But I understand, watching a video and realizing you've been lied to is hard work, so I'll summarize it here. Miyamoto's job when it came to paper mario was occasionally play test sticker star. He found it boring and suggested that maybe it doesn't really need a deep story and they should focus on gameplay instead and to mostly use preexisting characters. Tanade then took Miyamoto's "gameplay first" philosophy to deep and killed sticker star. its very possible its a translation issue with japanese. i think ryu means like lightning or something and of course theyre parodying street fighter so they made "ryu guy" a martial artist. then, translating it to english they were probably like "whats the closest thing to lightning? zeus guy? whatever" instead of keeping the original japanese name

​@@happysqWidNot sure how much you still care, but I had a look at the fan wiki, and unfortunately the Japanese name has nothing to do with it (literally Karate practitioner) . Although there is no explicit explanation for its English name, I believe it is because of the "crackling projectiles" that it shoots at the player, which are in actuality chi blasts. This gave reason to name the Guy after Zeus, since the chi blasts acted like a lightning attack, stunning the player on contact.

When pronouncing Sergeant Guy's name, the existence of Private Goomp and Corporal Paraplonk implies that Sergeant Guy is named such, not because he IS a guy but rather becuase his NAME is 'Guy' (likely his surname, but he may also only go by one name). Yoshi's Island indeed came out a long time after SMB2 (1988). HOWEVER, SMB2 wasn't playable in Japan until 1993. Yoshi's Island came out in 1995, so it was only 2 years. This is also probably why Super Mario RPG used SMB2 enemies so heavily. They had just been introduced to Japan a few years earlier.
