that I can still save lots of money while getting 'new' (mostly second-hand but I love that) things. A lack of things makes me feel so unsettled.

I thrift most of my stuff, but have difficulty letting stuff go. Also really into the idea of thing libraries...I would love to see a tools/home improvements library in my community. For want of a 'Thing library', I really like the function of the 'Sell your stuff' facebook page in my city which rather than just being focused on selling things has a lot of posts from people asking if they can borrow things. I've leant out my tripod for someone's wedding, we've borrowed a high chair and a travel cot for when my partner's family came to visit. Also great point about artist income streams, I hadn't thought about that! I can't watch videos about curating spring/summer/autumn/winter capsule wardrobes 😅. I'm not sure, but maybe a more sustainable version of an outfit video might be say taking a top and showing different things you might put it with to show people how you don't need a massive wardrobe to come up with different outfits. I also think not focusing too much on whether people will be able to exactly recreate the outfit themselves, as a lot of fashion KZbinrs do, helps as it lends itself more to secondhand items which is great.

I'm sad that you haven't found the inspiration to read it yet, so here's a little spark, Margaret Mitchell was a historian, and GWtW was her way of tying together a lot of the Civil War timeline. Though appropriate to it's time, the casual racism can be difficult to process, but the story is worth it, if only to say, you've read it.

I have never tried to be a minimalist because I have never really had a problem with over-consumption (because I hate shopping). I have clothes from over 10 years ago that I saved for a while and then brought back into my wardrobe later. It's like everyone forgot about the reuse part of reduce reuse recycle. The thing that infuriates me so much about the mainstream minimalism movement is how incredibly classist it is. It's mind boggling to me that people think everyone is in a position where they can just rebuy things whenever they need them instead of stocking up when they can afford it or when things are cheaper on sale or in bulk. I remember watching a minimalism decluttering video one time and the girl literally threw out everything that had multiples even to the point where she thought she only needed one pen. For some reason that really stuck with me as being absurdly ridiculous and privileged.

When you were talking about Beg, Steal, Barrow I was reminded of the episode knockoffs by the podcast Articles of Interest. In the episode she discusses how copyright protection (in the clothing industry in this case) often just protects big corporations since they have the money to start a lawsuit. Whereas when the designs of small designers gets stolen by big fast fashion companies (which happens a lot apparently), it's really hard for a small designer to sue the big corporation. So in reality copyright law doesn't protect the individual artist, it just gives more power to big corporations. It's a really interesting topic and I can definitely recommend this podcast to people who find this stuff interesting! I'll definitely pick up Beg, Steal, Borrow when I get a chance :).

She has a condensed idea of "fewer, nicer things" that takes a lot of inspiration from minimalism, but gives a lot of room to play and curate a style. And she's a writer and I think you would really like her speaking style.

I think my favourite orange book is 'here i am' by jonathan safran foer. What a stunning cover. And what a heartbreaking story.
