That moment where they send Peter B. Parker back always makes me tear up. You kind of realize you have a Spider-man who wasn't afraid of death or facing a villain, but was afraid of his own failures. His responsibility out-weighed his power in a way, and became a burden.

Here’s a top 10 suggestion: the Top 10 movies that were snubbed from getting the Best Picture Academy Award, especially if they didn’t even get a nomination. I think there’s several over the years (more so recently) that didn’t even get a nod because they were big budget and not niche enough. Would love to hear your thoughts.

I think the problem is not too many villains. It's too many origin stories. Your movie can have as many vilians as possible as long as the audience knows who they are (look at many batman animated movies) The problem comes from having to introduce several baddies, tell the audience who they are and give them all superpowers in the same movie.

For the most part, Dan, I agree with you. I would put FFH actually above HC because of how devastating Mysterio was (he technically won). I ping-pong between NWH and Spiderverse for my #1. I do agree that Spiderverse is slightly more solid storywise, but you can’t discount NWH’s degree of difficulty. Also, and you stated this before, Andrew Garfield is absolutely brilliant here! A lot of credit goes to the writing, but Garfield’s every scene was pitch-perfect. His reaction to catching MJ is so powerful because of its cathartic nature; you could almost see the weight of Gwen’s death being lifted off his shoulders.
@VonJay
@VonJay 2 жыл бұрын
I really like Tom Holland as Spiderman but his stand alone films were really lackluster imo. He ranked them higher than I would have. On paper, what mysterio did was tragic, and caused a lot chaos for Parker. Outside of the action and the CGI I absolutely loved NWH, I'd put below Spiderverse because I can't see myself enjoying it without all of the prior spiderman movies. Maybe if Goblin were the only being to be sent back and Peter had to deal with marvel's joker then I'd be sure enough to put it number 1.
@sheriffdraws8789
@sheriffdraws8789 2 жыл бұрын
Lmao NWH made no sense. Bad plot. Only fan service. Dr Strange was just a deus ex machina. I have no doubt this movie won't age well. Spiderverse while lovely is a bit overrated. Love the movie. Even have the artbook. But people overhype it way too much. Best movie is Spiderma 2 with 1 a very close second. Raimi nailed everything about the essence of Spiderman in those movies IMO

Thematically, No Way Home and Into the Spiderverse are about the same thing. They explore the ideology behind Spiderman, and through it, what it means to be a hero, and after 10+ years of superhero genre, we are ready for movies to do that. Into the Spiderverse has the edge for me only because it only needs one movie to tell that story, and the artistry of that animation just doesn't compare to anything you could ever manage to do in live action. But No Way Home's approach is one that leaves you equally emotional, rewards long time fans in a much less subtle way but just as satisfying.
@za-ir5ni
@za-ir5ni 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with No Way Home though is all the writing problems that arise to make that happen. Into the Spiderverse accomplished that with pretty much perfect writing.
@nikunjdixit1175
@nikunjdixit1175 2 жыл бұрын
@@za-ir5ni I agree with that. Upon rewatch of No Way Home, there are definitely narrative conveniences and lazy writing used to put certain characters into place which Into the Spider-verse did not have to do, but I also get that No Way Home is dealing with the legacy of Spider-man on film the way Spiderverse doesn't have to.

The What's Up Danger scene from Spiderverse is also one of my absolute favourite scenes in a movie ever. That scene is so good that I instantly had to put that track on my Playlist and every time I hear it my brain goes to that scene. And the villain was silly, even by Spider-man standards.

I can respect Into the Spider-Verse being #1. It is an amazing movie. I can't wait for the further adventures of Miguel O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099) in the sequel. I think it cannot be understated that a lasting legacy of No Way Home is that it elevates some of the previous movies. It gives closure to some characters while offering hope to the MCU Spidey that a happy ending is possible (Tobey Maguire's Spidey). I saw it early because there was no way to avoid spoilers, but I'm seeing it again in a couple of weeks with some buddies and that still feels like too far away. I loved watching your list Dan and look forward to more in the future. Don't let the raving mad part of the community that hates you for your opinions keep you from making them.

Great video! Small point on "The Twist" though: as a kid/early teen, I grew up reading the Origami Yoda book series. The climax of the very first book has these 6th-7th grade kids (set around 2010) all standing up to their fears and doubts, releasing their stress, and stepping out of their shells to "The Twist", which they acknowledge is a dated reference but that the whimsical carefree nature of the song is relevant to their own journeys in becoming carefree. So yeah, super dated song, but even outside of that book series, it's come into its own as of recent and especially among younger audiences.

I’ll never understand the undying love for Spider-verse. It’s a good movie, with a gorgeous animation style that unfortunately gives me a headache with its frame-rate-warping movement. But it doesn’t do justice to Kingpin, the layers of references feel more Easter Egg-y than No Way Home’s, a couple plot points don’t make perfect sense, and - outside of the animation - it’s just another origin story. An origin story told well, but an origin story nonetheless. I’d certainly put it behind The Amazing Spider-Man.

Watching ‘No Way Home’ was an unbelievably amazing theatre experience. That being said, ‘No Way Home’ actually demonstrated just how excellent (and important) ‘Into the Spiderverse’ is as a Spiderman movie. I couldn’t help but admire Spiderverse the first time I watched ‘No Way Home’. I almost didn’t want to admit it, because No Way Home handled similar story elements seen in Spiderverse in an exemplary fashion, but I genuinely do not think we would have gotten what we got in ‘No Way Home’ if ‘Into the Spiderverse’ hadn’t first showed the world how well it could be done.

I do agree with the general placement of most of the movies. I may have some a little higher or lower but pretty much agree. I'm not a fan of the Venom movies. They're just a little too odd for me (tone-wise). And yeah, I think we are all appreciating Andrew Garfield a little more lately. Even with TASM2, there are some good things like Gwen's death, his performance, the swinging through NYC, and the score.

And the time square fight scene. But the movie I am really ready to fight for is the first TASM. I take it over Spider-man 1 any day.

@@swanpride The Amazing Spider-Man is a better overall story than Spider-Man even though Spider-Man might be more entertaining in terms of pure joy.

Hard to argue with your top three. Similar to you, I had Spiderman 2 at the top of my post of favorite super hero movies since it came out. We've had so much good stuff come out the last few years.

I absolutely think that a ranking of a director’s filmography would be amazing. Some suggestions outside of the names you already mentioned would be The Coen Brothers, Tim Burton, and Chris Nolan. Always grateful for your insight Dan. Happy Holidays! 😀

Hot take: Into the spiderverse (ItSV) is a better spiderman movie, but no way home (NWH) is a better spiderverse movie. Because the characters in NWH have entire movies its pulling elements from, but ItSV is forced to use relatively unknown characters, with limits on their narrative significance. NWH has the advantage infinity war and Endgame had in terms of story telling.

Honest-to-God, I would only make one change to this list, and it would mirror my own feelings on the franchise one-to-one; I'd swap the original Spider-Man with the first Amazing Spider-Man, and the reason being that - for me personally - I can't get through the high school scenes of the first Spider-Man without cringing. Those moments with Flash Thompson, and the school bus leaving Peter behind all wring out the fun of the first 1/3rd of the film in my opinion, hence why I'd put it at 5 instead of 4. Otherwise, this was a brilliant video, and I look forward to more!

Having read Spiderman comics for decades, I'm very much excited for the film treatment for Miles, and Miguel, and less seriously, Spiderham, heck throw in Spider Ma'am. Into The Spiderverse showed the delightful possibilities of all these variations and pretty much spoiled all future films for not measuring up. Thank you for an even and weighing; I hope you will revisit your rankings again in another 20 yrs of Spidey.

Well I completely disagree. I think a ranking when there are several movies is ranking. But first Venom movies are not exactly Spider Man movies so I am not sure if I would include them here. In fact both the Venom movies were made in a way so as to given them a distinctly different look from Spider Man except maybe the mid credit scene. But Venom 2 is a better movie than Venom 1. Venom 1 was more about establishing the character but its narrative was weak. There is not like a full story behind it. Venom 2 had a complete narrative. And better developed characters. It was probably a little too fast paced. But it was well done entertaining movie. It could have better had they allowed the narrative to play out. Maybe 15-20 minutes of screenplay. And a climax where the difference between Venom and his girlfriend versus Carnage and his girlfriend was strongly presented. But overall Venom 2 had a pretty decent story arc. Thomas Hardy struggling to control Venom, his relationship with his ex-girl friend, a serial killer escaping and freeing his equally dangerous girl friend, and cop who is trying to uncover everything. A pretty decent and self contained story arc. I do not remember the Andrew Garfield movies much except for the part that they were just trying to be different from Raimi's movie but had the same template. So a new spider man, Gwen Stacey instead of MJ and new villains. Maybe I need to watch of them to refresh my memory. I was not impressed by the Tom Holland spider man. I think the first one had a really half baked idea. The casting of Michael Keaton as Vulture was great but I am not sure what the focus of that movie was. I mean Iron Man or Tony Stark was presented as sort of mentor to Spider Man. But he did not team up with him. The even the character of Vulture was half baked. He was presented as the good bad guy. Then the Peter Parker track was kind of unimpressive. That movie seemed as if it was not sure exactly what was it trying to achieve. Far from home was better. It had a clear outline but it seemed to be holding back its punches. If a Spider Man Mysterio clash was the focus then it had to set it up that way. That whole road trip, Peter Parker track never impressed me. It just weakens the narrative. In fact as I had mentioned one aspect where Raimi scored was his presentation of Peter Parker and its relevance in the narrative . He was quite good in presenting that story in all his 3 movies. The challenges Spider Man has to face in balancing his real life with the duties of being a super hero and the manner of relationship Peter Parker has with people that are close to him is done really well and convincingly. And its some both Amazing Spider Man and Tom Holland Spider Man movies missed. I still think 3 is pretty good. I do however not like that whole Peter Parker turning bad. In fact that Peter Parker/ Venom track makes you feel that the movie has 2 plots. They either should have removed Sand Man or Venom and played with one track. If Franco was playing Green Goblin then allowed him to play Green Goblin. And left either Sand Man or Venom as the second villain. Played with one track. But it still has enough thrills, an emotional core to outdo the rest of the Spider Man movies.
