This tells us next to nothing. Software engineering could be viewed, simply, as a vocational skill. What it actually reveals is how much you, yourself, weigh the importance of attending university. University never used to matter so much. One’s usefulness and broad knowledge gained through self-learning is what used to matter most. In other words, educational systems are largely overrated and it wouldn’t have mattered if she obtained a 4-year degree even if it were from a great American educational system.

As a software engineering manager, I appreciate this video for sharing the story of how someone was able to break into the field without a traditional education or experience. It's great to see that there are alternative paths to becoming a software engineer, and that it's possible to succeed through self-study, determination, and hard work. The tips offered in the video are also valuable for anyone looking to enter the field and could be helpful in getting a foot in the door. It's important to remember that while a degree or experience can be beneficial, they are not the only determinants of success in this field.

yea this is a typical how to become a software dev with no experience no education no brain video.. either these stories are fake or they are just very lucky. i have a degree in a comp sci related field, experience in several IT fields, including testing so i already have some programming competencies, on top of that graduated from a full stack technical bootcamp, have a pretty good beginners portfolio...and im about 300 applications in( only programming positions, not including other fields) yet i have not had one interview. these videos are only good for getting views and creating false hope

@@Jake-np1ujyour portfolio so impressive but i think you should ask someone to help you to make a better resume, or you should ask the employer why they did not give you any chance for an interview. Develop your Brand, think like an employer and maximize your resources. This is what she did. And one important thing many employer hired their staff through their network, so you should have more relationship or connection to the people who is working in this field, traditional jobs board are second option for hiring. Hope you will get many interviews and have a good offer soon.

I always have the utmost respect for people who dare to try new things and dare to change their career path. It's never an easy choice, much less the courage and effort to learn any IT skills. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science but I'd never, in my entire lifetime, have the balls to change career paths as you did. Hats off to you! Also, while everyone is on their journey to learn something new, it is very common to devalue your worth and knowledge on the said subject. I always carried that imposter syndrome to every Computer Science class I attended. But everyone is different, everyone has different skill sets and knowledge. There is most probably someone in your class that are just as clueless, and maybe your finance background might work to your advantage in the future over other IT students without that finance background (e.g. fintech industry). To everyone that's learning a new skill: Don't be discouraged, dare to ask questions, and try to enjoy what you're learning (: Keep pushing on everyone!

You're a good person. You truly inspired me. I graduate from college in Criminal Justice. I knew I didn't want to work in it before graduating. I spent about 5 years visiting in jail a childhood friend of mine, whom also used to live with me prior to his arrest. He got transferred to prison in March 2020. The prison was too far for me to go visit him. Today, I thought about coding and software engineering, and that's what brought me here. I like the fact that I can have a girl explain it to me. You gave me reason to not let a single day go by without accomplishing your life's purpose. You didn't give up easy, that's what I like about you. Just on this past Friday, I got news from a friend who was seeing 100devs Agency working on software development. I don't know what this means about I know that it's something, coming from a kid from Pompano, where I grew up at.

This is very inspiring to see. I'm an English teacher who's currently working on switching careers and I started learning basics of IT first, then moved on to learn Python and hopefully my main goal is to become a software developer. It's very couraging to see someone getting accepted to FANG companies without a degree, even though I can imagine how much effort you put into it. I think a lot of people, including me get discouraged by the fact that we don't have a degree in CS, which causes us to hesitate or doubt ourselves and give up after facing a few rejections. However, the key is to be consistent and it only comes with dedication and patience. So congratulations on your hard earned success and I hope I'll be able to land a job in Europe too! I wish good luck to everyone else taking that journey!

I started as a simple tech support and 8 years later I am the one who handles and manage the network and security infrastructure of a big French company, still no degree lol I realised that experience on your CV does make you stand out from other candidates. L1 tech support -> Network and security admin -> Telecom Engineer -> IT manager. 5 different companies. It was hard work but also required lots of skills that are learned on the job. It's very normal to struggle in the beginning, a lot of employers don't really see you as a serious contender, but you have to keep pushing, and keep using each opportunity (no matter how small) as a stepping stone towards your success. And I'm so glad you mentioned "intuitive"! That's something I really rely on and I feel like it's hard to talk about since most people are very logical and so is this industry.

This video was exactly what I was looking for and needed it to be. A lot of now-software engineers omit or make little of the degrees they obtained before deciding to change careers but forget that part of the reason they also got employed, especially early on in FAANG companies, is because of the previous degrees they got. Especially finance, law or maths. Some of us either dropped out of college/university or didn't even attend and it can be quite discouraging while watching these kind of videos. Also thank you for showing us your journey and giving some practical tips!

yeah as i tell everyone, you DON'T need a bachelors. i have a tech degree and been a software engineer for 6 years now. the only difficult part is getting the 1st job. trust me, pro tip, accept any job first if you can. i got mine in florida for 50k as a jr. since i wasn't much value to the industry. but 8 months later i applied to another company, they overlooked my degree since i had in house experience now. swapped to 70k then a year later i got a 10k raise to 80k. so keep pushing yourself and apply modestly first. the cash WILL come to you in due time.

Thanks so much for your testimony I think one of the greatest skills that any human can learn is to "pivot". Tt was scary, it was hard, and I'm sure it was uncertain for you but your dedication to YOURSELF kept you from sinking metaphorically and physically. No one is locked into any job, trade, career it's so so important that we learn not to be so hard on ourselves so early in the career decisions we make. It's NEVER to late to pivot, your health happiness, and well being should always be at the for front, to a business' you're replaceable to yourself you're priceless

Your video not only helped me, but changed my perspective on the tech field. I’m so used to seeing people in the area starting off as teenagers and having a lot of experience by the time they’re young adults. It’s a little bit upsetting, because I’m a software engineer student now, but it wasn’t my first choice. I changed majors after 2 and a half years and started from scratch. And even though I’m in a field I like better, it’s still, as you said, too theoretical. There’s very little practice and projects to build a portfolio in the major. One of the reasons why I started a bootcamp and have been even contemplating quitting university. Your story, how we both started studying without previous knowledge, and how we need more practice to see result is really something that comforted me. And the fact that you have come so far that is now at a fang company? Girl, you’re awesome. It’s so nice to have people like you as an example in the tech industry. Specially for women. Thank you so much for all the tips, and thank you for sharing your story.

I really respect your hard work and dedication to reaching your goals. I can yell just how passionate you were just by the way you put so much of your time and energy into staying late and asking all the questions. The only advice I would have for viewers is that she would have had a slightly easier time finding a job if she had just finished her B.A. it doesn't matter what it is in. It just matter that you finished one. They like to see it. They prefer a revelent major or minor. You get bonus points if it's from a very prestigious university and extra credit if you graduated with any honors. And a letter of recommendation or a referral from someone never hurts. It's all about who you know and uni is a wonderful opportunity to network. That's it. Don't think I'm throwing shade or unsympathetic. I had the same experience. I was academically dismissed my junior year. I was suffering from trauma, ptsd, depression, and anxiety, because I had a rough childhood and no therapy. I cracked sometime around my 21st bday. Since the dismissal it's been hell trying to find a good paying job, I also live in the sf bay area! It's expensive af. I didn't want to study Psych anymore, I thought I wanted yo study stats and become an actuary since I used to tutor stats. It took years to realize what I want to do. I'm a creative person my favorite work or school experiences always involved design or creativity and I enjoy helping people and making their lives better. I'm doing ux/ui now!
