Sharing my two cents being a software test engineer; the best SDETs (Software Developer Engineer in Test) are ones who are as technical as a regular Software Engineer, because having a deeper technical background helps with integration and functional testing. In most roles, you want to be a good software engineer first before you specialize. Though, despite being an SDET, I have to work with Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and tons of other deployment tools. So DevOps, Infrastructure, Testing... Ya do what ya gatta do depending on the company haha!

What are your thoughts on developers vs engineers? In the UK 'developer' seems to be the main term, with software engineers being reserved for an elect few yet with no clear distinction as to when one crosses the threshold. It seems elsewhere the 2 terms are interchangeable... can be mighty confusing lol

Most of these seem to be about software engineers in purely tech companies. How about software engineers in semiconductor manufacturing / hardware companies, medical technology, defense companies, low latency trading firms, etc? Like 3D software engineers or embedded software engineers or those that are in the research side of a tech company and those that work more with languages like C and C++ than JavaScript?

Great video! What about SQL developers. I keep seeing job postings with the title SQL developer.What does a SQL developer do? Which one of the roles described in the video is closest to SQL developer?
@namanhkapur2 жыл бұрын
data engineer or data analyst would be closest in terms of sql skills -- depends on if it's "run queries and do something with the data" (data engineer) or "run queries and just give us data" (data analyst)

Hi! Been a Data scientist at a start up for about a year now. My experience is that the DS/ML engineer is the first person to explore any new features that are related to any stored/gathering data or requires some sort of modelling (ML), in my case, utilizing OCR techniques, NER models or other NLP related models (open source tools and cloud providers applications). This includes making a plan for the full pipeline. So when a problem/feature has been identified and is ready to be built, I hook up with the rest of the engineering team to get design and make sure it is compatible with the rest of our stack. Before any integration I usually work by myself (since I don't have any other DS/ML on the team atm). Then I am the one who also pushes the new feature into our tech stack and makes sure it gets tested and monitored. So from my experience a DS/ML engineer, identifies problems that can be solved with automation or other methods (ML, Regex, OCR etc), make initial assessments to solutions. Once a solution is approved by the rest of the team, start planing deployment and integration with the rest of the tech stack and execute on that with the rest of the engineer team (they might have to change some api, design etc) I would guess that the bigger the company/organization, the more you specialize in one part of the pipeline, exploration, deployment, testing etc. But this is just my experience, can't talk for others :)
@H99x22 жыл бұрын
@@arvidwenestam3421 Thanks for your input, greatly appreciated! I can tell by your name that you might be Dutch, German or Scandinavian (I'm from the Netherlands). Do you reckon there are going to be more jobs related to DS/ML in these countries? I've got an MSc in Business Management but am transitioning to DS atm.
@arvidwenestam34212 жыл бұрын
@@H99x2 Scandinavian indeed :) I think overall that transitioning to DS/ML can never be a bad thing. It includes a lot of tools, both academic (math and statistics) and pragmatic (programming, reporting and communication) that will come handy through out your career, no matter what role you end up in. I think the DS/ML job opportunities will not dip for a while. From my experience, in Scandinavia, if you have any skills in any programming you will with ease find a job (been a big deficit of workforce with that sort of skill up here for a long time). I highly recommend the DS route as I feel that it opens up more doors on where to take your career, as it combines the math, programming but also decision influence.
@H99x22 жыл бұрын
@@arvidwenestam3421 Great, Thanks for your input mate. Greatly appreciated :) The DS route interests me, because of the combination of the different fields. Reporting, Communication, Business-sense, Statistics, basic programming (R) and Econometrics are familiar topics for me, due to my academic background. So It's not an entirely new world for me, just need to brush up on a few other skills. We have the same deficit in NL btw. The government is even giving every citizen a 1000euro budget to spend on any IT-related upskill course (which including DS) .
