Personally one controversy that never gets brought up is how Sandy, despite being one of the main characters, is barely in the show anymore (only now getting a prominent role in the next movie). Nearly a quarter of a century and we know very little about her other than she's a proud Texan squriell who possibly ran away from Texas because she didn't fit in with the other squirrels. There's so many stories we can explore such as where her love of the ocean, bathing suits, Karate, and science come from? Recreating the video game level from the Plug-N-Play where Plankton kidnaps her and uses her to ransom the Krabby Patty Formula. Giving her a Science Rival. Animating the Spongebob Musical. Her relationship with Spongebob? ETC.

Regarding "Behind Closed Doors," the animators drawing their characters in lewd/NSFW situations is actually pretty common across many different studios (you should see some of what the Rescue Rangers crew have done, for instance). It's especially weird/interesting as all the art is in the actual style of the shows.

I still remember the time Nickelodeon censored “Just One Bite” and the scene of Squiddy sneaking into the Krusty Krab and getting lit on fire with gasoline. Even the season 3 boxset I had back in 2005 had the scene re-edited to cut straight to the patty vault. I get it was post 9/11 and all but the stuff he went through was so over the top and exaggerated I don’t think it’s any crazier than Daffy Duck swallowing nitroglycerin like in “Show Biz Bugs” and telling the audience he could only do it once while implying he died and was going to hell. Also, I hear that scene with Patrick rubbing sunscreen on Sandy’s shoulders in “Procrastination” was cut for many years and brought back apparently.

The Show Biz Bugs thing is weird, because back in like 2010 when it aired at like 6AM it was uncut but when it aired later in the day it was censored. I know because when I woke up for school one day in highschool around 6:25 AM I saw the scene right before the next cartoon at 6:30, and then when I saw the encore airing at like 4 PM it wasn't there

In Canada, the scene is left intact on every airing of the episode, so Just One Bite without the gas scene is just weird to me.

This is probably why so many people thought there was a Squidward transformation in I Was a Teenage Gary because the transition is so off it feels like an attempt at editing.

I thought Shanghaied was banned for being partnered with Gary takes a Bath but hearing they thought the former was too scary is shocking, the perfume department always slayed me. Whilst I agree that subliminal girl probably would be kids' first jumpscare, the fact that "Don't drop them" wasn't allowed yet Fairly Oddparents got away with a reference to "The Aristocrats" joke blows my mind.

First, thank you for acknowledging that asexuality is part of the LGBT+ community! A lot of people tend to forget that and so the [annoying] debates about SpongeBob's sexuality present his two options as either being gay or being straight. Hillenburg's statement about SpongeBob being asexual is almost always ignored. (I know that this doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things but it would still be nice for one of the most popular characters in history to be asexual.) Second, although the NFL fumbled hard with the performance of "Sweet Victory," the NHL did play the clip before one of their games, although the characters' costume colors were tweaked to be green. Just thought this was a neat bit of trivia to share!

I agree with you, Lydia, on the questionable sensitivity from the UK Censor Classification team with some early Spongebob episodes. And I'm from the UK myself. Seriously, have they seen some example from the 17th century parody and satire comic strips in newpaper from libraries and museums, including independent ones from the UK. Plus, my university leature have talked to us, illustrators about some animation and artists who done some risqué, violence and adult oriented with slice of life contents in their work around the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s to me in the mid 2010s that give those early Spongebob epsoides run for their money. Also, I would be 100% support with the banner in them with reasonable explanation and age range labels only if the viewers wanted to look at them in his or her risk. Some early Spongebob episodes, I wasn't upset but curiosity when I saw a few of them in the 2000s when I was a young child in the UK.

Besides the fire, there's nothing connected to 9/11 in the just one bite deleted scene compared to the ones from movies. Monsters, Inc removed the restuarant explosion for a plasma containment force while Lilo and Stitch changed its third act including Stitch and Jumba deliberately destroying the house and hijacking a plane.

Do you know in the episode "dumped" there was a deleted scene that only aired a few times before being removed? It was the very last scene where at the end where Patrick yells "I thought we had something special!", right after that it pulls back to have Larry the snail meow at Patrick and he says "hi there buddy". The missing scene was implying that Larry would become Patricks new pet and stick around the series. This was removed later Larry would never been seen and Patrick never had a long lasting pet.

The first one - honestly I've heard this is true for EVERY studio and most of the people working on the movies/shows from Disney to Dreamworks to Nick and beyond have some kind of work like that of the characters. So much so, people who pitch shows are given the "there WILL be Rule 34 art of your characters, no matter their age, be prepared for that because it'll happen" and one even said "I just didn't expect it to be from the animators/character designers themselves."

Also, Stephen actually worked on Kamp Koral's idea creation / beginning development before his passing, so it seems to me that even though he originally was against a SB spin off, it appears that he changed his mind. It's amazing how much this show could get away with in the 2000s and even in the early 2010's. One Coarse Meal is one of the darkest episodes I can think of period because of the psychological torture. Are you Happy Now? is also quite upsetting. House Fancy is infamous for its toenail scene, Gary takes a Bath is also pretty dark, but it's not unheard of as the Looney Tunes have made similar jokes I'm pretty sure.

Oh yeah, Once Upon A Forest! I remember that movie! That was the first time l saw a dead character in a cartoon. Really prepared me well for the adult parts of Animals of Farthing Woods and Chronicles of Redwall. I'm still not fully over Lug-a-Lug the Ferryman's death. That was a particularly cruel one. I'm glad I only started reading the books as an adult. So much violence and death, it would have been quite the mixed bag for me as a child.

Great video. Although the 17:44 section felt like it was missing crucial details and painted a mostly negative view. You left out that Steven said in the interview that wasn’t against spin-offs, he just didn’t see them happening. And not to mention that he worked on both the the sponge on the run movie, and early on in camp coral before his passing. And according to staff he was well aware of the spin-offs being made. Also Paul Tibbitt hasn’t worked on the show since season 9 and left production on sponge on the run. Other staff members statements contradicts what Paul says in interviews

I remember that the first time I ever read anything remotely related to homosexuality was precisely a newspaper article talking about SpongeBob supposedly being gay back when the first movie was being released. I was very confused at first. And those crude storyboards weren't the only time there has been NSFW art of the series made by people who worked on it, as the developers of the PS1 game SuperSponge did just that shortly afterwards and the results are arguably even cruder. I wasn't aware the line "Oh my aching tentacles!" had been cut in the UK. I watched _SpongeBob_ practically every day for years and have seen all episodes (up to a point) multiple times over. That line ended the episode here for years undisturbed. Is that a more recent thing? Though "Shanghaied"/"Gary Takes A Bath" are the exceptions. I've only ever seen those aired once here in the UK in the same period. I can hardly describe how bizarre it was to see an episode in the older style that was, in all other respects, brand new to me, after so many years practically memorising everything else.

The NSFW book controversy is insane- it was a bunch of artists making a stupid collection of drawings for fun, sharing it with each other FOR FUN, and then when it leaked everyone got all up in arms about it being inappropriate The first page literally opens up with “this is full of inappropriate images” It IS very common in the animation industry to just fuck around with your characters- the Adventure Time creators had loads of drawings of the characters using actual swears, because it was fun to make.

The Biggest controversy here is that news channel thinking "SpongeBob Gone Pants" was clever enough to be a headline.

The hate for One Coarse Meal is lost on me for one reason. Plankton ONLY wants the Krabby Patty formula so he can take over the world, and his intentions are malicious. He did enslave the entirety of Bikini Bottom in the first movie, and his lyrics in the F.U.N. song prove he has a violent intent. And yes, in later seasons and the second movie he flip flops between being actually evil and reluctantly good, he was firmly a bad guy at the time of the episode. If anything, it's a GOOD episode for Plankton's character. It gave him a taste of his own medicine, and it showed how he didn't much like it. Rest assured, he'd pull the same "scare him to s*icide" on Krabs. And HOPEFULLY not a controversy, and I'm not going to dox the name of the restaurant, but I was at a coastal place last night and surprisingly, most of the mixed alcoholic cocktails were named after Spongebob or Spongebob ephemera. Even had one called a "Dirty Dan" and I thought that was a deep dive for a restaurant of that type. The weirdest thing was it wasn't even a gimmicky place.

I don't think its a "serves him right" thing. I think its just that the tone of the episode was kinda off. The constant harassment paired with Plankton's genuine fear, the suicide bit, and Krabs's ridicule is just a lot for a children's tv. And its the whole episode instead of one dark joke, so there's little reprieve.

@@bookworm4133 Plus, honestly, after Ink Lemonade, this episode feels a might tame. Krabs and Plankton hate each others' guts and there's plenty of reason for both of them to drive the other one to the point of despair. Ink Lemonade, on the other hand, Patrick and Spongebob (but mostly Patrick) basically spend the episode psychologically tormenting Squidward so they can sell his inky discharge. The difference is, those two are supposed to be Squidward's friends (or at least they think they are). He even has one gag where he shows Squidward a future where he's an old man still working at the job he hates instead of being the artist he wants to be. A move that's both despicable and freaking brilliant. Plus, it feeds into the problem with newer Spongebob episodes being just comic strip gag based instead of having a plot. I'm surprised I don't hear more about this episode.

Spongebob being gay?? Nnoo way that's so radical. But really spongebob represents children both boys and girls can relate to spongebobs innocence and childish nature being a young person growing in a world of adults but also accepting responsibilities like work which every adult does as well as driving which spongebob fails Also its a cartoon.

The episode I find the most disturbing was one where squidward brings a clarinet to work and asks for a locker. The locker turns into a massive hallway and the episode follows squidward chasing SpongeBob trying to retrieve his clarinet while in a trance.
