Been needing to order one for the last 3 months. Gonna buy one today. I’ve tested a Phob out in the past and they truly feel amazing. The main test with them is the longevity and if they truly don’t “break” after a year or so.

Get in there! Better get one ordered fast before Crow gets backed up. I really love the controller and finally don’t have shit internals. Let’s hope they last forever like they should 🤞🏻

A few notes and questions (I'm a modder) Not sure what you mean by "automatically full hopping". Do you tap jump? Controllers with bad pode/overtuned capacitors will struggle to shorthop. GameCube controllers are based on fundamentally the same internals as modern controllers. The potentiometers in gccs are actually much higher quality and rated for many more cycles, they aren't necessarily flawed for any game but melee. Melee is just coded without any of this shit in mind. Also have you ever played on a good modded OEM? Feels exactly the same as a phob, phobs won't develop pode though. Don't think I would be able to tell the difference between a phob and a good OEM though.

Looking back, by me saying automatically jumping I meant to say full hopping instead of short hopping yeah, my b. I have not played on a good OEM controller no. I got a custom controller which was the white one I used right before getting this one. I really liked it at first but struggled immediately not being able to pivot and then the Y button struggling to short hop. I did talk to Rienne about it and said it could be dirty on the inside. After a very good cleaning with another modding friend it still had that problem sadly. I would love to try a good OEM controller or goomwave though just to try them! Very excited for the future of smash controllers. Especially with how good the phob feels and hopefully stays that way.

Hi, I'm Crow (the modder in the video). The goal of the phob has been very carefully set to match a brand new, best quality gcc, and not degrade or change, without resorting to software solutions that are seen by some modders (and players) as cheating, such as uptilt rounding and the DBOOC code in a Goomwave. Pots are flawed for any game that relies on polling and analog inputs, and usually wear out well before the stickbox itself, causing unneeded spending and issues in games. A good modded OEM feels great, until PODE sets in in a fairly short amount of actual playtime, especially since the stick gets so much action in melee. Top players were having pots replaced monthly or multiple controllers tuned by highly skilled modders like N3z or Rienne. If you're serious about melee, I'd strongly suggest a phob as an upgrade to an existing ult gcc that you buy new in box, which work pretty dang well out of the box especially for the new player. If you're a new player, I don't suggest a phob until you're committed to the game and can drop some money to prevent future spending on pot replacements or new controllers.

If you care a lot about having good pivots, a good OEM will only have reliable pivots for like 2 months before you have to clean/swap potentiometers Huge hassle

I have been super split on the Phob. There is a large part of me that wants to ban it but I think in reality what needs to happen is we make a ruleset that bans macros which means the box controllers would have to use an analog stick or have a ton of directional buttons. TO's will have to check controllers. Also button remapping I think is a step too far outside of what we should be doing for the game. If this is too complicated then ban custom board controllers and boxes. We allowed modders to dictate what is allowed and that was the wrong decision. Modders have the most to gain off everything being allowed. The rule change that allowed these controllers to become legal (same with boxes) is the same one that allowed UCF to happen. UCF was implemented to make the game more accessible to everyone without spending $200 on a controller. But the game right now is heading in a direction where you need a $200+ controller to be competitive. We aren't there yet. Zain still uses an OEM controller but at the rate things are changing I wouldn't be surprised if he swaps. I am not like super set on banning these things I just feel like we keep taking more and more away from the game and changing it too much. Basically any of the changes done with Hax's version 1.03 I am against but not set on it if that makes sense. We fell in love with the game with all its jank stop trying to change that. But the one change I really hate is frozen stadium unfreeze it.

Yeah it gets tricky when to’s need to check controllers for cheating. Idk what the right answer is also with phobs being so good for cheating. I know it’s possible and who knows if anyone is abusing it. Same with the box etc. The rate the phob is taking over is truly insane. Mine is just a basic one. And I love it. I can play the way I want without it messing up. I’ve had a lot of bad controllers in the past and I do think it’s a new movement. However people can cheat and it is becoming pay to play which sucks. It’s tough. I know some people will always have better controllers than others with phobs involved etc. a very gray area in the community atm
@b4st1on

fyi: zain has a entire suite of 5+ expensive tuned controllers, all of which cost hundreds of dollars to maintain and are maintained by a top modder. The sad reality is that hardware will always be in an arms race, even if you ban phobs and boxes you will then need to replace the pots in your controller monthly or even more frequently as a top player or any serious competitor. The phob is the solution to the controller arms race, because you won't need a modder to constantly replace your pots, or to buy new controllers when your pots develop too much PODE for crucial techniques in the modern melee metagame, like pivoting and dashback out of crouch, diametrically opposed to the closed source (and cheaty) goomwave, which the default firmware uses things explicitly banned in our ruleset, as well as still needing the pots replaced (less frequently), and only being sold to top players for huge money. The phob is open source, fairly affordable compared to pot replacement/new controllers, and is available from a wide range of modders. Modders actually think and discuss a lot about ruleset and how best to make sure that controllers are legal, fair, and enhance the experience of playing our favorite game. If you go back a few years, it was even more of a difference between a top modded controller and a regular old out of the box controller, because very few people could notch well and worn notches meant a new notched conch from a top modder, as well as custom mods like heartbeat modules, snapback capacitor banks, alternate z buttons, removing the spring or adding a trigger plug, etc, because some mechanics in this game are broken, like how when you go from light shield to hard shield there's 2f when you have no shield so it's better to have a pure hard shield on one of your triggers/wavedash with a springless or plugged trigger.

Just out of curiosity, would you recommend something like this for someone who extensively uses a GameCube controller in general. Not so much for Melee, but Ultimate, along with hardcore speedrunning on the GameCube controller. I tend to have inputs missed that are quite crucial, and I know its the controllers fault unfortunately.

Hi, i'm crow, the guy who made jerami's phob. Phobs are great for ultimate as well as speedrunning, and I've done a few for speedrunners already. The important stuff to know as a runner is what types of additional mods will/won't conflict with your game's control scheme, specifically how trigger inputs are handled is a game-by-game basis, as well as making sure that your phob is configured correctly from a stickbox perspective to make your inputs as easy and consistent as possible on a per game basis, especially waveshaping, kalman filter, and smart snapback.

@@AirAjavan1233 I'm not an expert on smash 4, but if your issues are related to snapback or longevity, I think a phob 2.0 would be a good choice for controller. OEM is usually precise enough when new for most smash games that have less demanding input requirements than melee.

@@anthonydiaz8213 from crow mods (the guy who made my controller) “Yeah I pre-calibrated your controller before sending it over, it's good to know how to do because then you can adjust your notch positions, snapback, waveshaping, etc on the fly or as the sticks wear. I wouldn't ship an uncalibrated controller as that seems like bad practice.” “Also, with the newest firmware you can calibrate and then confirm it to not have to press b every time you plug in, it makes it harder to recalibrate but i pretty much do it on all my conches now because its easier.” I hope this helps!
