In 2014 I started an online petition asking for a review of Smart Motorways as a concept. It tiomed out before getting to 100,000 signatures, but I'm pleased to sere that the road safety issues involved get more air time these days !

Thanks for sharing the details of that situation - much appreciated. As you quite rightly say, it's a real mess. The whole Smart Motorway roll-out has been a shambles, and the dreaded All Lanes Running sections are proving as dangerous as anyone with an ounce of common sense predicted. No matter how much (unreliable) tech is added, there really is no substitute for a permanent hard shoulder. The good tech and enhanced CCTV will make our hard shoulders safer than before, so that's one positive by-product of these horrific roads. As a fellow classic car owner, I truly believe that the classic car community need to get together to publicly oppose ALR Smart Motorways, and help to force the government into a change of policy. Not all Smart Motorways are bad, and the design known as Controlled Motorways are proven to be the safest roads of all. Unsurprisingly, these sections retain a permanent hard shoulder! Classic car drivers are perhaps the most at-risk motorists of all when on ALR sections, due to the comparative unreliability of older cars, plus the lack of advanced safety systems (crumple zones, airbags, high density rear lights, even hazard warning lights in some cases). Low-slung cars like the Stag are at risk of being missed by the Stopped Vehicle Detection technology which is supposed to compensate for the theft of our hard shoulder, so we, as a community, really need to stand up and make our voices heard on this matter. Hopefully, before the next tragedy. Best wishes to all, and keep safe!
